Four more Big Ten teams started their 2026-27 campaigns over the weekend, including the back-to-back-to-back defending Big Ten Champion Michigan State. Wisconsin notched two huge early season wins, and Michigan's offense showed it has no plans of slowing down after leading the Big Ten in goals last year.
Ranked Road Sweep for the Badgers
In its first ranked series of the season, No. 7 Wisconsin visited No. 19 Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. and outscored the Mavericks 8-1 over two games. Brent Solomon (first NCAA goal) and Oliver Tulk scored within 39 seconds of each other in the first period of the series opener to set the tone for the weekend, while the Badger defense held Minnesota State to just 13 shots on goal. Alexis Cournoyer was equal to the task on all 13, recording his first Wisconsin shutout in a 4-0 win. On Saturday night, freshman Zach Wooten broke a 1-1 tie in the second period with his first career goal. Vasily Zelenov added a power play goal and Finn Brink hit an empty net to cap off the sweep with a 4-1 victory. Wisconsin outshot Minnesota State 67-31 for the weekend, advancing to 4-0-0 to begin the season, its best start since 2004-05. More from the Badgers.
Wolverines Light the Lamp 17 Times
No. 2 Michigan completed its second sweep of the season in style, pouring in 17 goals over two nights against Alaska Anchorage. Eight different Wolverines scored in Friday’s 10-1 romp, including Cole McKinney and Jack Nesbitt each tallying two goals. Jayden Perron netted a hat trick on Saturday night (giving him four for the weekend) and Michael Hage matched his collegiate high with four assists in Saturday’s 7-2 victory – including this nifty through-the-legs pass.
Jack Ivankovic backstopped the Wolverines in both games and made 41 saves on 44 shots. The latest from Ann Arbor.
Next up for Michigan, a road series against defending national champion Denver this weekend…
