The top of the Big Ten table was crowded heading into the weekend, and after the results came in, one thing is clear: this title is going to go down to the end. With every game a grind and no result guaranteed, no team has managed to break away from the pack.
Huskies, Spartans Play to Top-10 Tie
The marquee matchup of the weekend featured No. 6 Michigan State and No. 7 Washington in East Lansing. With both programs perched near the top of the conference standings, a victory offered a direct path to sole possession of first place. Instead, the teams played to a 1-1 draw, only building up the pressure as the championship race enters its final stretch.
The home team Spartans struck first in the 27th minute courtesy of leading scorer Andrew Darakdjian’s seventh goal of the season. It gave Michigan State, who were tied for first place with 16 points entering the day, the lead going into halftime.
The Huskies answered 10 minutes into the second half. Nationally-leading goal scorer Zach Ramsey whipped a spectacular free kick from outside the box past the keeper to level the match. Ramsey’s 17th strike of the year ties him with David Berto (1989) for the third-most single-season goals in program history — leaving him just three shy of taking the spot outright.
Washington maintained the momentum after the equalizer, but a 75th-minute red card issued to defender Harrison Bertos forced head coach Jamie Clark to shift into a defensive shell. Though Michigan State applied late pressure, they were unable to capitalize on the man advantage to find a winner.
With the draw, Michigan State moves to 17 points in the Big Ten standings while Washington climbs to 14. The Huskies can move into a three-way tie for first with a win against Michigan on Monday. Hear from both the Huskies and Spartans.
Though, thanks to other results in Bloomington and Piscataway, the Spartans remain tied for first.
Wildcats, Wolverines Play Spoiler
With Washington and Michigan State dueling to a stalemate in East Lansing, both No. 4 Indiana and Rutgers had an opportunity to make a leap at the top of the table on Friday night. Instead, hard-fought draws against Northwestern and Michigan left the title race wide open.
In Bloomington, the Hoosiers — who entered the weekend tied for first with 16 points —were stymied by a stubborn Wildcats defense in a scoreless 0-0 draw. Meanwhile in Piscataway, the Scarlet Knights — sitting just one point back of the summit — fought through a wild, high-scoring 3-3 battle against the Wolverines.
The deadlock leaves Indiana and Michigan State tied atop the table with 17 points, followed closely by Rutgers with 16, while Washington (14 points) and Maryland (13 points) remain within striking distance.
Buckle up — the race for the Big Ten title is coming right down to the wire. Check out the remaining schedule and standings.
