The start of conference play brought madness in men’s soccer! Upsets, a top-10 battle, and a few backflips .

‘Cats stun No. 2 Terps

Behind goals from four different players, Northwestern knocked off No. 2 Maryland 4-0 to earn the highest-ranked win of head coach Russell Payne’s tenure and the program’s first top-five victory in nearly 10 years.

"That’s one of the best teams in the country we just beat, and we showed ourselves that when we play to our standards, we’re capable of anything,” said Payne after the game.

Peter Riesz opened the scoring in the 14th minute for Northwestern and Italo Addimandi tacked on another before halftime, while the Wildcat defense held the Terrapins without a shot in the first half. That changed in the second half with Maryland firing 13 shots, but it was the ‘Cats’ night. Andrew Millar and Ethan Nakolo added two more tallies to put the match out of reach. More from Evanston .

Scarlet Knights take down No. 11 Bruins

On Friday night, Rutgers notched its first ranked win since 2024 with a 3-1 defeat of No. 11 UCLA. The Bruins appeared to take control early when Zachary Neuls scored in the fourth minute, but the Scarlet Knights answered back 10 minutes later with Nick Collins’ equalizer. The 1-1 score lasted into the second half until Erick Ruiz buried the game-winner for Rutgers . UCLA pressed for the equalizer late, but William Pierce scored his first goal as a Scarlet Knight in the 88^th minute to seal the upset win in Piscataway. Read Rutgers’ recap .

Top-10 matchup ends in a dramatic stalemate

The much-anticipated tilt between No. 3 Ohio State and No. 8 Wisconsin lived up to the hype on Friday. The intense battle between the undefeated Buckeyes and Badgers was knotted at 0-0 until Aaron Hurge put Ohio State ahead with what seemed like the winning goal with just over four minutes to play. But Wisconsin had other plans. With eight seconds left to play, Matthew Zachemski (also number eight) lofted a shot off the crossbar and into the net to earn the Badgers the draw — the second-straight buzzer beater for Wisconsin ( see the last one ).

Northwestern and Rutgers look to build momentum

For both Northwestern and Rutgers, there is further opportunity to cement themselves as national contenders.

The Wildcats are right back to it on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. ET matchup on Big Ten Network against No. 10 Michigan State in East Lansing. The Spartans are looking to bounce back from a loss for the first time this year, after falling 3-1 to Kansas City on Friday.

Meanwhile, Rutgers will host No. 16 Princeton on Tuesday evening (7 p.m. ET on B1G+). The Tigers are off to a hot start — they’re unbeaten and winners of four straight including a 2-0 win against No. 3 Portland last month.

Unbeaten Squads, Trophy Defenses, and National Contenders

Big Ten action is officially here, with six matches on Friday kicking off an opening weekend that marks the first step in the Big Ten title race. From the battles of the undefeated to the defending NCAA champions bouncing back, there is plenty to watch with conference play rolling in. Here are Andrew McDevitt’s top storylines.

1. Which Teams Will Stay Undefeated?

Six programs enter conference play without a loss, all ranked in the upper half of the top 25: No. 2 Maryland, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 5 Indiana, No. 8 Wisconsin, No. 10 Michigan State, and No. 11 UCLA. Now, come conference play, which teams will keep rolling?

The No. 8 Badgers face immediate tests with four consecutive matches against top-10 opponents, beginning with hosting No. 3 Ohio State in Madison on Friday. Also on September 11, No. 11 UCLA faces Rutgers in Piscataway, while both No. 2 Maryland and No. 5 Indiana go on the road for matchups against Northwestern and Michigan, respectively.

With every point crucial in securing a Big Ten Tournament bid, we’ll see which rosters keep rolling through the first conference weekend.

2. Washington’s Title Defense

Reigning national champion Washington holds a 3-2-1 mark entering conference play, but the Huskies are no strangers to early-season resets; in 2025, Washington started 2-2-2 before finishing the season at 16-6-2.

The preseason No. 1 team enters Big Ten play on Friday night in Seattle against Penn State. Junior midfielder Zach Ramsey leads the nation with nine goals (and he's only played five of the team’s six matches!), giving head coach Jamie Clark the offensive engine needed to guide Washington into national championship contention.

3. MAC Hermann Trophy Contenders

Two years after Ohio State’s Michael Adedokun captured the MAC Hermann Trophy, the Big Ten once again boasts top individual talent. Standouts on the national radar include Maryland goalkeeper Laurin Mack — who leads the conference with 18 saves — Indiana forward Collins Oduro, UCLA midfielder Jaime Amaro, and Michigan defender Matthew Fisher.

Along with those faces, there are names who have broken onto the scene already, like Washington’s Ramsey or Ohio State forward Isaiah Chisolm, who has seven goals in his first year in Columbus (second nationally). With so much individual talent, the MAC Hermann Trophy could end up in Big Ten country once again.

4. UCLA Defends Conference Tournament Crown

After claiming the Big Ten Tournament title as a No. 4 seed last season, No. 11 UCLA enters conference play at 3-0-2. Led by junior defender Shakir Nixon’s team-high three goals, the Bruins face Rutgers and Michigan to open conference play before a pivotal clash with Maryland in College Park.

The UCLA offense will look to keep clicking after scoring 10 goals in five matches and 2+ in three straight games. With momentum building on both ends of the pitch, the Bruins look well-positioned to defend their tournament championship.

5. Pursuit of Back-to-Back National Titles

With so many national contenders, will the NCAA Champion be from the Big Ten once again?

The conference hasn't crowned back-to-back national champions since Indiana in 2003–04, but it has the firepower in 2026 to change that. The Terps, Buckeyes, Hoosiers, Badgers, Spartans and Bruins lead a stacked conference with a grueling slate that will forge whichever champion emerges into a battle-tested favorite for the College Cup.

Terps Claim East Coast Rivalry Clash, Conference Play Next

In front of Ludwig Field’s largest crowd since 2017, No. 2 Maryland claimed its highest-ranked win in eight years, defeating No. 5 Georgetown 3-2. The Hoyas struck first in the 16^th minute of the DMV rivalry clash, but Albi Ndrenika curled in a nasty shot from beyond the 18 just three minutes later to knot it at one. The Terps’ top goal scorers took over from there, with freshman Rodrigo Neri netting the go-ahead goal (27’) before Said El Eyssami buried the dagger (81’). Read Maryland’s story .

The Terps now enter Big Ten play 5-0 for the first time since 2011 with two top-10 wins under their belt. With Ohio State (No. 4), Indiana (No. 6), and Michigan State (No. 8) ranked among the best in the country, Maryland will need a few more to claim a Big Ten title. But if Monday night is any indicator, the Terps have the tools they need to contend both in the conference and on the national stage.

Heavyweights Collide: No. 2 Maryland vs. No. 5 Georgetown Headlines Labor Day Weekend

The men’s soccer slate continues to ramp up this weekend, with plenty of notable action across the conference.

Prime-Time Battle: Undefeated Terrapins, Hoyas Meet in College Park

No. 2 Maryland, the highest-ranked team in the Big Ten, welcomes No. 5 Georgetown to College Park looking for its second top-10 win of the season. Undefeated so far, the Terps aim to close out their early non-conference slate with another resume-building victory before heading into Big Ten play.

The Terrapins have allowed just three goals behind reigning Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year Laurin Mack. But they now face a Hoyas offense led by unanimous All-Big East First Team selection Mitchell Baker, a forward who has scored three times already this season. On the other side, Said El Eyssami (two goals) and the Maryland offense will look to break a Georgetown defense that has given up just two goals in four games.

Across the conference, there were notable moments this week:

Ohio State’s Isaiah Chisolm scored a hat trick in the Buckeyes’ 5-0 win over Northern Kentucky, with his third coming on this penalty kick. The senior is up to seven goals on the season, tied for the Big Ten lead.
Tied with Chisholm is Washington’s Zach Ramsey, who found the net once again in Washington’s 2-2 draw with Cal State Fullerton.
Rutgers continues its homestand on Monday night against No. 21 UC Santa Barbara.

Big Ten Network Celebrates Season 20

As the Big Ten Network begins Season 20, the network is highlighting two decades of the Big Ten’s top games, remarkable moments and noteworthy student-athletes with a collection of new original programming. As part of the celebratory year, BTN also announced Thrivent as the presenting sponsor of BTN Season 20 and DIRECTV as the associate sponsor.

As the 20th season of football gets underway, all 18 Big Ten programs will be featured throughout the first three weeks of BTN’s television schedule. Additionally, B1G Tailgate will begin its 10th season with on-site visits to the last two National Champions, beginning with a trip to Ohio State on Saturday, Sept. 5, followed by a show from Indiana on Saturday, Sept. 12.

B1G Network Season 20: 20 Moments: Debuting later this fall, a series hosted by acclaimed sportswriter and columnist Gene Wojciechowski takes fans through 20 of the most memorable moments covered by BTN over the last two decades. Highlights include the first Iowa Wave, Nebraska volleyball setting an attendance record at Memorial Stadium and Indiana’s Curt Cignetti’s introduction to the Big Ten.

Original Documentaries: Over the last 20 years, the Big Ten Conference and its 18 institutions have played a significant role in the growth of women’s sports. The B1G Story: Rise of Women’s Sports provides a look at how the Big Ten was at the forefront of this movement and features sit-down interviews with an array of guests including former Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany, former Iowa women’s basketball head coach Lisa Bluder, former Nebraska volleyball head coach John Cook, Northwestern lacrosse head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller and trailblazing broadcaster Lisa Byington, among others.

A second new edition of The B1G Story will debut in 2027, highlighting the Big Ten Network’s commitment to providing educational opportunities to current and former students across all 18 Big Ten campuses. Through three defining programs – BTN NOW, the BTN Experience and StudentU – over 8,000 participants have received hands-on training, individualized feedback and future career opportunities in the broadcast industry. This upcoming documentary will explore these programs, the people behind them and their impact across the conference.

B1G Network Season 20: Moments and Memories: From day one, five on-air personalities have been a part of the Big Ten Network, helping shape the network into what it is today. Later this year, Dave Revsine, Rick Pizzo, Mike Hall, Howard Griffith and Gerry DiNardo will sit down for a roundtable discussion to reflect on the origins of the network, relive their favorite moments over the last two decades and share stories of working together from the very beginning of BTN.

Alongside the original programming, BTN is set to air two school-specific vignettes for all 18 schools throughout the season. These 36 vignettes will highlight notable athletic achievements from each Big Ten program that aired on BTN, including Jonathan Taylor leading Wisconsin to a walk-off triple-overtime victory over Purdue in 2018, Minnesota’s Rachel Banham scoring an NCAA-record-tying 60 points against Northwestern in 2016 and Penn State wrestling setting the all-time NCAA attendance record for an indoor dual during a win over Iowa in 2025.

Defensive Top-10 Win Pushes Terps to 3-0

No better time for your first career goal than in a top-10 matchup! In the 81^st minute of No. 4 Maryland’s contest against No. 9 High Point, freshman forward Rodrigo Neri cut past a defender and buried a shot in the lower right corner, giving the Terps a 1-0 lead and the eventual game-winner over the Panthers. Huskies Lose a Thriller in Corvallis

No. 11 Washington dropped its ranked matchup against No. 25 Oregon State Sunday night by a score of 4-3. The seesaw affair saw Washington take the early lead, followed by two straight Beaver goals before the Huskies tied it back up on Egor Akulov’s second goal of the night. Offensive power pushes Washington to top-three win

Last night’s performance against No. 3 Portland embodied the Huskies’ “early and often” offensive approach, as No. 11 Washington led the number three team in the nation 3-0 just 15 minutes into the contest. The Purple and Gold went on to win 4-2 to claim the pivotal Pacific Northwest victory. Since dropping their home opener, the Huskies have stormed back to notch eight goals in two games. Contentious postseason rematch next

Now, the Huskies head to Corvallis for a border-state battle against former conference foe No. 25 Oregon State. Big Ten Announces Hosts For 2026-27 Olympic Sports Tournaments And Championships

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference on Thursday announced the dates and host sites for 2026-27 Olympic sports championships and tournaments. For the second consecutive year, all Big Ten Women’s Olympic Sports Championships & Tournaments will be presented by Allstate, the title sponsor of the Allstate Big Ten Women’s Championship Series. A complete schedule is below.

The first postseason hardware of the fall will be handed out on October 30 in Madison, Wisconsin, at the 2026 Big Ten Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championships on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, which hosted the 2024 NCAA Championships and numerous NCAA Regionals. The following weekend, the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament will take place at Ohio State’s Buckeye Varsity Field from Nov. 4-8, and the quarter- and semifinals of the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament unfold at Energizer Park, home of Major League Soccer’s St. Louis CITY SC. The women’s tournament champion will be determined on Nov. 13 on the home field of the highest remaining seed, and the men’s soccer tournament title also will be handed out on Nov. 15 on the highest remaining seed’s campus.

The winter championships begin in the pool with the Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships taking place Feb. 17-20 in Iowa City, and the Men’s Championships from Feb. 24-27 at Purdue’s Morgan J. Burke Aquatics Center. The 2027 Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships return to the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion Feb. 25-27.

For the first time, the Big Ten Wrestling Championships will be hosted at a neutral site, Columbus’ Nationwide Arena, home of the NHL’s Blue Jackets. The conference that has produced 19 consecutive NCAA team champions will gather in Ohio’s capital city March 6-7.

The Big Ten Ice Hockey tournament title will be determined on March 19 at the home of the highest remaining seed in the tournament, and the winter season will conclude with Women’s Gymnastics March 19-20 at Ohio State, and Men’s Gymnastics April 2-3 at Penn State.

Spring action gets underway April 22-25 with the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament at Illinois’ Atkins Tennis Center. The Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships will be contested April 23-25 at Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania. From April 28-May 2, the Women’s Lacrosse Tournament heads west for the first time at USC’s Rawlinson Stadium. That same weekend Men’s Tennis will determine a tournament champion at Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, and the Men’s Golf Championships will take place at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey.

The Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament will be held May 6-8 at Penn State’s Panzer Stadium. Big Ten Softball will determine its tournament champion May 12-15 at Bowlin Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships head to TrackTown USA, Eugene, Oregon, at historic Hayward Field, while the Big Ten Rowing Championships return to the Indianapolis Rowing Center May 15-16.

For the eighth consecutive year, the final Big Ten tournament title of the season will be handed out in Omaha, Nebraska, where the Big Ten Baseball Tournament will be played at Charles Schwab Field Omaha from May 25-30.

UCLA Pulls off the Road Upset

The action officially kicked off on Thursday, August 20, headlined by the UCLA Bruins, who opened with a cross-country win over No. 11 Virginia. Earlier this Week: Reigning Champs Claim the Top Spot in Big Ten Preseason Poll

For the first time since 2018, a team from the Big Ten stood at the college soccer mountaintop in 2025, with the Washington Huskies winning the first national championship in program history. Now, entering the 2026 season, Washington is still the team to beat, coming in at No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll .

The Huskies lead the way as one of three conference teams in the top 25. Not too far behind them is Maryland — who lost to Washington in the Elite Eight in 2025 — coming in at No. 7, while Indiana comes in at No. 22; Michigan also received votes.

The conference also unveiled its 2026 Big Ten Players to Watch List, selected by the head coaches, headlined by six returning First-Team All-Big Ten selections from a season ago. That group is anchored by three stars from the reigning national champions — midfielders Alex Hall and Zach Ramsey alongside defender Harrison Bertos — as well as Maryland junior Laurin Mack, the reigning Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year. Also highlighting the list is Michigan State midfielder Peter Soudan, who returns following a standout 2025 Big Ten Freshman of the Year campaign.

Washington Tabbed as Big Ten Men’s Soccer Preseason Favorite

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Washington Huskies have been selected as the favorite to win the 2026 Big Ten Conference crown, according to a vote of the league’s head coaches released on Tuesday.

The reigning NCAA champions and the No. 1 ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, Washington claimed seven first place votes and two second place nods to take the top spot.

Maryland finished second, just ahead of Indiana, while 2025 Big Ten Tournament champion, UCLA, and tournament runner-up, Michigan, placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

The conference also unveiled the 2026 Big Ten Players to Watch List on Tuesday, as selected by the league’s coaches. Included in the list are nine student-athletes who earned All-Big Ten recognition in 2025. Among them are six First Team honorees, including Goalkeeper of the Year Laurin Mack from Maryland, and Freshman of the Year Peter Soudan from Michigan State.

The 2026 Big Ten Men’s Soccer season kicks off on Thursday, with all 11 teams in action.

Big Ten Announces 2026 Men’s Soccer Broadcast Schedule

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Seventeen Big Ten regular season men’s soccer matches will air live on Big Ten Network during the 2026 campaign.

Coverage will begin on the first day of the regular season, Thursday, August 20, as reigning NCAA champion Washington plays host to San Diego. Maryland, the 2025 Big Ten regular season champion, will host Georgetown in nonconference action on Monday, Sept. 7.

The first of 14 conference matchups will take place on Tuesday, September 15, as Northwestern visits Michigan State. Reigning Big Ten Tournament champion UCLA will visit Penn State on Monday, Sept. 28.

The 2026 broadcast schedule includes a doubleheader on Tuesday, October 6, as Rutgers welcomes Maryland to Piscataway in the opener, followed by a nonconference tilt between Kentucky and Indiana from Bloomington.

BTN will also feature a match on Wednesday, November 4, the final day of the regular season. That match will be determined at a later date.

Big Ten Network will also cover the 2026 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament semifinals and championship, with the semifinals slated for Wednesday, Nov. 11 and the championship on Sunday, Nov. 15.

In addition to the Big Ten Network linear lineup, Big Ten games and nonconference contests will be streamed on B1G+, the network’s subscription streaming service, providing access to stream 2,700 more games and next-day on-demand archives.

Big Ten Recognizes 2025-26 Distinguished Scholar Award Recipients

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that 1,962 students on varsity rosters have earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The list includes students from all 18 institutions, plus Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame and 41 sports who have recorded a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.

The 2025-26 class of Distinguished Scholar Award Recipients includes 359 students who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the previous academic year, represented in bold on the official list.

Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must have earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.

Big Life Series Showcases the Spirit of the Pacific Northwest

PORTLAND, Ore. - As the sun set over the rolling hills of Cooper Mountain Vineyards on Saturday evening, “Big Life Series: Pacific Northwest” concluded its immersive educational experience where student-athletes from all 18 Big Ten institutions learned firsthand about the rich culture and history of the Pacific Northwest.

Over the course of less than 48 hours, over 175 student-athletes and administrators engaged in programming that included visits to Multnomah Falls, the Oregon Historical Society, the Grande Ronde Reservation, and Cooper Mountain Vineyards. The event brought together participants from all 18 Big Ten institutions, creating opportunities for learning, dialogue, and relationship-building among student-athletes from across the conference.

“Big Life Series: Pacific Northwest was a remarkable experience that allowed attendees to better understand and interact with the history, culture, landscape, and people that give the Pacific Northwest its distinct identity,” said Big Ten Chief Operating Officer Kerry Kenny. “The unique opportunity to connect student-athletes from across the country to an immersive experience outside of their traditional element is what distinguishes the Big Ten in preparing these young men and women for life after campus.”

At the Oregon Historical Society on Saturday morning, student-athletes learned about how Oregon became the state it is today, including the often-untold Black, Native American, and Japanese history that has shaped the state. Participants also toured the Yasui Family exhibit, learning about the challenges Japanese Americans faced during World War II and the advocacy efforts that helped advance civil rights in the decades that followed.

The quote on the back of the Big Life Series: Pacific Northwest T-shirt: “What is done to the least of us can be done to all of us” was from Presidential Medal of Freedom winner Minori Yasui.

“I found his bravery in speaking out about these issues incredible,” said Indiana women’s track & field sprinter Kristina Vincic. “Having a voice isn’t an easy thing and it takes time to build one. That’s something we can definitely tie in to our teams.”

After learning about Native American history at the Oregon Historical Society, participants experienced its living impact firsthand at the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Veterans Powwow. Student-athletes learned about the traditional longhouse, witnessed cultural traditions, and took part in the Grand Entry ceremony.

Often competitors on the field, student-athletes joined together to dance with members of the Grande Ronde Confederation and in honoring Veterans. For many student-athletes, it is the moment they said they will remember most about the trip.

“It was beautiful seeing the tradition unfold right before my eyes and getting involved with it,” said Penn State football student-athlete Armstrong Nnodim. “As athletes we get caught up in the competitive world, so to come here and bond with everyone from different backgrounds was amazing.”

Launched in 2022, the Big Life Series is part of the Big Ten’s commitment to providing educational and developmental opportunities beyond competition. The Pacific Northwest program represented the latest installment of the initiative, connecting student-athletes with the people, places, and histories that shape communities throughout the conference’s expanded footprint.

Big Life Series Heads to the Pacific Northwest

ROSEMONT, Ill. - As part of the “Big Life Series: Pacific Northwest”, the Big Ten will host over 150 student-athletes, coaches and administrators from all 18 Big Ten schools in Portland, Ore. from Friday, July 10 to Sunday, July 12. The program is designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the region’s rich history, culture and communities through an immersive educational experience.

Programming will begin Friday evening with a nature walk through Multnomah Falls to showcase the region’s deep ties to nature and the history of the Pacific Northwest landscape.

On Saturday, student-athletes will visit the Oregon Historical Society and have the chance to learn about the Japanese American West Coast experience and hear firsthand from a member of the Oregon Black Pioneers. Through discussions centered on resilience, community, and historical impact, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the individuals and stories that have shaped the Pacific Northwest.

The group will then travel to the Grand Ronde Reservation for a Veterans Powwow, which will provide an opportunity to engage with living cultural traditions and better understand the history, values and contributions of the Native American communities across the region.

The evening will conclude with a dinner at Cooper Mountain Vineyard, where student-athletes will have a hands-on discussion about the agricultural history of the region and the grape-growing operation.

The Big Life series is an immersive educational experience started in 2022 that focuses on engaging, educating, and empowering Big Ten student-athletes, coaches, and administrators. With trips to Selma, Alabama; Mount Vernon, Iowa; and Portland, Oregon attendees learn about the historical and cultural significance of the region. Since its inception, over 500 students-athletes have participated in these programs. Along with the educational component of the experience, the Big Ten uses these trips to leave a lasting impact in the communities it visits.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- The Big Ten Conference has been named the Division I winner of the 2026 NCAA/MOAA Opportunities and Impact Award, the NCAA and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association — an affiliate of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics — announced Thursday.

The award recognizes and celebrates the initiatives, programs and efforts of athletics departments and conference offices in Divisions I, II and III that embrace environments of belonging and well-being and elevate the student-athlete voice in intercollegiate athletics communities. NCAA and MOAA representatives will present the awards June 7-10 in Las Vegas during the MOAA Symposium.

"We're proud to accept this honor on behalf of our 18 schools, whose support makes these initiatives possible," Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti said.

Omar Brown, Big Ten senior vice president for community and impact, added, "This humbling recognition is a direct result of the leadership and alignment we have from Commissioner Petitti, throughout the conference office, and in collaboration with our campuses. Big Ten student-athletes always are aiming for excellence in competition, in the classroom and in their communities. We will continue to build on this foundation to create transformational opportunities for their development and deliver impact to the many locales we call home across the nation throughout the year."

The Big Ten Conference continues to engage, educate and empower its student-athletes, coaches, administrators and its broader community base with programs, initiatives and engagements that make a difference and encourage positive change. For four years, student-athletes from Big Ten schools have traveled to Alabama for an immersive journey that included learning about the Civil Rights Movement, visits to historic sites, community service projects and panel sessions with local leaders. The Big Ten has also added new elements to the transformative experience each year to deepen understanding and inspire civic responsibility.

Additionally, the conference creates leadership opportunities for its student-athletes. It partners with James Russell Lowell Elementary School in Indianapolis, connecting its 18 member schools with classrooms that include mentorship and encouragement via virtual meetings.

Another one of its many initiatives are structured conversations with administrators, coaches, athletes and employees to gather feedback and to inform future strategies. Examples include conducting student-athlete experience exit surveys and hosting standing committees, commissions and leadership councils to discuss progress, share feedback and assess strategic alignment. The conference also hosts numerous inclusive programs such as United as One, the B1G Fellows Program, the Student-Athlete Issues Commission, The Women's Volleyball Mentorship Program and the CBS Sports Ambassador Program & Sports Journalism Initiative. The conference also promotes several awards programs, which includes the Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award to recognize student-athletes who demonstrate leadership, service and volunteerism.

Along with the Big Ten, Saint Michael's College athletics department was recognized in Division II, and Occidental College's athletics department was the Division III honoree.

Discover, Big Ten Present Custom Jackets To Jackie Robinson Award Honorees

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Presenting sponsor Discover will deliver custom letterwinner jackets to all 36 institutional winners of the 2025-26 Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award, the Big Ten announced Wednesday. Each university’s male and female honoree will receive a customized, one-of-one gift featuring unique school elements and visuals.

The first two custom jackets were presented in December at the Discover Big Ten Football Championship Game to 2025 national winners Dillon Fontus, from Maryland football, and Iowa wrestler Nanea Estrella.

Both of last year’s winners, and Sonya Pankey Robinson (Jackie Robinson’s granddaughter), attended the game as guests of Discover, seeing Indiana claim the title at Lucas Oil Stadium on their way to a perfect 16-0 campaign and CFP National Championship. The 2026 national winners will be announced later this spring from the cohort of 36 campus recipients.

In November, the Big Ten Conference announced the 36 student-athletes selected as institutional winners of the 2025-26 Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award presented by Discover. Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Beyond his athletic prowess, he continues to be recognized and honored for his contributions off the field: integrating Major League Baseball and his lifelong commitment to social justice. He is the embodiment of the Big Ten's mission to develop strong student leaders, and this program honors his legacy and core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. New “We Are Here” spot highlights student success, economic impact

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Big Ten universities’ leading role in educating students and driving economic prosperity is featured the latest edition in the “We Are Here” series of :30 ads .

The new ad began airing during Big Ten basketball games and other winter sports in January. Students and alumni take center stage, sharing with viewers what their lives look like and what they have been able to accomplish thanks to their Big Ten university education. Seen on campuses and in communities nationwide, their experiences are living proof of the world-class educational opportunities they received, from learning alongside Nobel Prize–winning faculty to participating in internships and undergraduate research. The spot also highlights the universities’ broader impact through innovation, job creation and service.

Together, the 18 members of the Big Ten Conference are educating more than 810,000 students, preparing them for successful lives and careers. The Big Ten’s collective graduation rate is more than 20 points above the national average and the universities have more than 9.2 million living alumni.

The first ad in the “We Are Here” series began airing last fall and has generated more than 250 million impressions across Big Ten broadcasts to date, including during the College Football Playoff National Championship won by Indiana University. Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission Calls for Limitations or Ban of Individual Prop Betting on College Athletics

ROSEMONT, Ill. — [February, 10, 2026] — The Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission (SAIC) today sent a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker urging the NCAA to continue pushing for limitations or the outright elimination of proposition (“prop”) betting involving individual student-athletes competing in college athletics. The letter reinforces the Big Ten Conference’s unwavering commitment to protecting the well-being and safety of student-athletes across all 18 Big Ten campuses, and the integrity of intercollegiate athletics.

“The Big Ten Conference is proud to support our student-athletes in calling for the restriction or elimination of individual proposition wagers on college athletics,” said Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti. "The Big Ten Conference appreciates the NCAA’s effort to eliminate these wagers and will continue to assist student-athletes as they deal with the challenges that result from proposition bets in college sports.”

President Baker recently sent letters to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and to State Gambling Commissions calling for amended state laws and regulations to better-protect student-athletes.

The letter from the Big Ten Conference SAIC outlines the growing concerns around the rise of individual performance prop wagering in college sports, including:

Increased harassment student-athletes experience because of wagers on individual-performance proposition wagers
Negative impact individual-performance proposition betting has on student-athletes’ mental health
Accusations of impropriety, even when unfounded, damage the student-athlete experience
Potentially jeopardizing the integrity of athletic competition

“While we understand that sports betting is becoming increasingly more common across the country and allows for states to generate increased tax revenue, prop betting represents unique risks at the college level,” the Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission wrote. “We believe protecting student-athletes must be a priority. Limiting or eliminating prop betting on college athletics would be a meaningful step toward reducing harassment, protecting mental well-being, and preserving the integrity of college competition.”

The Big Ten Conference SAIC was founded in 1994. SAIC members take an active role in monthly meetings discussing the issues most important to Big Ten Conference student-athletes and highlighting ongoing initiatives on their respective campuses. SAIC executive leadership members also represent Big Ten student-athletes in front of the Conference’s Joint Group council and represent the Big Ten Conference on the NCAA’s Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where they review NCAA activities, proposed legislation and offer feedback on behalf of the Big Ten’s student-athletes. Student-athletes are nominated by their institution and appointed by the Conference’s Joint Group Executive Committee to serve on the commission for one academic year.

14 Big Ten Players Selected in MLS SuperDraft 2026

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Fourteen Big Ten student-athletes from five nine schools were selected in the MLS SuperDraft 2026 on Thursday afternoon.

Fresh off its first national championship, Washington led the Big Ten with five selections, the most of any program in the draft and the most draft picks Washington has had selected since 2022 when five Huskies were also picked.

Three players, including a pair from the Washington, were selected in the first round. Big Ten Midfielder of the Year Richie Aman led way as the No. 8 selection by D.C. United, followed by Michigan defender at No. 9 by Orlando City. Washington midfielder Zach Ramsey was selected by Vancouver Whitecaps FC at No. 17.

This marks the fifth consecutive year the Big Ten has had at least 13 MLS draft picks.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Three Big Ten men’s soccer student-athletes have been selected as Academic All-Americans by members of the College Sports Communicators (CSC), the organization announced on Tuesday. Washington’s Richie Aman was named to the First Team, while UCLA’s Sergi Solans Ormo claimed a spot on the Second Team and Rutgers’ Joschi Schelb on the Third Team.

The 2025 Academic All-America Men's Soccer Teams are selected by College Sports Communicators to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the men's soccer season and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes men's soccer honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.

Aman, who was recently named a First Team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches, has started all 24 matches for the Huskies and ranks third in the country with a Big Ten-best 14 assists. The psychology major was also named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year while leading Washington to its first NCAA championship on Monday night.

Solans Ormo joined Aman with All-America honors, securing a Second Team selection. The sophomore International Development Studies major started all 19 fixtures and led the Bruins with 16 goals and 38 points, including a program record three hat tricks. One of those hat tricks came in the Big Ten Tournament championship game, the first in tournament final history, leading UCLA to the 2025 Big Ten Tournament championship.

Schelb earned All-Big Ten Second Team accolades after leading the Scarlet Knights with seven goals, four assists, and 18 total points. The junior economics major scored six goals in Rutgers’ first six games, including a hat trick against William & Mary, the program’s first since 2016.

In order to be considered for Academic All-America status, students must not only maintain a minimum 3.30 GPA, but must also be a starter or key reserve, competing in at least 50 percent of their school’s contests.

Washington Wins NCAA Men's Soccer Title

CARY, N.C. – Harrison Bertos’ 92^nd minute goal proved to be the difference, as Washington claimed its first men’s soccer national championship with a 3-2 overtime win over No. 15 seed N.C. State in the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament final at WakeMed Park in Cary, N.C.

After surrendering a game-tying goal in the 87^th minute, the Huskies responded early in overtime as Egor Akulov found Bertos for the championship-winning goal, the junior’s fifth marker of the season.

Washington grabbed the lead late in the first half, as Zach Ramsey opened the scoring in the 44^th minute. The Huskies doubled their lead in the 62^nd minute, as Richie Aman found Joe Dale for a two-goal cushion.

The Wolfpack responded just four minutes later before leveling the score in the 87^th minute.

Washington claims its first men’s soccer national championship in its second title game appearance. The Huskies also reached the final in 2021.

Ramsey was named the Offensive Most Outstanding Player (MOP), while goaltender Jadon Bowton recorded five saves to earn Defensive MOP honors. Richie Aman, Asher Hestad, and Charlie Kosakoff were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Tonight’s win marks the 13^thNCAA men’s soccer title for the Big Ten and the first since Maryland won the crown in 2018.

Five Big Ten Conference teams have been selected to participate in the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship: Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, UCLA, and Washington. Three of them, Michigan, UCLA, and Washington will open the tournament with first round contests on Thursday, Nov. 20, while Indiana and Maryland earned national seeds and byes into Sunday's second round.

The 48-team field is made up of automatic qualifiers from 22 conferences and 26 teams selected at-large. All first-round games will be played Thursday, Nov. 20, on campus sites, while all second-round action will take place Sunday, Nov. 23. The third round will be played Nov. 29 and 30, while the quarterfinals will be played Dec. 5 and 6.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Five Big Ten men’s soccer standouts from four schools were named to the 2025 United Soccer Coaches All-America Teams, the coaching organization recently announced.

Maryland defender Lasse Kelp and Washington midfielder Richie Aman were named to the First Team, while forwards Palmer Ault from Indiana and Sergi Solans Ormo from UCLA claimed Second Team honors. Washington defender Harrison Bertos scored Third Team accolades.

The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Kelp was the cornerstone of one of the nation's top defensive units, playing all 1,730 minutes this season for the Terps — the full 90 in every match, plus 110 in the NCAA Tournament game vs. UNC. Maryland led the Big Ten in goal differential and posted shutouts in nine games, allowing just 12 goals in the regular season.

Aman has been a key offensive force for Washington, tallying 13 assists and four goals for 21 total points. He's already been lauded as the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, a First Team All-Big Ten selection, and a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.

Ault, the Big Offensive Player of the Year, recorded 16 goals and 10 assists in 19 matches, becoming the first Big Ten player since 2001 to record 15 goals and 10 assists in a single season. His 42 points are tied for first in NCAA Division I.

Solans Ormo earned his second All-America honor after starting all 19 games and leading the Bruins in goals (16) and points (38). For his efforts, Solans Ormo was named first-team All-Big Ten and the Big Ten Tournament's most outstanding player after recording four goals and two assists in the tournament, including the tournament’s first-ever hat trick in the final.

Bertos has anchored a stout Husky defense that has recorded nine shutouts this season, including two 1-0 NCAA Tournament victories over ranked opponents. Bertos has also chipped in three goals, including two game winners, while earning First Team All-Big Ten honors.

The list of honorees includes 134 field hockey students, 800 football students, 140 men’s and 201 women’s cross country students, 155 men’s and 276 women’s soccer students and 146 volleyball students.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team (as verified by being on the official squad list as of Nov. 1 for fall sports), have been enrolled full time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four players from Big Ten teams have been selected among the top 45 invitees for the 2025 MLS College Showcase, which will take place from December 10-13 in Mesa, Ariz.

Maryland’s Lasse Kelp, Sadam Masereka, and Stephane Njike will join UCLA’s Tre Wright at the four-day talent evaluation event that gives technical staffs from MLS clubs an opportunity to scout top collegiate prospects in the nation ahead of 2026 MLS SuperDraft, which will take place on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. ET. Please note that the list of attendees is subject to change prior to the event.

“Each year we see young breakout players who previously shined at the MLS College Showcase go on to make a meaningful impact at the first-team level,” said Alecko Eskandarian, Vice President, Player Relations & Player Development. “This event is a crucial opportunity for our clubs to evaluate the nation’s top collegiate talent, and we are thrilled to welcome these 45 standout individuals to a life-changing showcase in Arizona this year.”

Among the notable standouts from last year’s College Showcase who went on to make an impact in the MLS this season is former Indiana standout Jansen Miller (2022-24). Miller was selected with the No. 8 overall selection by Sporting Kansas City in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft. Miller made 29 appearances, starting 25, and logging 2,305 minutes throughout the regular season - the most minutes played by any 2025 SuperDraft pick.

The 2025 MLS College Showcase is a closed-door scouting event officially sanctioned by the NCAA. The eligible player list for 2026 MLS SuperDraft will be announced at a later date following the 2025 MLS College Showcase.

Dillan Fontus of Maryland Football and Nanea Estrella, a member of the Iowa Women's Wrestling team, were named the inaugural national winners last spring. Both will be hosted in Indianapolis next month and recognized on the field during the 2025 Discover Big Ten Football Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday, December 6 (8pm ET; FOX).

Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Beyond his athletic prowess, he continues to be recognized and honored for his contributions off the field: integrating Major League Baseball and his lifelong commitment to social justice. He is the embodiment of the Big Ten's mission to develop strong student leaders, and we honor his legacy and core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. As Jackie famously said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

Honorees were selected based on the following criteria:

Demonstrated Impact: Significant and tangible contributions to community projects or causes, including measurable outcomes or positive changes resulting from their involvement.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with others, including peers, organizations, and community members, to achieve common goals and enhance community impact.
Consistency and Commitment: Ongoing and consistent participation in community service activities over an extended period of time.
Visibility and Advocacy: Efforts to raise awareness and advocate for important groups or causes, leveraging their platform to promote positive change and engage others.

Five Teams Selected to Compete in NCAA Tournament

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Five teams will represent the Big Ten in the 2025 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament, the NCAA announced during Monday’s tournament selection show. Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, UCLA, and Washington will compete in the event, which is set to begin on Thursday, November 20.

Indiana and Michigan were listed among the 16 nationally seeded teams who earned a first-round bye and will host second round matches on Sunday.

Indiana will make its NCAA-record 39th consecutive tournament appearance and 50th overall, tied for second most in NCAA history. The Hoosiers will open play on Sunday at Noon ET, as they welcome the winner of Saint Louis and Kentucky to Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Maryland will make its 42nd NCAA Tournament appearance on Sunday, when it plays host to the winner of North Carolina and North Florida. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET at Maryland’s Ludwig Field.

Michigan earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and 10th time in program history. The Wolverines will face Notre Dame in Thursday’s opening round. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. ET at U-M Soccer Stadium in Ann Arbor.

Fresh off its first Big Ten Tournament title on Sunday, UCLA will look to extend its current five-match win streak on Thursday when it hosts WAC Tournament champion Grand Canyon. The Bruins will kickoff their 50th tournament appearance and fifth in a row under head coach Ryan Jorden at 10 p.m. ET at Wallis Annenberg Stadium in Los Angeles.

Washington will make its 30th all-time tournament appearance and 12th in the last 14 years on Thursday. The Huskies will travel to Corvallis, Ore. to face WCC runner-up Oregon State. The former Pac-12 rivals will meet at 9 p.m. ET.

The 2025 NCAA College Cup will include semifinal and championship matches are scheduled for Dec. 12 and 15, respectively, at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The fourth seeded UCLA Bruins earned their first Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament title today, with a 5-0 win over No. 3 seed Michigan in the championship match at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md. With the win, the Bruins earn the Big Ten’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Redshirt sophomore Sergi Solans Ormo was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after finishing the week with 10 points on four goals and two assists. With three goals in today’s win, Solans Ormo set a program record with three hat tricks on the season and became the first player with a hat trick in the Big Ten Tournament championship game.

UCLA opened the scoring in the 13th minute, when Konstantinos Georgallides converted a rebound from a Solans Ormo shot attempt. Solans Ormo then took over the game, notching a natural hat trick with markers in the 38th, 52nd, and 60th minutes. Less than a 90 seconds later, Georgallides completed his brace with an unassisted tally.

Bruins’ goaltender Kevin Box posted one save to score his fifth clean sheet of the season.

The announcement of the 48-team field for the 2025 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship will be made at 1 p.m. ET Monday on NCAA.com .

Big Ten Announces 2025 Men’s Soccer Postseason Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced the 2025 Men’s Soccer All-Big Ten teams and individual honors on Thursday, following a vote of the league’s 11 head coaches.

Four schools were represented among the individual six awards. Maryland claimed a trio of awards, as senior Lasse Kelp, sophomore Laurin Mack, and head coach Sasho Cirovski were named Defensive Player, Goalkeeper, and Coach of the Year, respectively.

Indiana senior Palmer Ault was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Washington senior Richie Aman claimed Midfielder of the Year honors. Michigan State’s Peter Soudan was tabbed as Freshman of the Year.

Ault was named the league’s top offensive player after leading the country with 42 points and 16 goals, while his 10 assists are good for fourth. Ault‘s 42 points are the most in the conference since Penn State’s Corey Hertzog posted 46 in 2010. The Noblesville, Ind. native becomes the second consecutive Hoosier named Offensive Player of the Year and fourth since 2009.

Aman becomes the first Husky to win a Big Ten award. The midfielder from Hanover, N.H. leads the Big Ten and ranks third in Division I with 11 assists and 0.65 helpers per game. Aman has recorded five multi-assists games, including against both Rutgers and Indiana, and moves into a tie for fourth in the Washington record book for assists in a single campaign.

Kelp becomes he second consecutive Terrapin named Defensive Player of the Year and the third all-time. The Bonn, Germany native anchored a defense that surrendered just 12 goals on the season, a feat accomplished by just 18 teams. Kelp has remained on the pitch for every one of Maryland’s 1,350 minutes this season and added a goal and two assists to the offensive attack.

Similarly, Mack, a fellow German from Emmendingen, has also played every minute of the season between the Terrapins’ pipes. Mack posted eight shutouts on the season, tied for the Big Ten lead, including five in conference play. The sophomore posted a .793 save percentage, best in the Big Ten, to become Maryland’s first Goalkeeper of the Year since Cody Niedemeier in 2016.

Soudan becomes the fifth Spartan named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and first since Jonathan Stout in 2022. The midfielder from Western Springs, Ill., appeared in all 16 matches, recording 15 starts, for Michigan State and tied for the team’s lead with 10 points. Soudan also led the team with four assists, while his three goals ranked second.

Cirovski earns his third Big Ten Coach of the Year accolade after leading the Terrapins to a 12-0-3 record and the program’s fourth Big Ten championship. After being unranked on Sept. 16, the Terrapins have risen to the top of the latest United Soccer Coaches poll on the strength of an offensive attack that posts a nation’s best 8.87 points per contest.

The Big Ten also recognized 11 Sportsmanship Award honorees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

The 2025 Big Ten Tournament will return to action on Sunday, as Michigan and UCLA meet in the Big Ten Tournament championship match, with the winner earning the Big Ten’s automatic berth into the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. at Maryland’s Ludwig Field in College Park, Md. The match will air live on Big Ten Network and the Fox Sports App.

Maryland Claims Big Ten Men’s Soccer Title

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The University of Maryland clinched the 2025 Big Ten Men’s Soccer championship with a 4-3 win at Michigan State in Friday’s regular season finale. With the victory, the Terrapins will claim the top seed in this week’s Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament. Maryland will also host the four-team tournament at Ludwig Field beginning on Wednesday.

The No. 1-ranked Terrapins improved to 12-0-3 on the season and 8-0-2 in Big Ten play to secure their fourth Big Ten title and first since 2022. Sadam Masereka powered the Maryland attack netting three goals in a span of 11:17 midway through the first half. Back-to-back Michigan State goals pulled the Spartans to within 3-2 but Masereka found Stephane Njike for an insurance goal in the 83rd minute.

With the conclusions of all regular season matches, the field for the 2025 Big Ten Men’s soccer Tournament is now set. The four-team tournament is set to begin with a pair of semifinal matches on Wednesday, with the championship tilt set for Sunday afternoon.

No. 2 seed Washington (7-3) will face No. 3 seed Michigan (6-2-2) in the first semifinal match at 4 p.m. Wednesday’s semifinal nightcap will feature top seed Maryland facing No. 4 seed UCLA (5-3-2) at 7 p.m.

Wednesday’s winners will meet in Sunday’s championship match, scheduled for 3 p.m., with the champion earning the Big Ten’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Both semifinals and the championship match will be televised live on the Big Ten Network and can be streamed via the web, smartphones, tablets and connected devices through the FOX Sports App.

Tickets for the tournament are now available at the Terrapin Ticket Office . Tickets for Wednesday’s semifinal doubleheader and Sunday’s championship match are $25 for adults, $10 for youth and seniors and $1 For college students.
