Maryland, Michigan and Northwestern Earn Field Hockey Awards

ROSEMONT, lll. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its Field Hockey Offensive, Defensive and Freshman of the Week Award winners for the week of Sept. 6-Sept. 8.

Offensive Player of the Week
Kate McLaughlin, Michigan
Gr. – F – Winnetka, Ill. – New Trier Township

  • McLaughlin led Big Ten players with a nine-point weekend (4 goals, assist) as No. 12 Michigan claimed a pair of victories on the East Coast
  • Recorded a hat trick (the second of her career) and place seven shots on goal Friday in a 5-2 win over Boston University, providing the game-tying and game-winning goals
  • Posted her team-best fifth goal of the season Sunday versus Providence
  • The two-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient receives her first Big Ten weekly award
  • Last Michigan Offensive Player of the Week: Lora Clarke (Oct. 17, 2022)

Defensive Player of the Week
Annabel Skubisz, Northwestern
Gr. – G – Houston, Texas – The Kinkaid School

  • Logged back-to-back shutouts against ranked opponents to help top-ranked Northwestern to a 2-0 record against ACC opponents at Lakeside Field
  • Made eight saves in the Wildcats’ 2-0 win over No. 5 Duke Friday in Evanston
  • Held 17th-ranked Boston College scoreless to lower her season goals-against average to 0.25 while improving her save percentage to .933 (14-for-15)
  • Captures the Big Ten Defensive award for the seventh time in her career
  • Last Northwestern Defensive Player of the Week: Annabel Skubisz (Oct. 30, 2023)

Freshman of the Week
Ella Gaitan, Maryland
Fr. – F – Belvidere, N.J. – Blair Academy

  • Notched her first collegiate goal—which turned out to be the game-winner—just 1:40 into the contest in Maryland’s 2-0 decision over 17th-ranked Boston College
  • Played 44 minutes against No. 5 Duke at the ACC/Big Ten Cup, launching a shot towards net
  • Has started all four games this season for the fourth-ranked Terrapins, standing third in total shots (7)
  • Collects her first Big Ten Freshman of the Week certificate
  • Last Maryland Big Ten Freshman Winner: Alyssa Klebasko (Oct. 23, 2023)
