2025 Michigan State, UCLA and Illinois Claim Big Ten Weekly Women’s Gymnastics Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference and Chi Alpha Sigma have announced a partnership to welcome all 18 conference institutions into the National College Athlete Honor Society. The arrangement makes the Big Ten the 14th collegiate athletic conference - and the first from NCAA Division I - to enroll its full membership in Chi Alpha Sigma this year. “We’re proud to establish Chi Alpha Sigma chapters across the Big Ten Conference’s18 member institutions,” said Rutgers University Faculty Athletics Representative, Thomas Stephens. “This is an opportunity to annually recognize our students who are competing at the absolute highest level in the classroom and in competition.” Seven Big Ten institutions had previous membership in Chi Alpha Sigma. Through this conference-wide partnership, all 18 Big Ten institutions will now be able to induct student-athletes of junior academic standing or higher who maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale into the National College Athlete Honor Society. “It’s incredibly exciting to welcome the Big Ten into Chi Alpha Sigma,” executive director Kellen Wells-Mangold said. “The long tradition of combined excellence in athletics and academics and continued commitment to celebrating student-athlete achievement makes the Conference a perfect fit for Chi Alpha Sigma.” Induction ceremonies will be held later this year on each Big Ten campus at times determined by the institutions. Inductees will also be eligible for additional national awards, postgraduate scholarships, and other benefits offered by Chi Alpha Sigma. “This partnership is also a personal source of pride for Chi Alpha Sigma staff, as both [assistant director] BJ Pickard and I are alumni of Big Ten institutions,” Wells-Mangold added.Wells-Mangold is a 2005 graduate of the University of Iowa, while Pickard earned his Master’s degree at the University of Washington in 2011. Chi Alpha Sigma was founded in 1996 by then-DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis. His goal was to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime. The name “Chi Alpha Sigma” was chosen to identify the organization as a national “College Athlete Society.”&nbsp; Any four-year institution with membership in an association or organization that promotes academic achievement and varsity-level athletics competition while committing to the principles of integrity, sportsmanship, and overall development of their student-athletes may apply for membership in Chi Alpha Sigma. There are currently more than 460 active chapters across all divisions of college athletics in the United States.

ROSEMONT, Ill – In honor of Jackie Robinson’s core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence, the Big Ten Conference today announced the inaugural Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community &amp; Impact Award to recognize the conference’s student-athletes who have made an exceptional impact in their local community. Coupling the academic goals set forth by leaders of the charter members of the conference with their steadfast commitment to athletics, the conference instituted the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1915, the first award to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on intercollegiate athletics. It is awarded annually by each member institution to one male and one female student of the graduating class who has attained the greatest proficiency in scholarship and athletics.In June of 2020 the conference launched the Big Ten Equality Coalition. This group, which features student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, chancellors, presidents and other members, has a stated goal of seeking tangible ways to actively and constructively combat racism and hate around the world, while also empowering student-athletes to express their rights to free speech and peaceful protest. An important initiative resulting from conversations initiated by the coalition was the Big Ten Voter Registration Initiative.In recent years, several delegations of conference student-athletes and administrators have traveled to Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, for an immersive civil rights educational experience entitled: “Big Life Series: Selma to Montgomery.” The visit to one of the key centers of the civil rights movement was highlighted by marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to learn more about the profound impact that young people had on the civil rights movement.Additionally, the Big Ten Conference is dedicated to making a lasting impact on the communities where its major events are held hosting sports clinics, renovating recreation centers, and giving elementary-aged children a behind-the-scenes experience with major Big Ten events. In all cases the conference focuses on creating meaningful improvements aimed at leaving each location better than it was found. Most recently, the Big Ten collaborated with the College Football Playoff Foundation, local sports organizations and local school districts to enhance spaces for teachers and children while providing additional educational and athletic opportunities for children.As Jackie Robison famously said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."

2025 Michigan State and Minnesota Earn Big Ten Weekly Women’s Gymnastics Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Michigan State was chosen to win the 2025 Big Ten Conference women’s gymnastics championships, according to a poll of the 12 Big Ten coaches released Tuesday.The Spartans are coming off a successful 2024 season after claiming the Big Ten regular season crown and winning the Big Ten Championships, their first conference title in school history. UCLA was picked to finish second in its inaugural season in the Big Ten, followed by Michigan at third in this year’s preseason poll. Rounding out the top five were Ohio State and Minnesota at fourth and fifth, respectively.All 12 Big Ten programs were ranked or receiving votes in the preseason Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) poll, led by No. 10 UCLA. Michigan State was close behind at 11th, followed by No. 13 Michigan, No. 16 Ohio State, No. 18 Minnesota, No. 21 Penn State, No. 22 Illinois, No. 23 Nebraska, No. 24 Maryland, No. 26 Washington and No. 29 Iowa. A little more than a year later, on August 4, 2023, the COP/C voted unanimously once more to admit the University of Oregon and the University of Washington, with all four schools joining the Conference on August 2, 2024.Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are all members of the Association of American Universities, an organization of American research institutions devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. 14 Big Ten Student-Athletes Named Women's At-Large Academic All-Americans

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients on Wednesday, recognizing two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten member institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program. These honorees will be awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements. This year’s recipients, who represent 15 different sports, will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines. Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarships. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average (GPA), demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program. The Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student’s postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. To retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection. Big Ten Conference Announces 2024 Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference is celebrating its 110th class of recipients who earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor from their respective institutions during the 2023-24 academic year. Established in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference’s most prestigious award. It was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics. The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their collegiate career. This year’s class comprised student-athletes from 17 sports. Big Ten schools currently feature more than 9,800 student-athletes, but only 28 earn the award on an annual basis. Since the Big Ten Medal of Honor was first presented more than a century ago, just over 1,650 student-athletes have earned this unique distinction. ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced the 2024 Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics postseason individual award recipients on Monday, as selected by the conference’s head coaches.Michigan’s Sierra Brooks was named Gymnast of the Year, while Penn State’s Kalea McElligott was voted for Freshman of the Year and Michigan State’s Mike Rowe was selected as the Coach of the Year.Brooks received her third consecutive gymnast of the year award after placing first on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise, while coming in second in the all-around.
