Big Ten Announces Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Watch List

ROSEMONT, lll. – The Big Ten Conference announced its 2026 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Watch List on Thursday. Preseason honors were bestowed upon 17 student-athletes. Eight of whom earned First Team All-Americans from the 2025-26 Indoor season made the list.

The list is highlighted by two NCAA Champions. Oregon’s three-time NCAA champion, Peyton Bair. Bair won two heptathlon titles (2025, 2026) and one decathlon title (2025). His 2026 title broke Ashton Eaton’s record for most points recorded in the heptathlon with 6,503. USC’s Garrett Kaalund won the NCAA 200m title with a collegiate and American record of 19.95 seconds.

The 2026 Outdoor Track and Field season began March 6.

Big Ten Receives 2026 NCAA/MOAA Opportunities & Impact Award

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- The Big Ten Conference has been named the Division I winner of the 2026 NCAA/MOAA Opportunities and Impact Award, the NCAA and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association — an affiliate of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics — announced Thursday.

The award recognizes and celebrates the initiatives, programs and efforts of athletics departments and conference offices in Divisions I, II and III that embrace environments of belonging and well-being and elevate the student-athlete voice in intercollegiate athletics communities. NCAA and MOAA representatives will present the awards June 7-10 in Las Vegas during the MOAA Symposium.

"We're proud to accept this honor on behalf of our 18 schools, whose support makes these initiatives possible," Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti said.

Omar Brown, Big Ten senior vice president for community and impact, added, "This humbling recognition is a direct result of the leadership and alignment we have from Commissioner Petitti, throughout the conference office, and in collaboration with our campuses. Big Ten student-athletes always are aiming for excellence in competition, in the classroom and in their communities. We will continue to build on this foundation to create transformational opportunities for their development and deliver impact to the many locales we call home across the nation throughout the year."

The Big Ten Conference continues to engage, educate and empower its student-athletes, coaches, administrators and its broader community base with programs, initiatives and engagements that make a difference and encourage positive change. For four years, student-athletes from Big Ten schools have traveled to Alabama for an immersive journey that included learning about the Civil Rights Movement, visits to historic sites, community service projects and panel sessions with local leaders. The Big Ten has also added new elements to the transformative experience each year to deepen understanding and inspire civic responsibility.

Additionally, the conference creates leadership opportunities for its student-athletes. It partners with James Russell Lowell Elementary School in Indianapolis, connecting its 18 member schools with classrooms that include mentorship and encouragement via virtual meetings.

Another one of its many initiatives are structured conversations with administrators, coaches, athletes and employees to gather feedback and to inform future strategies. Examples include conducting student-athlete experience exit surveys and hosting standing committees, commissions and leadership councils to discuss progress, share feedback and assess strategic alignment. The conference also hosts numerous inclusive programs such as United as One, the B1G Fellows Program, the Student-Athlete Issues Commission, The Women's Volleyball Mentorship Program and the CBS Sports Ambassador Program & Sports Journalism Initiative. The conference also promotes several awards programs, which includes the Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award to recognize student-athletes who demonstrate leadership, service and volunteerism.

Along with the Big Ten, Saint Michael's College athletics department was recognized in Division II, and Occidental College's athletics department was the Division III honoree.

"This honor is an acknowledgment of NCAA member schools and conference offices that intentionally create spaces and opportunities for all student-athletes, coaches and administrators to feel seen, heard and valued," said Felicia Martin, NCAA senior vice president of inclusion, education and community engagement. "It is important to recognize these outstanding recipients who diligently embrace a commitment to positively impact their athletic communities and make a significant difference for all humanity."

Discover, Big Ten Present Custom Jackets To Jackie Robinson Award Honorees

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Presenting sponsor Discover will deliver custom letterwinner jackets to all 36 institutional winners of the 2025-26 Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award, the Big Ten announced Wednesday. Each university’s male and female honoree will receive a customized, one-of-one gift featuring unique school elements and visuals.

The first two custom jackets were presented in December at the Discover Big Ten Football Championship Game to 2025 national winners Dillon Fontus, from Maryland football, and Iowa wrestler Nanea Estrella.

Both of last year’s winners, and Sonya Pankey Robinson (Jackie Robinson’s granddaughter), attended the game as guests of Discover, seeing Indiana claim the title at Lucas Oil Stadium on their way to a perfect 16-0 campaign and CFP National Championship. The 2026 national winners will be announced later this spring from the cohort of 36 campus recipients.

In November, the Big Ten Conference announced the 36 student-athletes selected as institutional winners of the 2025-26 Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award presented by Discover. Now in its second year, the honor was created to recognize Big Ten student-athletes who strive to have a positive impact within their community in addition to excellence in competition.

Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Beyond his athletic prowess, he continues to be recognized and honored for his contributions off the field: integrating Major League Baseball and his lifelong commitment to social justice. He is the embodiment of the Big Ten's mission to develop strong student leaders, and this program honors his legacy and core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. As Jackie famously said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

“It is our privilege and great honor to bestow this award in Jackie’s name upon these deserving Big Ten student-athletes and to express our appreciation for the support of the Jackie Robinson Foundation,” said Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti.

Honorees were selected based on the following criteria:

Demonstrated Impact: Significant and tangible contributions to community projects or causes, including measurable outcomes or positive changes resulting from their involvement.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with others, including peers, organizations, and community members, to achieve common goals and enhance community impact.
Consistency and Commitment: Ongoing and consistent participation in community service activities over an extended period of time.
Visibility and Advocacy: Efforts to raise awareness and advocate for important groups or causes, leveraging their platform to promote positive change and engage others.

The Big Ten Conference’s commitment to athletics, academics and service goes back to the conference’s founding. Coupling the academic goals set forth by leaders of the charter members of the conference with their steadfast commitment to athletics, the conference instituted the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1915, the first award to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on intercollegiate athletics. It is awarded annually by each member institution to one male and one female student of the graduating class who has attained the greatest proficiency in scholarship and athletics.

New “We Are Here” spot highlights student success, economic impact

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Big Ten universities’ leading role in educating students and driving economic prosperity is featured the latest edition in the “We Are Here” series of :30 ads .

The new ad began airing during Big Ten basketball games and other winter sports in January. Students and alumni take center stage, sharing with viewers what their lives look like and what they have been able to accomplish thanks to their Big Ten university education. Seen on campuses and in communities nationwide, their experiences are living proof of the world-class educational opportunities they received, from learning alongside Nobel Prize–winning faculty to participating in internships and undergraduate research. The spot also highlights the universities’ broader impact through innovation, job creation and service.

Together, the 18 members of the Big Ten Conference are educating more than 810,000 students, preparing them for successful lives and careers. The Big Ten’s collective graduation rate is more than 20 points above the national average and the universities have more than 9.2 million living alumni.

The first ad in the “We Are Here” series began airing last fall and has generated more than 250 million impressions across Big Ten broadcasts to date, including during the College Football Playoff National Championship won by Indiana University. It focused on how Big Ten universities make America healthier, safer and more prosperous through everything from discovering new medical treatments to developing healthier foods to driving economic growth.

As with the first ad, the second spot was developed by a creative team made up of staff from Big Ten member universities under the auspices of the Big Ten Academic Alliance. It is the second in a planned series of three ads, which over the course of the series will feature footage from all 18 universities.

Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission Calls for Limitations or Ban of Individual Prop Betting on College Athletics

ROSEMONT, Ill. — [February, 10, 2026] — The Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission (SAIC) today sent a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker urging the NCAA to continue pushing for limitations or the outright elimination of proposition (“prop”) betting involving individual student-athletes competing in college athletics. The letter reinforces the Big Ten Conference’s unwavering commitment to protecting the well-being and safety of student-athletes across all 18 Big Ten campuses, and the integrity of intercollegiate athletics.

“The Big Ten Conference is proud to support our student-athletes in calling for the restriction or elimination of individual proposition wagers on college athletics,” said Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti. "The Big Ten Conference appreciates the NCAA’s effort to eliminate these wagers and will continue to assist student-athletes as they deal with the challenges that result from proposition bets in college sports.”

President Baker recently sent letters to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and to State Gambling Commissions calling for amended state laws and regulations to better-protect student-athletes.

The letter from the Big Ten Conference SAIC outlines the growing concerns around the rise of individual performance prop wagering in college sports, including:

Increased harassment student-athletes experience because of wagers on individual-performance proposition wagers
Negative impact individual-performance proposition betting has on student-athletes’ mental health
Accusations of impropriety, even when unfounded, damage the student-athlete experience
Potentially jeopardizing the integrity of athletic competition

“While we understand that sports betting is becoming increasingly more common across the country and allows for states to generate increased tax revenue, prop betting represents unique risks at the college level,” the Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission wrote. “We believe protecting student-athletes must be a priority. Limiting or eliminating prop betting on college athletics would be a meaningful step toward reducing harassment, protecting mental well-being, and preserving the integrity of college competition.”

The Big Ten Conference SAIC was founded in 1994. SAIC members take an active role in monthly meetings discussing the issues most important to Big Ten Conference student-athletes and highlighting ongoing initiatives on their respective campuses. SAIC executive leadership members also represent Big Ten student-athletes in front of the Conference’s Joint Group council and represent the Big Ten Conference on the NCAA’s Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where they review NCAA activities, proposed legislation and offer feedback on behalf of the Big Ten’s student-athletes. Student-athletes are nominated by their institution and appointed by the Conference’s Joint Group Executive Committee to serve on the commission for one academic year.

Dillan Fontus of Maryland Football and Nanea Estrella, a member of the Iowa Women's Wrestling team, were named the inaugural national winners last spring. Both will be hosted in Indianapolis next month and recognized on the field during the 2025 Discover Big Ten Football Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday, December 6 (8pm ET; FOX).

Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Beyond his athletic prowess, he continues to be recognized and honored for his contributions off the field: integrating Major League Baseball and his lifelong commitment to social justice. He is the embodiment of the Big Ten's mission to develop strong student leaders, and we honor his legacy and core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. As Jackie famously said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

Honorees were selected based on the following criteria:

Big Ten Well-Represented at World Athletics Championships Tokyo ‘25

ROSEMONT, ILL. - After a dominant 2024-25 track & field season that saw the Big Ten take home three NCAA Championships, the World Athletics Championships will be full of athletes with Big Ten ties.

In total, 46 athletes on the women’s side and 34 athletes on the men’s side affiliated with Big Ten universities qualified for the Championships. Team USA’s roster will include 19 current and former Big Ten athletes, and those not competing for Team USA span internationally, representing 27 additional countries from South Africa to Greece.

Of the qualifying athletes, 15 are set to compete in the Big Ten during the upcoming 2025-26 cross country/track & field season.

The Championships begin on Sept. 13 and will be available via streaming on NBC and Peacock. More than 2,000 athletes from 200 countries will travel to Tokyo, Japan to take part in one of the world’s biggest sporting events. ROSEMONT, Ill. – Nine Big Ten student-athletes were recently honored for their performance in the classroom, as College Sports Communicators announced its 2025 Academic All-America Men's Track & Field/Cross Country.

Oregon and Nebraska each had three All-Americans, while Michigan State, USC and Wisconsin had one. The list was highlighted by Nebraska's Micaylon Moore, the 2025 Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award recipient and Oregon's Matthew Erickson, the 2025 NCAA indoor 800m champion, who were both given first team honors.

Big Ten Conference Recognizes 111th Medal of Honor Class

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference is celebrating its 111th class of recipients who earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor from their respective institutions during the 2024-25 academic year. Established in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference’s most prestigious award. It was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics.

The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their collegiate career. This year’s class comprised student-athletes from 15 sports.

Big Ten schools currently feature more than 11,000 student-athletes, but only 36 earn the award on an annual basis. Since the Big Ten Medal of Honor was first presented more than a century ago, just over 1,680 student-athletes have earned this unique distinction. Those names are on permanent display at the Big Ten Office in Rosemont.

Big Ten Announces Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Postseason Honors

The Big Ten Conference announced the 2025 Big Ten Men’s Outdoor Track and Field postseason individual award recipients on Wednesday, as selected by the conference’s head coaches. The NCAA championship meet was held last weekend at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Washington’s Nathan Green won Men’s Track Athlete of the Year, while Minnesota’s Kostas Zaltos was tabbed as Field Athlete of the Year and Michigan’s Brendan Herger was selected as Freshman of the Year.

Green won the 1500 meters with a time of 3:47.26, marking the second time he won the event in his career. He last won in 2023, and this marks the fourth straight year a Washington runner has captured the 1500 meters title. Green trailed the final 100 meters but had a strong final kick to beat Wisconsin’s Adam Spencer on the final turn.

Graduate student Kostas Zaltos became the first NCAA Champion for Minnesota since 2018 after winning the hammer throw competition. He won with a lifetime best throw of 78.08m (256-2) and beat teammate Angelos Mantzouranis, who earned silver.

Another competitor in the 1500 meters, Herger finished with a time of 3:47.88, good for 9^th overall in a stacked field that included Green, Spencer and teammate Trent McFarland, who finished 11^th overall. The group had a close overall finish, and Herger only finished .62 seconds behind first place finisher Green, the first place finisher.

Earlier this month, the Big Ten announced the award recipients for Track Athlete of the Championships, Field Athlete of the Championships and Coach of the Year, as well as the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honorees.

EUGENE, Ore. — Southern California made the most of its second visit to Hayward Field in a month, earning a share of the team national championship as competition concluded Friday at the 103rd NCAA Men's Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. USC compiled 41 points to tie with Texas A&M, who was part of the last NCAA co-championship in 2013. Minnesota finished seventh with 25 points, Oregon placed 11th with 19 points and Wisconsin tied for 19th with 15 points.

USC secured its NCAA-leading 27th outdoor championship — 16 more than any other school and the first for the Men of Troy since 1976 — ending Florida's three-year reign. USC also captures the NCAA "Double" having won the NCAA Indoor Championship in March. USC becomes the first Big Ten school to win as a member of the conference since Minnesota in 1948.

USC scored in seven events and catapulted into the lead following the meet's penultimate event, collecting nine points in the 200m dash on the strength of a third-place finish from Garrett Kaalund (19.96) and a sixth-place showing from Max Thomas (20.23). Earlier in the day, the Trojan 4x100 relay team of Travis Williams, Thomas, Taylor Banks and Kaalund finished second with a time of 38.46. Thomas went on to collect eight points with a runner-up time of 10.10 in the 100m dash while teammate William Jones claimed second in the 400m (45.53). In the field events, USC's Racquil Broderick broke his school record in the discus (63.09m/207-0) to finish fourth.

“This team, these student-athletes, they just did a fantastic job staying focused and doing everything these last couple of days," said USC Director of Track and Field Quincy Watts. “They’re champions and I’m just so proud of everyone, the student-athletes, the staff, just everybody. Teamwork makes the dream work.”

The Big Ten also secured its third individual national championship of the meet when Washington's Nathan Green came from back of the field to win the 1,500m by 0.07 seconds. It marked the fourth-straight year the Huskies have won the event and was Green's second gold to go with his 2023 triumph. "I was coming around the bend as calm as I could and I just thought I am going to have to dive because they're coming and nobody wants it more than I do," Green told a national television audience.

Friday's action also produced a notable performance in the National Collegiate Wheelchair 100m, where Evan Correll of Illinois defended his title with a time of 14.46.

USC's crown gives the Big Ten Conference 14 national championships for 2024-25.

The Big Ten earned 79 All-America certificates at the NCAAs, which will be made official next week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

EUGENE, Ore. — A pair of Big Ten performers won individual national championships Wednesday as the 2025 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships opened at Hayward Field. The iconic venue is hosting the NCAAs for the 19th time overall and for the 10th occasion in the past 16 years.

The first medals of the championships were awarded in the hammer throw, where Minnesota picked up 18 points by way of a one-two finish by graduate student Kostas Zaltos (78.08m/256-2) and sophomore Angelos Mantzouranis (76.96m/252-6). A four-time Big Ten hammer champion, Zaltos became the first Big Ten thrower since 1933 to capture the NCAA hammer title while competing as a conference student-athlete. Mantzouranis added a silver medal to his 2025 resume, which includes the longest collegiate hammer throw recorded since 2002. Those performances, along with a fourth-place finish by sophomore Charles Godfred in the long jump, vaulted the Gophers atop the team leaderboard with 23 points.

Wisconsin senior Jason Swarens tossed 21.23m (69-8) on his final shot put attempt to claim a national title. The only man to eclipse 70 feet this year, Swarens becomes the first Badger male to win the event.

The lone event tomorrow for the men is completion of the decathlon as the Big Ten women take center stage on their first day of action.

New Era Begins As House Settlement Approved

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 6, 2025 – Today marks a historic milestone for college athletics in the United States. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has granted final approval to a settlement in the House v. NCAA (“House”) litigation. This landmark settlement – agreed to by plaintiffs representing nearly 400,000 current and former student-athletes and the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference (SEC) – will reshape the landscape of college sports, paving the way for a model that prioritizes fairness, stability, integrity and opportunity for student-athletes and institutions.

Overseeing this model will be the newly established College Sports Commission – an independent body that will be responsible for implementing the settlement terms governing revenue sharing, student-athlete Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals and roster limits. The Commission will investigate any potential violations of these rules, make determinations regarding potential rules violations and penalties, provide notice and opportunity to be heard, participate in the arbitration process and ultimately administer penalties for violations of these rules. The Commission’s leadership team will be announced in the near future.

Under the new system, student-athletes will have more opportunities to financially benefit during their participation in intercollegiate athletics than ever before. Institutions are now able to share revenue directly with student-athletes, in addition to providing existing benefits such as athletic scholarships, access to world-class training facilities, academic counseling, medical care, post-eligibility medical coverage, mental health resources, nutritional guidance and life skills development.

Beginning July 1, 2025, each year, participating schools can distribute up to 22% of the average revenue among schools in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC from media rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships – known as the revenue sharing cap. The cap is estimated at $20.5 million per school for the 2025-26 academic year, pending final confirmation. To ensure revenue sharing with student-athletes is appropriately managed and reported to the Court for compliance, athletics departments will use the new College Athlete Payment System (CAPS) platform developed by LBi Software.

Student-athletes will also be able to continue receiving compensation from third-parties other than their institutions for the use of their NIL, so long as their NIL deals are made with the purpose of using their NIL for a valid business purpose and do not exceed a reasonable range of compensation. On behalf of the College Sports Commission, Deloitte* has built and will maintain a new technology platform called NIL Go in which student-athletes will be required to report their NIL deals to confirm they are in compliance with the rules. Deals will be evaluated based on:

Payor association – The relationship between the payor and the student-athlete’s school.
Valid business purpose – Whether the payor is seeking the use of the student-athlete’s NIL for a valid business purpose, meaning to sell a good or service to the public for profit.
Range of compensation – Whether the compensation paid to the student-athlete is commensurate with compensation paid to similarly situated individuals.

Finally, for participating schools, NCAA scholarship limits have been removed and roster limits have been established for each sport, allowing for a significant increase in scholarship opportunities for student-athletes. Under this new model, schools will have the option to offer partial or full scholarships to every student-athlete on a team’s roster, as long as the total number of student-athletes stays within the sport’s specific roster limit. Efforts have also been made to ensure current and immediately incoming student-athletes are not adversely impacted by the establishing of roster limits. Removing scholarship limits allows schools to better support their student-athletes through new scholarships, particularly in non-revenue-generating sports.

“We look forward to implementing this historic settlement designed to bring stability, integrity and competitive balance to college athletics while increasing both scholarship and revenue opportunities for student-athletes in all sports,” said Tony Petitti, Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference.

“This is a significant moment for college athletics that will provide unparalleled opportunities for student-athletes. We look forward to implementing this new system which offers much-needed transparency and structure to create a more sustainable model for the long-term future of college athletics,” said Jim Phillips, Ph.D., Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Following are significant dates related to the implementation of the settlement:

June 6, 2025: Settlement approved; settlement-related NCAA rules are effective, as adopted by the NCAA Division 1 Board on April 21, 2025.
June 11 2025: NIL Go portal launches.
June 15, 2025: Opt-in deadline for non-defendant schools to fully commit to revenue sharing.
July 6, 2025: Opt-in schools must “designate” student-athletes permitted by the settlement to remain above roster limits.
July 1, 2025: First date for direct institutional revenue sharing payments to student-athletes.
Start of 2025-26 academic year: With the exception of the “designated” student-athletes, Fall sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition.
December 1, 2025: With the exception of “designated” student-athletes, Winter and Spring sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition or Dec. 1, whichever is earlier.

169 Individuals from Big Ten Qualify for NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Rosemont, ILL. – After the conclusion of the East and West Regionals, the Big Ten will be well-represented at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon at Hayward Field. 169 total student-athletes from Big Ten institutions will be competing from June 11-14.

On the men’s side, 84 total Big Ten student athletes will be competing. Minnesota, Ohio State and USC lead the Big Ten with 10 individuals traveling to Hayward. USC also has multiple qualifiers competing in different events. Trojans’ Max Thomas dominated in the West Regionals and will have a chance at four event titles in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay.

On the women’s side, 85 individuals will be competing with Oregon with 12 student athletes competing. UCLA also had 11 qualifiers, and Iowa was third best with 10. USC’s Jassani Carter will also have a chance at four individual titles, as she is set to compete in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay.

Many events will also be Big Ten dominated. In the women’s pole vault, seven from the Big Ten will vie for the title, including NCAA all-time No. 1 and No. 7 marks Amanda and Hana Moll from Washington. 2024 NCAA Outdoor Champion and all-time No. 5 Chloe Timberg from Rutgers will look to defend her title as well.

In the men’s 100m, six qualified from the Big Ten, including five from USC alone. The other competitor, Iowa’s Kalen Walker, won the Big Ten Outdoor title in May. On the women’s side, six from the Big Ten will also be competing in the 100m, including four from USC and two from Ohio State.

USC and Oregon will each look to complete the season sweep after winning the 2025 Men's and Women's NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, respectively. The first event kicks off at 12:00 pm PT with the Men’s Decathlon 100m on Wednesday, June 11 and will conclude with the Women’s 4x400m relay at 8:21 pm PT on Saturday, June 14.

Big Ten Reveals Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship Awards

Rosemont, ILL. – The Big Ten Conference announced the 2025 Big Ten Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship award winners on Wednesday, as selected by the conference’s head coaches. The championship meet was held last weekend at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Oregon's Simeon Birnbaum earned Men’s Track Athlete of the Championships accolades, while Minnesota's Kostas Zaltos was selected as Field Athlete of the Championships and Ducks’ head coach Jerry Schumacher was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Birnbaum became the first Oregon men’s athlete to earn the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championships in program history by setting a new meet record in the 5,000m by almost 10 seconds. His time of 13:31.87 takes place of the record set by Wisconsin’s Mohammed Ahmed which stood for almost 12 years.

To win Field Athlete of the Championships, Zaltos surpassed the previous meet record in hammer throw. His mark of 77.67m (254-10) beat teammate Angelos Mantzouranis’ 2024 record by over two meters.

Schumacher claimed the Big Ten Outdoor Coach of the Year award after leading the Oregon men to a Big Ten outdoor title in the program’s first year in the conference. The Ducks’ men completed the season sweep, also winning the Big Ten indoor title, where Schumacher was named Big Ten Indoor Coach of the Year.

The Big Ten Conference office recognizes one student-athlete from each team as Sportsmanship Award Honorees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Honorees are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the academic year.

The Big Ten will announce Track Athlete of the Year, Field Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships, which are scheduled for June 11-14 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Oregon Claims Big Ten Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship

EUGENE, Ore. – In front of a home crowd, Oregon won the Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday. This is head coach Jerry Schumacher’s first men’s outdoor championship with the Ducks.

Minnesota and Wisconsin finished tied for second each scoring 81 points, while USC finished fourth with 78 points. Nebraska(76 points) rounded out the top five.

Oregon took home two individual Big Ten Outdoor titles, as Benjamin Balazs ran an 8:40.93 to win the 3,000m steeplechase and Simeon Birnbaum set a meet record of 13:31.87 to win the 5,000m.

Minnesota’s 4x100m relay team of Zion Campbell, Kion Benjamin, Aaron Charles, and Devin Augustine also set the meet record with a time of 38.54. The previous record of 38.87 was set by Minnesota in 2023, which Devin Augustine was also a member of.

The Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championships, Field Athlete of the Championships, Coach of the Year and Sportsmanship Award honorees will be announced on Wednesday (May 21). The Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year, Field Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year will be announced following the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

EUGENE, Ore. – After a strong second day from the Oregon men, the Ducks currently sit in first place with 65 points, followed closely by Nebraska (38 points) and Minnesota (39 points). The Illinois women claimed a second day lead with 41 points, with Minnesota (38 points) in second and Nebraska (28 points) in third.

Five individual champions were crowned on the men’s side in the long jump, decathlon, high jump, shot put and the 3,000m steeplechase-- while four individual champions were crowned on the women’s side in heptathlon, discus throw, long jump and the 3,000m steeplechase.

Minnesota’s Charles Godfred claimed the men’s long jump title after he beat Ohio State’s DJ Fillmore and Nebraska's Kavian Kerr, who finished second and third respectively. Godfred finished with a mark of 8.05m (26-5) to add 10 points to the Golden Gophers’ team tally.

In the men’s high jump, Nebraska’s Tyus Wilson built off his indoor success and recorded a mark of 2.21m (7-3) to win the event. Illinois’ Kamyren Garrett and USC’s Elias Gerald tied for second, each securing a mark of 2.14m (7-0 ¼).

To win the men’s shot put, Wisconsin’s Jason Swarens tossed for 20.53m (67-4 ¼), which beat out Nebraska’s Cade Moran and Oregon’s Kobe Lawrence. Swarens was the only athlete who finished above 20 meters in the event.

Tacoria Humphrey claimed the new meet record in women’s long jump after jumping 6.59m (21-7 ½). The previous record of 6.55m (21-6) was by Iowa’s Jahisha Thomas.

Both the decathlon and heptathlon finished after multiple events on Friday and Saturday. Illinois’ Rafael Raap won the decathlon with 7,572 points. Rapp won the discus throw, pole vault and javelin throw to boost his score. Oregon’s Annika Williams earned a person best 5,914 points to win the heptathlon. She secured second in the high jump and shot put to round out her score.

Nebraska’s Kalynn Meyer claimed the Big Ten title in women’s discus with a mark of 58.29m (191-3). She beat out Minnesota’s Anthonett Nabwe, who already won the hammer throw on Friday.

To conclude the evening, Michigan State’s Katelyn Stewart-Barnett won the 3,000m steeplechase for the women and Oregon’s Benjamin Balazs won for the men. Stewart-Barnett won with a time of 9:42:78, which was almost six seconds better than the second-best time.

With all qualifying events concluded, 27 finals will take place on Sunday starting at 10:00 a.m. PT with women’s javelin and concluding at 3:38 p.m. PT with the women’s 4x400m relay. All track events will be broadcast on Big Ten Network and field events will be available on B1G+/RunnerSpace.

EUGENE, Ore. – The 2025 Big Ten Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon, began Friday at the iconic Hayward Field, marking the first time a West Coast institution is hosting a Big Ten Championship.

At the end of day one, Minnesota leads both the men’s (28 points) and women’s (20 points) overall team standings. In the men’s competitions, Oregon sits in second place with 27 points, followed by Washington with 25 points. On the women’s side, Penn State is in second with 14 points, and Illinois is third with 10 points.

Four individual champions were crowned on the men’s side in the hammer throw, pole vault, javelin, and the 10,000m— while two individual champions were determined on the women’s side in hammer throw and 10,000m.

Kostas Zaltos of Minnesota broke the previous meet record for men’s hammer throw with a mark of 77.67m (254-10). The previous record of 75.15m (246-6) was set last year in Ann Arbor by current teammate Angelos Mantzouranis. Mantzouranis placed second this year with a mark of 75.11m (246-5).

On the women’s side, Minnesota’s Anthonett Nabwe took home the hammer throw title, beating the field by over a meter with a mark of 69.85m (229-2) on her third attempt. Illinois’ Phethisang Makhethe earned second with a mark of 68.66m (225-3) and Chloe Lindman captured third with a mark 67.89m (222-9).

With the highest clearance on the day, Illinois’ Cody Johnston secured the Big Ten title in men’s pole vault. Minnesota’s Jak Urlacher and Rutgers’ Brian O’Sullivan placed second and third, respectively.

Nebraska’s Arthur Petersen captured the men’s javelin title after throwing 78.91m (258-10) on his third attempt. Iowa’s Mike Stein, who finished second, secured his best mark of 77.41m (253-11) on his first throw but was unable to improve and hold onto the lead.

In the men’s 10,000m Washington’s Evan Jenkins edged out Oregon’s Aiden Smith in a neck-and-neck finish to win the individual title with a time of 29:24.48.
Oregon’s Diana Cherotich shattered the Big Ten Championship meet record for the women’s 10,000m by over 40 seconds. She finished with a time of 32:00.48. Penn State’s Florence Caron finished second with a time of 32.32.55 which also would have been a Big Ten Championships meet record prior to this year.

The Big Ten Conference Announces Inaugural “Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award” for Student-Athletes

ROSEMONT, Ill – In honor of Jackie Robinson’s core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence, the Big Ten Conference today announced the inaugural Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award to recognize the conference’s student-athletes who have made an exceptional impact in their local community. Before breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier, Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball.

Student-athletes will be nominated based on the following criteria:

Demonstrated Impact: Significant and tangible contributions to community projects or causes, including measurable outcomes or positive changes resulting from their involvement.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with others, including peers, organizations, and community members, to achieve common goals and enhance community impact.
Consistency and Commitment: Ongoing and consistent participation in community service activities over an extended period of time.
Visibility and Advocacy: Efforts to raise awareness and advocate for important groups or causes, leveraging their platform to promote positive change and engage others.

"The Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award celebrates Jackie’s legacy of excellence in community service,” said Sonya Pankey Robinson, Jackie’s first grandchild, Director and board member of the Jackie Robinson Foundation. "We are proud to recognize 36 outstanding men and women for the incredible impact they make in their community."

“It is our privilege and great honor to bestow this award in Jackie’s name upon these deserving Big Ten student-athletes and to express our appreciation for the continuing support of the Jackie Robinson Foundation,” said Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti.

"Our student-athletes make significant contributions through competition, academics, and community impact,” said Big Ten Senior Vice President, Community & Impact, Omar Brown. “This award allows the Big Ten to recognize these efforts in improving communities, just as we do with their other achievements. Jackie Robinson embodies this award and our goal to honor student-athletes who positively impact others."

Each Big Ten member-institution can nominate two student-athletes, one male and one female, from their respective schools. The Big Ten Conference will select two Jackie Robinson Community & Impact award winners, from the 36 nominations, who will be announced by the Big Ten Conference this spring. All remaining nominees will be recognized with individual awards for their contributions to their local communities.

In June of 2020 the conference launched the Big Ten Equality Coalition. This group, which features student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, chancellors, presidents and other members, has a stated goal of seeking tangible ways to actively and constructively combat racism and hate around the world, while also empowering student-athletes to express their rights to free speech and peaceful protest. An important initiative resulting from conversations initiated by the coalition was the Big Ten Voter Registration Initiative.

In recent years, several delegations of conference student-athletes and administrators have traveled to Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, for an immersive civil rights educational experience entitled: “Big Life Series: Selma to Montgomery.” The visit to one of the key centers of the civil rights movement was highlighted by marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to learn more about the profound impact that young people had on the civil rights movement.

Additionally, the Big Ten Conference is dedicated to making a lasting impact on the communities where its major events are held hosting sports clinics, renovating recreation centers, and giving elementary-aged children a behind-the-scenes experience with major Big Ten events. In all cases the conference focuses on creating meaningful improvements aimed at leaving each location better than it was found. Most recently, the Big Ten collaborated with the College Football Playoff Foundation, local sports organizations and local school districts to enhance spaces for teachers and children while providing additional educational and athletic opportunities for children.

University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and University of Washington Officially Join Big Ten Conference

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference today officially admitted the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington, bringing the total number of member institutions to 18. Competition will begin this season for all conference sports.

“We are excited today to officially welcome the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington to the Big Ten Conference,” said Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. “All four institutions feature a combination of world class academics and athletics that are a great fit for our conference, and we look forward to building long-lasting relationships with the administrators, coaches, student-athletes, alumni and fans.”

On June 30, 2022, the Big Ten’s Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) voted unanimously to admit the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC). A little more than a year later, on August 4, 2023, the COP/C voted unanimously once more to admit the University of Oregon and the University of Washington, with all four schools joining the Conference on August 2, 2024.

Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are all members of the Association of American Universities, an organization of American research institutions devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. Today, they also become members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, where Big Ten institutions lead the nation with more than 75,000 instructional staff, 810,000 students, $17.4 billion in annual research expenditures, and 145 million library volumes, representing 25 percent of all print titles in North America. Collaboration through the Big Ten Academic Alliance allows the universities to work more effectively and efficiently by, among other things, sharing a high-speed fiber optic network, offering an array of leadership development programs, building shared infrastructure, and seamlessly sharing library resources.

Athletically, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington have won a combined 302 NCAA team championships and have 49 Olympians on Team USA at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. On the football field, they’ve combined for 10 Heisman Trophies, 73 College Football Hall of Famers, 41 Rose Bowl championships and 173 First Round NFL draft picks, including six this year.

The University of Oregon is a Carnegie R1 research university and a member of the Association of American Universities. University of Southern California (USC) is a prestigious private research university offering more than 350-degree programs excelling in education, the arts, business, engineering and sciences, as well as in research innovation and healthcare. Sponsoring 23 sports, USC has a long tradition of successful Olympic athletes, boasting more Olympians, medalists and gold medalists than any school in the country. Entering 2024-25, the Trojan teams have won 113 national championships.

The University of Washington has been recognized as the No. 1 most innovative public university in the world and recently tied for seventh on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities rankings and second among U.S. public institutions. Washington receives more federal research dollars than any other U.S. public university and has been home to seven Nobel Prize winners. In athletics, the Huskies 650 student-athletes compete in 22 sports and have won national championships in football, women’s cross country, men’s rowing, women’s rowing, softball, women’s volleyball and women’s golf. Big Ten Conference Announces 2024 Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients on Wednesday, recognizing two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten member institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program. These honorees will be awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements.

This year’s recipients, who represent 15 different sports, will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines. Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarships. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average (GPA), demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.

The Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student’s postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. To retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.

Big Ten Recognizes 110th Medal of Honor Class

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference is celebrating its 110th class of recipients who earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor from their respective institutions during the 2023-24 academic year. Established in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference’s most prestigious award. It was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics.

The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their collegiate career. This year’s class comprised student-athletes from 17 sports.

Big Ten schools currently feature more than 9,800 student-athletes, but only 28 earn the award on an annual basis. Since the Big Ten Medal of Honor was first presented more than a century ago, just over 1,650 student-athletes have earned this unique distinction. Those names are on display at the Big Ten Office in Rosemont.

2023-24 SPORTSMANSHIP HONOREES

ROSEMONT, Ill. – On Tuesday, the Big Ten Conference announced the 28 honorees named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2023-24 academic year. These standouts were chosen from a group of 350 students honored throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

USTFCCCA Recognizes 14 Big Ten Individuals with Regional Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its regional athletes and coaches of the year for the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field season, which featured 14 individuals from the Big Ten Conference.

Members coaches voted on the honors after the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships and considered performances from throughout the season.

Big Ten Announces Outdoor Track and Field Postseason Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference announced Thursday the 2024 Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field postseason award recipients, as selected by the conference’s head coaches following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships.

Penn State graduate student Cheickna Traore was named Men’s Track Athlete of the Year, while Nebraska junior Tyus Wilson was selected as the Field Athlete of the Year and Minnesota’s Angelos Mantzouranis was named Freshman of the Year.

Michigan junior Savannah Sutherland was selected as the Women’s Track Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season, while Illinois junior Rose Yeboah claimed Field Athlete of the Year honors and Minnesota’s Zoie Dundon was named Freshman of the Year.

Traore capped off one of the greatest sprint seasons in Penn State history by winning the 200-meter NCAA title with a time of 19.95, the Nittany Lions' first NCAA outdoor champion in a sprint event since 1941. Wilson followed a Big Ten high jump championship with a runner-up result at Hayward Stadium, clearing 2.23m. After winning the conference title in the hammer throw, Mantzouranis finished third at the with a 75.50m toss in his NCAA Championships debut.

Sutherland, the Big Ten champion in the 400m hurdles, finished second in Oregon with a personal best time of 53.26, improving upon her record-setting performance in the semifinals (54.04) to set the Canadian and U-M standards for the second time in three days. Yeboah became the first Illinois women's high jump national champion with an NCAA Outdoor Championships meet- and school-record leap of 1.97m, a mark that automatically qualified her to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Highlighting a sterling rookie campaign, Dundon dominated the field to win the Big Ten 3000m Steeplechase title by more than 12 seconds.

ROSEMONT, Ill. [June 12, 2024] — The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 2,271 students competing in spring sports who have been named to the Academic All-Big Ten team Wednesday.

The list of honorees includes 174 baseball students, 80 men’s golf students, 72 women’s golf students, 181 men’s lacrosse students, 183 women’s lacrosse students, 310 women’s rowing students, 189 softball students, 56 men’s tennis students, 76 women’s tennis students, 291 men’s track and field students, 382 women’s track and field students, five bowling students, 74 fencing students, four pistol students, 17 rifle students, 18 women’s lightweight rowing students, 27 men’s rowing students, eight women’s synchronized swimming students, 18 men’s volleyball students, 57 women’s hockey students, 11 sand volleyball students, 31 women’s water polo students and seven women’s wrestling students.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team (as verified by being on the official squad list as of May 1 for spring sports), have been enrolled full time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

NCAA Men's Outdoor Track & Field: June 7

RESULTS

EUGENE, Ore. — A day after the Big Ten women won two national championships in field events, the Big Ten men were not to be outdone, securing two NCAA titles on the track as the men's competition concluded Friday at the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Senior Cheickna Traore clocked 19.95 in the 200 to become Penn State's first national champion since 2018. It was also the Nittany Lions' first national sprint title since 1941. Traore, who started his collegiate career in NCAA Division III, is expected to compete for the Ivory Coast at the Paris Olympics.

Nebraska senior Darius Luff, a Lincoln native, captured the 110 Hurdles national title with a PR of 13.19, becoming the first Cornhusker to ever win that event. He also earned a bid to the U.S. Olympic Trials later this month at Hayward Field.

Teammate Tyus Wilson earned silver in the high jump, clearing 2.23 meters (7-3.75). His performance helped Nebraska finish in a 13th-place tie in the team standings, the highest Big Ten finish at this year's meet.

Florida won its third-straight team title by a point over Auburn with USC placing the third. The Trojans join the Big Ten this summer.

Other podium finishes were turned in by Wisconsin junior Adam Spencer, who took third in the 1,500 (3:39.80). Big Ten champion Praise Aniamaka of Purdue claimed sixth place in the triple jump, covering 16.30 meters (53-5.34).

The Big Ten had 55 athletes compete at the NCAAs with 53 earning All-America honors, which will be made official in the coming weeks by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

RESULTS

EUGENE, Ore. — The lone men's event at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday produced a pair of Second Team All-Americans for the Big Ten Conference.

Graduate student Ryan Talbot of Michigan State placed ninth in the decathlon with a season-best 7,759 points while senior Aiden Ouimet of Illinois finished 11th with 7,673 points.

Talbot jumped 10 spots in the decathlon standings on Thursday, highlighted by a personal-best throw of 50.90 meters (167-0) in the discus that was second-best in the event. Ouimet moved up two places sparked by a career-best showing in the discus as well.

Leo Neugebauer of Texas recorded the sixth-best performance in world history with a collegiate-record 8,961 points to capture the decathlon.

EUGENE, Ore. — The 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships began Wednesday at iconic Hayward Field, which is hosting the event for the 15th time.

The Big Ten produced seven First Team All-Americans (detailed below) and saw three freshmen make podium finishes.

Wisconsin junior Jason Swarens recorded the highest finish of the day for the conference with a runner-up showing in the shot put. Swarens registered a season-high mark of 20.38 meters (66-10.5) as three Big Ten throwers placed among the top eight spots. Illinois senior Tyler Sudduth took seventh, becoming the first Illini All-American in the event this century, and Nebraska senior Kevin Shubert placed eighth.

Freshman Angelos Mantzouranis, earned six points for Minnesota with a third-place finish in the hammer throw, recording a distance of 75.50 meters (247-8). Freshman teammate Charles Godfred finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 7.90 meters (25-11). Godfred will compete in the Nigerian National Championships later this month. Minnesota is alone in eighth place in the team standings with nine points.

Freshman Cody Johnston of Illinois placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing 5.52 meters (18-1.25). In the process, he became the first freshman in school history to earn All-America honors and score at the national meet.

Iowa sophomore Mike Stein finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 72.81 meters (238-10). Fellow Hawkeye Austin West stands third in the decathlon after four disciplines completed with 4,272 points.

Big Ten runners also qualified for the finals of the 200, 1,500 and the 110 Hurdles. Cheickna Traore of Penn State clocked the fastest time in the 200 prelims (20.02) while Wisconsin's Adam Spencer (3:37.32—1,500) and Nebraska's Darius Luff (13.31—110 hurdles) registered the second-fastest heat time in their respective events.

Big Ten Athletes Prepare for 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

EUGENE, Ore. — The Big Ten Conference is sending over 100 student-athletes to the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Championships run June 5-8 at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. ESPN networks will broadcast the event.
