Friday’s first semifinal features third-ranked Saint Joseph’s (19-3) versus top-ranked North Carolina (20-0) at 12 p.m. ET. ESPN+ will carry both games.Massachusetts and Northwestern will be meeting for the second time this season. The Wildcats defeated the Minutewomen, 6-1, on Sept. 1 in Evanston, Ill.Northwestern earned a trip to the NCAA semifinals with a 3-2 overtime win against eighth-ranked Virginia in a NCAA Second Round match Sunday at Lakeside Field. Lauren Wadas scored 2:20 into overtime, marking the second-straight year she has scored the game-winner in the regional final.Coach Tracey Fuchs’ squad is seeking its fourth-straight trip to the championship game, having previously winning a national title in 2021 in Ann Arbor.

Olivia Bent-Cole and Ilse Tromp had two goals each while Ashley Sessa had a five-point day (goal, three assists). The Wildcats placed 19 shots on goal and took 30 overall playing on their home field. Michigan fell to Virginia, 2-1, in the second game of the afternoon at Lakeside Field. Virginia opened a 2-0 lead before Michigan responded with a goal at 58:27 off the stick of Kate McLaughlin. The Wolverines (15-5) finished with an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners, missing on its last corner opportunity in the game's closing seconds. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Deep in the heart of ACC country, Maryland sustained a 1-0 loss to Duke Friday afternoon. It was the second meeting this year between the schools with the Blue Devils winning by an identical score at the ACC/Big Ten Cup in September. The defensive battle produced just six combined shots on goal as Duke scored the lone goal in the third period. Maryland (13-7) pulled its goalkeeper with under five minutes to go but couldn't find the back of the cage with the extra attacker.

Michigan earned an automatic berth while Northwestern and Maryland received at-large berths.Opening round matches of the NCAA Tournament begin Wednesday (Nov. 13) with First and Second Round games slated for Friday (Nov. 15) and Sunday (Nov. 17) respectively. All games will be streamed on ESPN+.Northwestern (19-1), which won the Big Ten regular season title, is the No. 2 overall seed and will host the winner of an opening round match between Miami (Ohio) and Vermont on Friday, at 1 p.m. ET. Northwestern is making its 20th NCAA Tournament appearance and hosting a regional at Lakeside Field for the third-straight year.Michigan (15-4), the Big Ten Tournament Champions, will travel to Evanston, Ill., and take on Virginia (13-4) on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET, marking the Wolverines’ 20th appearance in the NCAAs.Maryland (13-6) will meet Duke (12-6) for the second time this season on Friday at 1:30 p.m. ET in Chapel Hill, N.C. It marked the ninth Big Ten title in school history.The third-seeded Wolverines (15-4) receive the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which begins next week. The Big Ten will find out how many additional teams receive at-large berths when the tournament bracket is revealed tonight at 9 p.m. CT on the Selection Show, streaming on NCAA.com.Just two days ago, Michigan was four seconds away from being eliminated in the semifinals. Marcia Pankratz’s squad rallied from two goals down and netted a last-second shot to force overtime against fifth-ranked Maryland, then won a shootout to advance to today’s championship game. Michigan also went to overtime in a quarterfinals win over Indiana.Top-ranked Northwestern (19-1), which captured the Big Ten regular season championship, suffered its first loss of the season and its first setback against a Big Ten opponent in 21 matches dating to the 2022 Big Ten Tournament Final, also won by Michigan. Photo by Greg FiumeCOLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Championship Game for the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament is set following semifinal action Friday at the Lacrosse and Field Hockey Complex. Michigan and Northwestern advanced and will meet on Sunday at 11 a.m. to play for the tournament title and an NCAA automatic berth. Top-seed Northwestern downed No. 4 seed Rutgers, 2-0, in the first semifinal. NU (19-0) received a goal from Ashley Sessa just 56 seconds into the game, then added an empty netter on from Maddie Zimmer at the 58:59 mark. Rutgers (8-9) managed two shots on goal while Scarlet Knight goalkeeper Sophia Howard turned away fives shots. In the second semifinal, No. 3 seed Michigan overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat No. 2 seed Maryland, 4-3, in a shootout. Michigan won the shootout, two strokes to zero. The first half produced three goals. Maryland's Maci Bradford scored on a rebound 14 minutes in. Michigan's Pilar Oliveros tied the game with 2:40 left in the first half before the Terp's Ella Gaitan answered less than a minute later. Draft Field Hockey Tournament: Semifinals Recap

Photo by Art PittmanCOLLEGE PARK, Md. — The 2024 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament commenced Thursday on the University of Maryland campus with three quarterfinal matches. Rutgers, Maryland and Michigan advanced to the semifinals, which take place Friday. The opening game saw No. 4 seed Rutgers edge No. 5 seed Ohio State, 2-1, marking the second time this season the Scarlett Knights have defeated the Buckeyes. Kara Heck scored twice for Rutgers (8-8) while Makenna Webster netted her team-leading 16th goal for seventh-ranked Ohio State (14-5). A defensive battle ensued in the second game of the day, producing a scoreless tie at the end of regulation. No. 2 seed Maryland (13-5) advanced with a 1-0 shootout win over No. 7 seed Iowa (9-9), finishing with a 3-2 advantage in the shootout. Iowa goaltender Mia Magnotta made 17 saves, a total that matched the second-highest total in tournament history. In the nightcap, Esmee de Willigen's overtime goal on a deflection lifted No. 3 seed Michigan past No. 6 seed Indiana, 2-1. Michigan (13-5) received an early goal from Kate McLaughlin that held up until the fourth quarter. Indiana (9-9) pulled its goalkeeper with six minutes left and Sydney Keld capitalized with an extra-attacker goal with 1:14 left to force overtime.

<div class="sidearm-story-template-text"><aside class="sidearm-story-template-links"><h3 class="hide"></h3></aside>ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference released its individual award winners, All-Big Ten teams, All-Freshman Team and Sportsmanship Award recipients for field hockey Wednesday on the eve of the 2024 Big Ten Tournament.Northwestern collected four individual awards and led all schools with seven all-conference selections. This was also the first year an All-Freshman Team was chosen. Voting was conducted by conference head coaches.Maddie Zimmer of Northwestern was a unanimous selection as Player of the Year, Ashley Sessa of Northwestern was chosen Offensive Player of the Year and Josie Hollamon of Maryland tabbed Defensive Player of the Year. Northwestern’s Annabel Skubisz earned the Goalkeeper of the Year Award as a unanimous selection and Michigan State’s Carmen Pucheta received Freshman of the Year honors. Tracey Fuchs of Northwestern was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.Zimmer has not missed a beat since returning to the Wildcats after spending a year training with the U.S. National Team. The senior midfielder exceled at both ends of the field for a Northwestern squad that outscored opponents, 66-10, during the regular season. Averaging over a point per game (1.16), Zimmer is the first Wildcat to be named Player of the Year since 1994.Sessa is the overall leader in points (53) and a co-leader in goals (20) among her Big Ten peers — totals that rank first and second respectively in the NCAA. In Big Ten play, she produced a conference-best 10 goals and 24 points in eight games. The sophomore forward is in her first season at NU after transferring from North Carolina.A two-year starter, Hollamon has anchored a defense that hasn’t allowed more than two goals in a game this season. At the same time, the Terrapins rank fourth in NCAA goals-against (0.87), having registered six shutouts. Hollamon becomes the fourth Maryland player to win the Defensive Player of the Year award.Skubisz has produced an 18-0 record along with 11 shutouts for the No.1-ranked Wildcats. She leads the country in save percentage (.885) and ranks second in goals-against average (0.51). She has been named Goalkeeper of the Year in both years of the award’s existence.Pucheta earned starts in all 18 games, scoring the game-winning goal in Michigan State’s 2-1 overtime victory over 16th-ranked Iowa on Oct. 25. She is the first Spartan to capture the Freshman of the Year Award since 2007 and is the school’s fourth recipient overall.Fuchs receives her third Coach of the Year Award. Now in her 16th season at Northwestern, Fuchs led her team to the first undefeated regular season in program history and a No. 1 ranking in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll.
