Eight Big Ten Programs Earn 2026 WCGA Regional Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference had eight programs named as recipients of the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) 2026 Regional Awards, recognizing the achievements and leadership in coaching, athletic performance and administration across the sport.

Michigan State assistant coaches Nicole Jones and Devin Wright were honored as the Central Region Assistant Coaches of the Year for the second year in a row. Jones picked up her fourth honor, while Wright earned her third. Iowa’s Jen Llewellyn was named North Central Region Head Coach of the Year, the second head coach in program history to receive the award and first since 2016. Minnesota assistants Mya Hooten, Kiki Parenteau and Sam Scherwinski were recognized as the North Central Region Assistant Coaches of the Year.

Rutgers head coach Anastasia Candia was tabbed as the Northeast Region Co-Head Coach of the Year, her second award in as many seasons. The Michigan trio of Scott Sherman, Cali Hager and Quest Hayden were selected as the Northeast Assistant Coaches of the Year, while Carly Bauman became the seventh Wolverine to earn Regional Gymnast of the Year laurels at least twice. Rutgers’ Monique Brown, Michigan’s Lisa Savoury and Penn State’s Sarah Higgins were named Northeast Region Co-Administrators of the Year.

Maryland assistant coaches JJ Ferreira, Erinn Dooley and Morgan Epps were the Southeast Region Assistant Coaches of the Year for the second time. UCLA’s Jordan Chiles and Janelle McDonald were recognized as the West Region’s Gymnast and Co-Head Coach of the Year, respectively. It was the second career award for each after taking home the honors in 2023.

Minnesota and UCLA Earn Trips to 2026 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Minnesota and UCLA will represent the Big Ten Conference in Fort Worth, Texas, after earning spots in the semifinals of the 2026 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships. The semifinals are slated for 4:30 p.m. ET and 9 p.m. ET on April 16 inside Dickies Arena and will air on ESPN2. The NCAA Finals on April 18 will be televised on ABC at 4 p.m. ET.

The fourth-seeded Bruins finished atop the podium in the Corvallis Regional with a score of 197.725, securing back-to-back trips to the semifinals. No. 13 Minnesota was right behind them in second place with a 197.625 for its first appearance in the semifinals since 2022.

The Big Ten has eight individual qualifiers competing in the NCAA Championships. Michigan’s Sophia Diaz and Carly Bauman will compete on uneven bars and balance beam, respectively, rotating Stanford. Michigan State will have three gymnasts in Nikki Smith (all-around), Sage Kellerman (vault, uneven bars) and Gabi Ortiz (floor exercise). Smith will rotate with LSU, while Kellerman and Ortiz will be with Georgia. Ohio State’s Tory Vetter will take part in the all-around and Cameron Smith will compete on vault. Vetter will join Florida’s rotation and Smith will be with Stanford. Iowa’s Aurélie Tran is rotating with Minnesota as she competes on uneven bars.

The Big Ten is back in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships for the second straight year after UCLA and Michigan State advanced last season. Minnesota and UCLA are joining Oklahoma and Arkansas in the second semifinal on April 16.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference had 11 women’s gymnasts named to the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association’s (WCGA) All-America teams for the 2026 regular season.

The WCGA utilizes National Qualifying Scores (NQS) to determine the members of the first and second teams. First team accolades are given to the top eight finishers, plus ties, of the NCAA regular season on all four events and the all-around. Second team honors are awarded to the ninth through 16th place finishers, plus ties.

Big Ten Ties Record with 11 Programs Headed to 2026 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Regionals

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference will send representatives from all 12 of its women’s gymnastics programs to the regional round of the 2026 NCAA Championships, with those regionals taking place April 1-5 at four campus sites around the country.

For the second year in a row, the Big Ten had 11 institutions earn spots in the team competition, while gymnasts from Illinois, Nebraska, Rutgers and Washington will participate in individual events.

Four Big Ten programs garnered national seeds with Big Ten Champion UCLA (4th), Michigan (10th), Michigan State (11th) and Minnesota (13th).

Maryland, Ohio State and Rutgers will compete in the Lexington Regional. The Terrapins will open action in the first session of the second round on April 3 at 1 p.m. ET. The Buckeyes will participate in the evening session of the second round on April 3 at 7 p.m. ET. The Scarlet Knights will take part in a “play-in” dual meet against Central Michigan on April 2 at 2 p.m. ET to determine the final participant in the eight-team regional competition. With a win, Rutgers would advance to join Ohio State in the evening session on April 3.

The Corvallis Regional has the potential to host a Big Ten quad meet in the evening session of the second round. Washington will challenge San Jose State in a “play-in” dual meet on April 2 at 5 p.m. ET for the opportunity to join UCLA, Minnesota and Iowa in the second round on April 3 at 10 p.m. ET.

Nebraska and Michigan are headed to the Baton Rouge Regional. The Huskers will face Air Force on April 1 at 3 p.m. ET in a “play-in” dual meet as they look to earn a spot in the evening session of the second round on April 2 at 8 p.m. ET. The Wolverines are slated to begin their quest on April 2 at 2 p.m. ET in the second round’s first session.

Michigan State and Penn State will be featured in the Tempe Regional. The Spartans will compete in the first session of the second round on April 2 at 4 p.m. ET, followed by the Nittany Lions in the second session at 10 p.m. ET.

ESPN+ will stream live coverage from all four NCAA regional sites, with coverage of every gymnast and apparatus.

The top two teams from each session in the second round will advance to the regional final. The top two teams from each regional final will receive an automatic berth to the national championship. In addition, the top all-around competitor and top event specialist on each event (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will advance to the national championship. Event specialist qualifiers will only compete in the events they qualified.

ESPN2 will air the national semifinals on April 16, with sessions slated for 4:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET. This year’s NCAA Finals on April 18 will be televised live on ABC at 4 p.m. ET for the sixth straight year.

Big Ten Announces 2026 Women’s Gymnastics Individual Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its 2026 women’s gymnastics individual awards as voted upon by the conference’s 12 head coaches on Monday.

UCLA’s Jordan Chiles was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, while Michigan’s Carly Bauman was selected as the Big Ten Event Specialist of the Year. Minnesota’s Arianna Ostrum was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and UCLA’s Janelle McDonald was tabbed as the Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Chiles captured the all-around crown at the 2026 Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships with a 39.825, the highest all-around score ever at the Big Ten Championships. It was her 11th all-around title of the season as she became only the second gymnast in Big Ten history to tally at least a 39.800 at the event. The senior won balance beam outright with a 9.950 and scored a 10 on floor exercise for the second year in a row to take home the victory. Chiles, a first team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Championships Team honoree, set the single-season record for most Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors with 10 this year. She is the first Bruin in program history to win gymnast of the year.

Bauman, who earned a spot on the all-championships team for her second-place finish on floor exercise (9.950), is the first Wolverine to be recognized as the Big Ten Event Specialist of the Year. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native was a first team All-Big Ten performer and was twice selected as the Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week this season.

Ostrum is the fourth Minnesota gymnast to be honored as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and first since 2018. She was the Big Ten Co-Champion on vault with a score of 9.950 and picked up all-championships team laurels for her performances on vault, floor exercise and all-around. Ostrum was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times this year, was an All-Big Ten first teamer and claimed all-freshman team placement.

For the second straight season, McDonald garnered coach of the year distinction after UCLA repeated as the Big Ten’s regular season and conference champions. The Bruins once again had a spotless 9-0 record in league meets and have not lost to a Big Ten opponent in non-conference or postseason action since joining the conference. UCLA was just the fifth team in Big Ten Championships history to surpass 198 with a team score of 198.100 and had three gymnasts win individual titles – Jordan Chiles (all-around, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise), Riley Jenkins (vault) and Sydney Barros (uneven bars). Under McDonald’s guidance, four Bruins earned All-Big Ten honors in 2026 with Chiles, Ashlee Sullivan and Tiana Sumanasekera on the first team and Ciena Alipio on the second team. UCLA was the only school with multiple all-freshman team selections in Sullivan and Sumanasekera.

UCLA Wins 2026 Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – With an overall score of 198.100, UCLA clinched its second Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships title on Saturday night inside State Farm Arena in Champaign, Ill. The team’s 198.100 is just the fifth score above 198 in the history of the Big Ten Championships. The Bruins also secured the 2026 regular-season crown for the second year in a row.

Michigan State placed second at this year’s competition with a 197.475, while Minnesota earned a spot on the podium with 196.900 points. Michigan finished fourth behind a 196.800, followed by Iowa in fifth (196.700). Ohio State captured sixth place (196.250), Penn State checked in seventh (196.000), Rutgers earned eighth (195.700) and Washington had a ninth-place finish (195.475). Maryland (195.300), Illinois (195.125) and Nebraska (195.075) rounded out the field in 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively.

UCLA’s Jordan Chiles captured the all-around crown with a 39.825, the highest all-around score ever at the Big Ten Championships. She is only the second gymnast in Big Ten history to tally at least a 39.800, joining Michigan’s Elise Ray (2004).

Minnesota’s Arianna Ostrum and UCLA’s Riley Jenkins were co-champions on vault with a pair of 9.950s. Jenkins is the first Big Ten Champion on vault for the Bruins.

It was a six-way tie for first place on uneven bars as Chiles, Iowa’s Aurélie Tran, UCLA’s Sydney Barros, Michigan State’s Sage Kellerman and Minnesota’s Jordyn Lyden and Emma Slevin all posted a 9.950.

Chiles won balance beam outright with a score of 9.950. For the second year in a row, she recorded a 10 to take home the floor exercise crown, the fifth perfect score on the apparatus in the history of the Big Ten Championships.

A total of 20 gymnasts earned a place on the Big Ten All-Championships Team by virtue of their performances at the two-day meet.

The 44th Big Ten Women's Gymnastics Championships presented by Allstate will be held March 20-21 at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill., at State Farm Center. The meet will be conducted in three sessions, with four schools competing in the evening session on March 20, four schools competing in the afternoon session on March 21 and four schools competing in the evening session on March 21. Team seeding is determined by the final Big Ten regular season standings. In the event of a tie, head-to-head results shall be used. If there is still a tie, team NQS following the Big Four meets shall be used.

Big Ten Recognizes Winter Academic All-Big Ten Honorees

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 1,127 students on winter sports rosters who have been named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team Wednesday.

The list of honorees includes 83 men’s and 119 women’s basketball students, 98 men’s ice hockey students, 59 men’s and 146 women’s gymnastics students, 154 men’s and 251 women’s swim and dive students, and 217 wrestling students.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team (as verified by being on the official squad list as of March 1 for fall sports), have been enrolled full time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

2026 Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics All-Conference Teams Announced

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its 2026 women’s gymnastics all-conference teams on Wednesday. The All-Big Ten and All-Freshman Teams were determined based on the national qualifying scores (NQS) accumulated by student-athletes during the 2026 season.

Every women’s gymnastics program was represented on this year’s all-conference teams. Michigan led the way with five All-Big Ten selections, placing two on the first team and three on the second team. Regular-season champion UCLA and Michigan State each had three gymnasts on the first team and one on the second team. Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers also had at least one gymnast on the first team.

An additional 15 gymnasts were named to the All-Big Ten Second Team. Five programs were featured on the six-person all-freshman team, paced by UCLA with a pair of representatives.

The Big Ten also recognized 12 Sportsmanship Award recipients in the sport of women’s gymnastics, one from each conference institution. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

The 2026 Big Ten Women's Gymnastics Championships presented by Allstate will be held March 20-21 at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign, Ill. The meet will be conducted in three sessions, with Illinois, Nebraska, Rutgers and Washington competing on March 20 at 6 p.m. CT. Iowa, Maryland, Ohio State and Penn State will compete in the afternoon session at 12 p.m. CT on March 21, while Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and UCLA will compete in the evening session at 5 p.m. CT. All three sessions of the 2026 Big Ten Women's Gymnastics Championships will be televised live to a national audience on the Big Ten Network. Sessions can also be seen live on the FOX Sports app.
