With the 2026 Big Ten Volleyball Tournament less than a month away, it’s officially crunch time for contending teams. There are plenty of big matchups on the schedule this weekend, including three ranked teams facing multiple top-25 opponents.
Pivotal Weekend for Penn State
No. 16 Penn State will be under the spotlight this weekend with a two-match slate against ranked Big Ten opponents, starting with a blockbuster showdown against No. 10 Oregon. There are few teams in the country hotter than the Ducks, who have rattled off seven straight victories to improve to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in Big Ten play, currently tied for second in the league standings.
Offense will be on full display when these programs collide, as both rosters boast firepower capable of taking over a match. For the homecourt Nittany Lions, eyes will be on Kennedy Martin, whose 305 points rank second in the conference, alongside Whitney Lauenstein, who has contributed 206.5 points of her own. Meanwhile, Oregon counters with a three-pronged attack: Alanah Clemente (237 points), Sjakkie Donkers (233 points), and Valentina Vaulet (226 points) have formed an explosive core that has fueled the Ducks' win streak.
However, this clash won't be decided by firepower alone. Both teams have proven they can turn defense into transition offense, holding opponents to under a .200 hitting percentage on the season while suffocating opposing hitters. Catch it at 7 p.m. ET on B1G+.
After the matchup with the Ducks, the Nittany Lions face another ranked opponent in No. 18 Indiana in Bloomington on Sunday (3 p.m. ET on FS1). The Hoosiers are coming off a sweep of then-No. 20 Washington in Seattle and sit at 4-4 in the conference standings, led by the duo of Jaidyn Jager, who ranks seventh in the conference with 3.74 kills per set, and Ella Boersema, who boasts a .337 hit percentage. With postseason positioning hanging in the balance, these matches will be a preview of what’s to come in November.
Gophers, Huskies Prepare for Double-Ranked Slate
No. 20 Minnesota and No. 21 Washington each take on two ranked foes this weekend — culminating in a head-to-head battle in Minneapolis on Sunday.
Before they collide at Maturi Pavilion, both squads face daunting road tests against top-15 opponents on Friday night. The Huskies travel to Madison for a blockbuster clash with No. 6 Wisconsin (9 p.m. ET on BTN), while the Gophers head to West Lafayette to square off against No. 12 Purdue (7 p.m. ET on B1G+). These matchups carry heavy consequences for the Big Ten standings: Wisconsin sits tied for second at 7-1, with Washington and Minnesota trailing closely at 5-3, and Purdue sitting at an even 4-4. To steal road victories, Washington and Minnesota will need to slow down two of the league's best individual talents in Wisconsin’s Audrey Flanagan and Purdue’s Addy Tindall.
Fast forward to Sunday in Minneapolis, and both teams will be fighting to solidify their top-20 status. The Golden Gophers will lean on McKenna Wucherer — who leads the conference averaging 4.35 kills per set — to break a Washington defense that is second in the Big Ten holding opponents to a .160 hitting percentage. Minnesota’s defense is not far behind, ranking fifth with a .178 opponent hitting percentage; the Huskies’ Simona Mateska, who leads Washington’s attack with 210 kills and 246.5 points on the season, will be a test for the Gophers' frontline.
In a massive weekend for both the Gophers and Huskies, we’ll see who comes out on top and brings momentum into late October. Tune in at 2 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.
There’s plenty more to watch, including No. 1 Nebraska hosting USC in Lincoln. Check out the full schedule and standings.
