Big Ten Network Presents 2026 Spring Championships

The Big Ten Network today announced its 2026 Big Ten Spring Championships schedule, broadcasting the tournaments and championships for men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, rowing, softball and baseball. Additionally, coverage of the MPSF beach volleyball and men’s volleyball tournaments will be presented across BTN and B1G+.

Coverage of the spring championships begins with the men’s and women’s tennis championships airing live on B1G+, April 22-26. Coverage of the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Championships from Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif., begins Wednesday, April 22, and concludes with the championship on Saturday, April 25. The Big Ten Women’s Tennis Championships Presented by Allstate kicks off on Thursday, April 23, and wraps up with the championship match on Sunday, April 26.

From April 22-24, B1G+ presents coverage of the MPSF Beach Volleyball Championship Tournament from Huntington Beach, Calif., and the MPSF Men’s Volleyball Championship Tournament from Provo, Utah. The semifinals and championship of the beach volleyball tournament will be televised on BTN on Friday, April 24, at 11 a.m. ET and 1 p.m. ET, anchored by Camryn Irwin and Holly McPeak. The championship match of the men’s volleyball tournament is scheduled to air on BTN on Saturday, April 25, at 9 p.m. ET with coverage from Kevin Barnett and Rich Lambourne.

The quarterfinals of the Big Ten Women’s Lacrosse Tournament Presented by Allstate will stream live on B1G+, Wednesday, April 22. BTN’s coverage of the tournament, hosted by Michigan, includes the semifinals Friday, April 24, at 3 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. ET. The championship game will air live on BTN on Sunday, April 26, at noon ET. Dean Linke and Taylor Cummings will anchor the semifinals and championship game for Big Ten Network.

Coverage of the Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament begins with the quarterfinals on B1G+, Saturday, April 25. The semifinals of the tournament, hosted by Rutgers, air live on Big Ten Network on Thursday, April 30, at 3 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. ET. The championship game for the men’s tournament is scheduled to air live on BTN at noon ET on Saturday, May 2. Joe Beninati and Mark Dixon are scheduled to be on the call for the semifinals and championship game on BTN, while Mitchell Pehlke will join the duo for the championship to report from the sidelines.

Fans can purchase a 2026 B1G Spring Championships Pass on B1G+ for a one-time payment of $9.99 through Sunday, April 26 to access live streams and on-demand replays from the men’s and women’s tennis championships, the men’s and women’s lacrosse quarterfinals and the MPSF beach and men’s volleyball tournaments.

Championship coverage continues with the Big Ten Women’s Golf Championship Presented by Allstate from the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, Calif. For the second consecutive year, three hours of live coverage from the final round will be televised on the Big Ten Network on Sunday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Additionally, for the second year in a row, BTN will air three hours of live coverage from the championship round of the Big Ten Men’s Golf Championship from the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore., on Sunday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. ET. Rick Pizzo, Erik Ciotti and Emma Carpenter will anchor both golf championships broadcasts on BTN.

BTN’s coverage of the full Big Ten Softball Tournament Presented by Allstate from College Park, Md. begins Wednesday, May 6, at 11 a.m. ET, and concludes with the championship game Saturday, May 9, at 4 p.m. ET. Lisa Byington, Jennie Ritter and Sydney Supple will provide on-air coverage of the championship game.

The Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships from Nebraska will stream live on B1G+ and RunnerSpace+ from Friday, May 15, through Sunday, May 17. Four hours of live coverage from the final day of track events, May 17, will air live on BTN at 1:30 p.m. ET.

The first day of the Big Ten Rowing Championship Presented by Allstate from the Indianapolis Rowing Center will stream on B1G+ on Saturday, May 16. Three hours of coverage from the final day will be televised live on BTN on Sunday, May 17, at 9 a.m. ET, anchored by Dean Linke, Grace Latz, Mandi Kowal, and Caroline Hendershot.

Big Ten Network will broadcast the entire Big Ten Baseball Tournament Presented by IFS.ai from Omaha, Neb., beginning Tuesday, May 19, at 10 a.m. ET, and concluding with the championship game Sunday, May 24, at 3 p.m. ET. Throughout the tournament, Connor Onion and Jack Kizer will be responsible for play-by-play duties, while Scott Pose, Danan Hughes and Jeff Leise will serve as analysts.

Big Ten Receives 2026 NCAA/MOAA Opportunities & Impact Award

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- The Big Ten Conference has been named the Division I winner of the 2026 NCAA/MOAA Opportunities and Impact Award, the NCAA and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association — an affiliate of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics — announced Thursday.

The award recognizes and celebrates the initiatives, programs and efforts of athletics departments and conference offices in Divisions I, II and III that embrace environments of belonging and well-being and elevate the student-athlete voice in intercollegiate athletics communities. NCAA and MOAA representatives will present the awards June 7-10 in Las Vegas during the MOAA Symposium.

"We're proud to accept this honor on behalf of our 18 schools, whose support makes these initiatives possible," Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti said.

Omar Brown, Big Ten senior vice president for community and impact, added, "This humbling recognition is a direct result of the leadership and alignment we have from Commissioner Petitti, throughout the conference office, and in collaboration with our campuses. Big Ten student-athletes always are aiming for excellence in competition, in the classroom and in their communities. We will continue to build on this foundation to create transformational opportunities for their development and deliver impact to the many locales we call home across the nation throughout the year."

The Big Ten Conference continues to engage, educate and empower its student-athletes, coaches, administrators and its broader community base with programs, initiatives and engagements that make a difference and encourage positive change. For four years, student-athletes from Big Ten schools have traveled to Alabama for an immersive journey that included learning about the Civil Rights Movement, visits to historic sites, community service projects and panel sessions with local leaders. The Big Ten has also added new elements to the transformative experience each year to deepen understanding and inspire civic responsibility.

Additionally, the conference creates leadership opportunities for its student-athletes. It partners with James Russell Lowell Elementary School in Indianapolis, connecting its 18 member schools with classrooms that include mentorship and encouragement via virtual meetings.

Another one of its many initiatives are structured conversations with administrators, coaches, athletes and employees to gather feedback and to inform future strategies. Examples include conducting student-athlete experience exit surveys and hosting standing committees, commissions and leadership councils to discuss progress, share feedback and assess strategic alignment. The conference also hosts numerous inclusive programs such as United as One, the B1G Fellows Program, the Student-Athlete Issues Commission, The Women's Volleyball Mentorship Program and the CBS Sports Ambassador Program & Sports Journalism Initiative. The conference also promotes several awards programs, which includes the Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award to recognize student-athletes who demonstrate leadership, service and volunteerism.

Along with the Big Ten, Saint Michael's College athletics department was recognized in Division II, and Occidental College's athletics department was the Division III honoree.

Discover, Big Ten Present Custom Jackets To Jackie Robinson Award Honorees

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Presenting sponsor Discover will deliver custom letterwinner jackets to all 36 institutional winners of the 2025-26 Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award, the Big Ten announced Wednesday. Each university’s male and female honoree will receive a customized, one-of-one gift featuring unique school elements and visuals.

The first two custom jackets were presented in December at the Discover Big Ten Football Championship Game to 2025 national winners Dillon Fontus, from Maryland football, and Iowa wrestler Nanea Estrella.

Both of last year’s winners, and Sonya Pankey Robinson (Jackie Robinson’s granddaughter), attended the game as guests of Discover, seeing Indiana claim the title at Lucas Oil Stadium on their way to a perfect 16-0 campaign and CFP National Championship. The 2026 national winners will be announced later this spring from the cohort of 36 campus recipients.

In November, the Big Ten Conference announced the 36 student-athletes selected as institutional winners of the 2025-26 Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award presented by Discover. Now in its second year, the honor was created to recognize Big Ten student-athletes who strive to have a positive impact within their community in addition to excellence in competition.

Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Beyond his athletic prowess, he continues to be recognized and honored for his contributions off the field: integrating Major League Baseball and his lifelong commitment to social justice. He is the embodiment of the Big Ten's mission to develop strong student leaders, and this program honors his legacy and core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. As Jackie famously said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

The Big Ten Conference’s commitment to athletics, academics and service goes back to the conference’s founding. Coupling the academic goals set forth by leaders of the charter members of the conference with their steadfast commitment to athletics, the conference instituted the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1915, the first award to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on intercollegiate athletics. ROSEMONT, Ill. – Big Ten universities’ leading role in educating students and driving economic prosperity is featured the latest edition in the “We Are Here” series of :30 ads .

The new ad began airing during Big Ten basketball games and other winter sports in January. Students and alumni take center stage, sharing with viewers what their lives look like and what they have been able to accomplish thanks to their Big Ten university education. Seen on campuses and in communities nationwide, their experiences are living proof of the world-class educational opportunities they received, from learning alongside Nobel Prize–winning faculty to participating in internships and undergraduate research. The spot also highlights the universities’ broader impact through innovation, job creation and service.

Together, the 18 members of the Big Ten Conference are educating more than 810,000 students, preparing them for successful lives and careers. The Big Ten’s collective graduation rate is more than 20 points above the national average and the universities have more than 9.2 million living alumni.

The first ad in the “We Are Here” series began airing last fall and has generated more than 250 million impressions across Big Ten broadcasts to date, including during the College Football Playoff National Championship won by Indiana University. As with the first ad, the second spot was developed by a creative team made up of staff from Big Ten member universities under the auspices of the Big Ten Academic Alliance. It is the second in a planned series of three ads, which over the course of the series will feature footage from all 18 universities.

CRCA Tabs Seven Big Ten Programs in Preseason Poll

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Seven teams from the Big Ten Conference were included in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) 2026 Preseason Poll, the organization announced Wednesday.

Washington was ranked fourth to lead the Big Ten contingent, followed by No. 9 Rutgers, No. 11 Michigan, No. 14 Indiana, No. 19 Ohio State, No. 20 Michigan State and No. 23 USC. Washington, Rutgers, Michigan and Indiana participated in the 2025 NCAA Rowing Championships a season ago. The Huskies took home silver in the II Eights and Fours.

The Huskies earned their first title as a member of the Big Ten Conference by winning the 2025 Big Ten Rowing Championships. Washington swept the competition with first-place finishes in each of the Grand Finals and totaled a record-setting 264 points to beat out Rutgers and Michigan. The Huskies were just the second program to win every race at the Big Ten Championships, joining Ohio State’s 2018 squad, and had three boats set championships records.

Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission Calls for Limitations or Ban of Individual Prop Betting on College Athletics

ROSEMONT, Ill. — [February, 10, 2026] — The Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission (SAIC) today sent a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker urging the NCAA to continue pushing for limitations or the outright elimination of proposition (“prop”) betting involving individual student-athletes competing in college athletics. The letter reinforces the Big Ten Conference’s unwavering commitment to protecting the well-being and safety of student-athletes across all 18 Big Ten campuses, and the integrity of intercollegiate athletics.

“The Big Ten Conference is proud to support our student-athletes in calling for the restriction or elimination of individual proposition wagers on college athletics,” said Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti. "The Big Ten Conference appreciates the NCAA’s effort to eliminate these wagers and will continue to assist student-athletes as they deal with the challenges that result from proposition bets in college sports.”

President Baker recently sent letters to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and to State Gambling Commissions calling for amended state laws and regulations to better-protect student-athletes.

The letter from the Big Ten Conference SAIC outlines the growing concerns around the rise of individual performance prop wagering in college sports, including:

Increased harassment student-athletes experience because of wagers on individual-performance proposition wagers
Negative impact individual-performance proposition betting has on student-athletes’ mental health
Accusations of impropriety, even when unfounded, damage the student-athlete experience
Potentially jeopardizing the integrity of athletic competition

“While we understand that sports betting is becoming increasingly more common across the country and allows for states to generate increased tax revenue, prop betting represents unique risks at the college level,” the Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission wrote. “We believe protecting student-athletes must be a priority. Limiting or eliminating prop betting on college athletics would be a meaningful step toward reducing harassment, protecting mental well-being, and preserving the integrity of college competition.”

The Big Ten Conference SAIC was founded in 1994. SAIC members take an active role in monthly meetings discussing the issues most important to Big Ten Conference student-athletes and highlighting ongoing initiatives on their respective campuses. SAIC executive leadership members also represent Big Ten student-athletes in front of the Conference’s Joint Group council and represent the Big Ten Conference on the NCAA’s Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where they review NCAA activities, proposed legislation and offer feedback on behalf of the Big Ten’s student-athletes. Student-athletes are nominated by their institution and appointed by the Conference’s Joint Group Executive Committee to serve on the commission for one academic year.

Dillan Fontus of Maryland Football and Nanea Estrella, a member of the Iowa Women's Wrestling team, were named the inaugural national winners last spring. Both will be hosted in Indianapolis next month and recognized on the field during the 2025 Discover Big Ten Football Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday, December 6 (8pm ET; FOX).

Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Beyond his athletic prowess, he continues to be recognized and honored for his contributions off the field: integrating Major League Baseball and his lifelong commitment to social justice. He is the embodiment of the Big Ten's mission to develop strong student leaders, and we honor his legacy and core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. The Big Ten and Allstate Unveil New Partnership to Elevate Women’s Sports

CHICAGO, Ill. – Allstate, the Big Ten Conference and Big Ten Network (BTN) today announced the creation of the Allstate Big Ten Women’s Championship Series, a new competition designed to spotlight and celebrate excellence in women’s athletics across the conference. The championship series is part of a first-of-its kind, multi-year partnership that establishes Allstate as the Official Insurance Partner of the Big Ten Conference and reflects Allstate’s 20-year legacy of supporting college athletics.

With the partnership:

The Allstate Big Ten Women’s Championship Series will be created. This year-long competition among Big Ten schools is designed to highlight excellence across women’s athletics, with schools earning points based on their teams’ performance in regular and postseason play. At the end of the academic year, the school with the highest point total will be recognized as the overall champion.
Allstate becomes the title sponsor of the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament, taking place March 4-8 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

New Era Begins As House Settlement Approved

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 6, 2025 – Today marks a historic milestone for college athletics in the United States. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has granted final approval to a settlement in the House v. NCAA (“House”) litigation. This landmark settlement – agreed to by plaintiffs representing nearly 400,000 current and former student-athletes and the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference (SEC) – will reshape the landscape of college sports, paving the way for a model that prioritizes fairness, stability, integrity and opportunity for student-athletes and institutions.

Overseeing this model will be the newly established College Sports Commission – an independent body that will be responsible for implementing the settlement terms governing revenue sharing, student-athlete Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals and roster limits. The Commission will investigate any potential violations of these rules, make determinations regarding potential rules violations and penalties, provide notice and opportunity to be heard, participate in the arbitration process and ultimately administer penalties for violations of these rules. The Commission’s leadership team will be announced in the near future.

Under the new system, student-athletes will have more opportunities to financially benefit during their participation in intercollegiate athletics than ever before. Institutions are now able to share revenue directly with student-athletes, in addition to providing existing benefits such as athletic scholarships, access to world-class training facilities, academic counseling, medical care, post-eligibility medical coverage, mental health resources, nutritional guidance and life skills development.

Beginning July 1, 2025, each year, participating schools can distribute up to 22% of the average revenue among schools in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC from media rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships – known as the revenue sharing cap. The cap is estimated at $20.5 million per school for the 2025-26 academic year, pending final confirmation. To ensure revenue sharing with student-athletes is appropriately managed and reported to the Court for compliance, athletics departments will use the new College Athlete Payment System (CAPS) platform developed by LBi Software.

Student-athletes will also be able to continue receiving compensation from third-parties other than their institutions for the use of their NIL, so long as their NIL deals are made with the purpose of using their NIL for a valid business purpose and do not exceed a reasonable range of compensation. On behalf of the College Sports Commission, Deloitte* has built and will maintain a new technology platform called NIL Go in which student-athletes will be required to report their NIL deals to confirm they are in compliance with the rules. Deals will be evaluated based on:

Payor association – The relationship between the payor and the student-athlete’s school.
Valid business purpose – Whether the payor is seeking the use of the student-athlete’s NIL for a valid business purpose, meaning to sell a good or service to the public for profit.
Range of compensation – Whether the compensation paid to the student-athlete is commensurate with compensation paid to similarly situated individuals.

Finally, for participating schools, NCAA scholarship limits have been removed and roster limits have been established for each sport, allowing for a significant increase in scholarship opportunities for student-athletes. Under this new model, schools will have the option to offer partial or full scholarships to every student-athlete on a team’s roster, as long as the total number of student-athletes stays within the sport’s specific roster limit. Efforts have also been made to ensure current and immediately incoming student-athletes are not adversely impacted by the establishing of roster limits. Removing scholarship limits allows schools to better support their student-athletes through new scholarships, particularly in non-revenue-generating sports.

“We look forward to implementing this historic settlement designed to bring stability, integrity and competitive balance to college athletics while increasing both scholarship and revenue opportunities for student-athletes in all sports,” said Tony Petitti, Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference.

Following are significant dates related to the implementation of the settlement:

June 6, 2025: Settlement approved; settlement-related NCAA rules are effective, as adopted by the NCAA Division 1 Board on April 21, 2025.
June 11 2025: NIL Go portal launches.
June 15, 2025: Opt-in deadline for non-defendant schools to fully commit to revenue sharing.
July 6, 2025: Opt-in schools must “designate” student-athletes permitted by the settlement to remain above roster limits.
July 1, 2025: First date for direct institutional revenue sharing payments to student-athletes.
Start of 2025-26 academic year: With the exception of the “designated” student-athletes, Fall sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition.
December 1, 2025: With the exception of “designated” student-athletes, Winter and Spring sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition or Dec. 1, whichever is earlier.

2025 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP

Four Big Ten teams are competing in the 2025 NCAA Division I Rowing Championship, beginning Friday, May 30. Washington earned the conference’s automatic qualification after sweeping the Big Ten Championships, while Indiana, Michigan and Rutgers were at-large selections for the 22-team regatta. It is the 14th time in the last 15 seasons that at least four conference teams have been selected for the NCAA Championship.

The 2025 NCAA Championship will be held May 30-June 1 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. and will be covered live on NCAA.com.

Teams participating in the NCAA Championship are required to field two boats of eight rowers (I Eights and II Eights) and one boat of four rowers (Fours), with all 22 boats being seeded into four heats.

Washington continues its streak with its 28th appearance, having competed in every championship regatta in the NCAA’s history of the event. The Huskies, who last won a national championship in 2019, are seeking their sixth title and have earned the No. 4 seed in the I Eights and the No. 2 seed in both the II Eights and Fours.

Indiana is making its ninth appearance in the championship regatta after collecting fourth place at Sunday’s Big Ten Championships. Looking for the program’s first top-10 finish, the Hoosiers are ranked No. 10 in the I Eights and No. 17 in the II Eights, while checking in at No. 16 in the Fours.

Michigan finished third at the Big Ten Championships and is on its 17th straight postseason trip. The Wolverines are seeded eighth in the I Eights, 14th in the II Eights and ninth in the Fours this year. Michigan had its best NCAA finish at Mercer Lake with a second-place showing in 2012.

Rutgers earned its sixth consecutive berth into the national regatta after coming in second at the Big Ten Championships, its highest placement in program history. The Scarlet Knights have been seeded at No. 6 in the I Eights, No. 9 in the II Eights and No. 6 in the Fours for the NCAA competition.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference revealed its 2025 rowing individual awards, as selected through a vote of the conference’s 11 head coaches. Washington junior Aisha Rocek was chosen as the Big Ten Athlete of the Year, while Rutgers’ Beatrice Colclough was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Rutgers head coach Justin Price was tabbed as the Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Rocek, hailing from Como, Italy, is the first rower from Washington to earn an individual award after the program embarked on its inaugural season as a member of the Big Ten. The first team All-Big Ten performer helped pace the Huskies to a gold medal in the I Eights and a team title at the 2025 Big Ten Rowing Championships. Rocek returned to collegiate racing this year after representing Italy at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Colclough is just the second Scarlet Knight to collect Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, joining Hannah Heideveld (2021). The Staffordshire, England, native was a member of the II Eights that earned a silver medal at the conference championships. She also secured a spot on the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team.

Price, who took over at the helm in 2018, is the first Rutgers head coach to be named Big Ten Coach of the Year. Price coached the Scarlet Knights to a second-place finish behind 239 points at last week’s Big Ten Championships, the highest placement in program history. Under his guidance, Rutgers is headed back to the NCAA Championship regatta for the sixth time in a row. The Scarlet Knights are seeded at No. 9 in the II Eights and at No. 6 in both the I Eights and Fours.

A new addition to the postseason honors this year is the all-freshman team. The team is made up of eight rowers and one coxswain as selected by the conference’s head coaches.

The conference announced this year’s All-Big Ten Teams and Sportsmanship Award honorees at the conclusion of the 2025 Big Ten Rowing Championships last Sunday.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four Big Ten teams have been selected to participate in the 2025 NCAA Rowing Championship, the organization announced Tuesday. Washington earned the conference’s automatic qualification after sweeping the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, while Indiana, Michigan and Rutgers were at-large selections for the 22-team regatta. The championship will be held May 30-June 1 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. and will be covered live on NCAA.com.

For the third year in a row, the Big Ten earned four bids, the most since five teams competed in the 2019 NCAA Championship.

INDIANAPOLIS – Washington earned its first title as a member of the Big Ten Conference by winning the 2025 Big Ten Rowing Championships on Sunday. The Huskies swept the competition with first-place finishes in each of the Grand Finals at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis. It was also the first time the Big Ten Rowing Championships were aired live on the Big Ten Network.

Washington totaled a record-setting 264 points to beat out Rutgers (239 points) and Michigan (212 points). The Huskies are just the second program to win every race at the Big Ten Championships, joining Ohio State (2018).

Washington had three boats set championships records. The III Fours finished in 7:03.150 and the II Fours earned a record of their own with a winning time of 6:58.341. The I Fours clocked a time of 6:53.520 to round things out.

With Sunday’s win, Washington earns the conference’s automatic berth to the 2025 NCAA Rowing Championships, which will take place May 30-June 1 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The full field of this year’s NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday, May 20 at 5 p.m. ET via a streamed selection show at NCAA.com.

The Big Ten Conference Announces Inaugural “Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award” for Student-Athletes

ROSEMONT, Ill – In honor of Jackie Robinson’s core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence, the Big Ten Conference today announced the inaugural Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award to recognize the conference’s student-athletes who have made an exceptional impact in their local community. Before breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier, Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball.

Student-athletes will be nominated based on the following criteria:

Demonstrated Impact: Significant and tangible contributions to community projects or causes, including measurable outcomes or positive changes resulting from their involvement.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with others, including peers, organizations, and community members, to achieve common goals and enhance community impact.
Consistency and Commitment: Ongoing and consistent participation in community service activities over an extended period of time.
Visibility and Advocacy: Efforts to raise awareness and advocate for important groups or causes, leveraging their platform to promote positive change and engage others.

"The Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award celebrates Jackie’s legacy of excellence in community service,” said Sonya Pankey Robinson, Jackie’s first grandchild, Director and board member of the Jackie Robinson Foundation. "We are proud to recognize 36 outstanding men and women for the incredible impact they make in their community."

“It is our privilege and great honor to bestow this award in Jackie’s name upon these deserving Big Ten student-athletes and to express our appreciation for the continuing support of the Jackie Robinson Foundation,” said Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti.

"Our student-athletes make significant contributions through competition, academics, and community impact,” said Big Ten Senior Vice President, Community & Impact, Omar Brown. “This award allows the Big Ten to recognize these efforts in improving communities, just as we do with their other achievements. Jackie Robinson embodies this award and our goal to honor student-athletes who positively impact others."

Each Big Ten member-institution can nominate two student-athletes, one male and one female, from their respective schools. The Big Ten Conference will select two Jackie Robinson Community & Impact award winners, from the 36 nominations, who will be announced by the Big Ten Conference this spring. All remaining nominees will be recognized with individual awards for their contributions to their local communities.

In June of 2020 the conference launched the Big Ten Equality Coalition. This group, which features student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, chancellors, presidents and other members, has a stated goal of seeking tangible ways to actively and constructively combat racism and hate around the world, while also empowering student-athletes to express their rights to free speech and peaceful protest. An important initiative resulting from conversations initiated by the coalition was the Big Ten Voter Registration Initiative.

In recent years, several delegations of conference student-athletes and administrators have traveled to Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, for an immersive civil rights educational experience entitled: “Big Life Series: Selma to Montgomery.” The visit to one of the key centers of the civil rights movement was highlighted by marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to learn more about the profound impact that young people had on the civil rights movement.

Additionally, the Big Ten Conference is dedicated to making a lasting impact on the communities where its major events are held hosting sports clinics, renovating recreation centers, and giving elementary-aged children a behind-the-scenes experience with major Big Ten events. In all cases the conference focuses on creating meaningful improvements aimed at leaving each location better than it was found. Most recently, the Big Ten collaborated with the College Football Playoff Foundation, local sports organizations and local school districts to enhance spaces for teachers and children while providing additional educational and athletic opportunities for children.

University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and University of Washington Officially Join Big Ten Conference

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference today officially admitted the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington, bringing the total number of member institutions to 18. Competition will begin this season for all conference sports.

“We are excited today to officially welcome the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington to the Big Ten Conference,” said Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. “All four institutions feature a combination of world class academics and athletics that are a great fit for our conference, and we look forward to building long-lasting relationships with the administrators, coaches, student-athletes, alumni and fans.”

On June 30, 2022, the Big Ten’s Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) voted unanimously to admit the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC). A little more than a year later, on August 4, 2023, the COP/C voted unanimously once more to admit the University of Oregon and the University of Washington, with all four schools joining the Conference on August 2, 2024.

Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are all members of the Association of American Universities, an organization of American research institutions devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. Today, they also become members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, where Big Ten institutions lead the nation with more than 75,000 instructional staff, 810,000 students, $17.4 billion in annual research expenditures, and 145 million library volumes, representing 25 percent of all print titles in North America. Collaboration through the Big Ten Academic Alliance allows the universities to work more effectively and efficiently by, among other things, sharing a high-speed fiber optic network, offering an array of leadership development programs, building shared infrastructure, and seamlessly sharing library resources.

Athletically, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington have won a combined 302 NCAA team championships and have 49 Olympians on Team USA at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. On the football field, they’ve combined for 10 Heisman Trophies, 73 College Football Hall of Famers, 41 Rose Bowl championships and 173 First Round NFL draft picks, including six this year.

The University of Oregon is a Carnegie R1 research university and a member of the Association of American Universities. The Oregon faculty includes a Nobel Prize winner, a MacArthur fellow, a pair of National Medal of Science winners and a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. Sponsoring 23 sports, USC has a long tradition of successful Olympic athletes, boasting more Olympians, medalists and gold medalists than any school in the country. Entering 2024-25, the Trojan teams have won 113 national championships.

Washington receives more federal research dollars than any other U.S. public university and has been home to seven Nobel Prize winners. In athletics, the Huskies 650 student-athletes compete in 22 sports and have won national championships in football, women’s cross country, men’s rowing, women’s rowing, softball, women’s volleyball and women’s golf. Big Ten Conference Announces 2024 Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients on Wednesday, recognizing two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten member institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program. These honorees will be awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements.

This year’s recipients, who represent 15 different sports, will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines. Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarships. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average (GPA), demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.

The Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student’s postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. To retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four former student-athletes from the University of Wisconsin are headed to Paris to represent the United States at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Lauren O’Connor and Grace Joyce are both first-time Olympians and will compete together in the women’s quadruple sculls. The duo helped their crew qualify after edging out Ukraine at the 2024 World Rowing Final Olympic & Paralympic Qualification Regatta.

O’Connor and Joyce join Sophia Vitas and two-time Olympian Madeleine Wanamaker to round out this year’s Big Ten contingent. Vitas is making her debut in the women’s double sculls, while Wanamaker, who finished seventh in the women’s four at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will race in the women’s eight.

The last time Wisconsin had four rowers compete in the same Olympics was at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain. The Badgers also had four women featured on the 1988 Olympic Team in Seoul, South Korea.

ROSEMONT, Ill. [June 12, 2024] — The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 2,271 students competing in spring sports who have been named to the Academic All-Big Ten team Wednesday.

The list of honorees includes 174 baseball students, 80 men’s golf students, 72 women’s golf students, 181 men’s lacrosse students, 183 women’s lacrosse students, 310 women’s rowing students, 189 softball students, 56 men’s tennis students, 76 women’s tennis students, 291 men’s track and field students, 382 women’s track and field students, five bowling students, 74 fencing students, four pistol students, 17 rifle students, 18 women’s lightweight rowing students, 27 men’s rowing students, eight women’s synchronized swimming students, 18 men’s volleyball students, 57 women’s hockey students, 11 sand volleyball students, 31 women’s water polo students and seven women’s wrestling students.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team (as verified by being on the official squad list as of May 1 for spring sports), have been enrolled full time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Four Big Ten teams are competing in the 2024 NCAA Division I Rowing Championship, beginning Friday, May 31. Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State and Rutgers earned berths into the national event, marking the 13th time in the last 14 seasons at least four conference teams have been selected for the NCAA Championship.

The 2024 NCAA Championship takes place May 31 through June 2 at Harsha Lake at East Fork State Park in Bethel, Ohio and will be covered live on NCAA.com.

The Wolverines were the conference’s automatic qualifier after winning their ninth Big Ten Championship. Michigan will make its 16th consecutive appearance and 25th overall in the regatta.

Indiana, Ohio State and Rutgers received at-large bids to the championship event. The Hoosiers are back for the second-straight year, while the Buckeyes are making their 24th consecutive appearance, having won national championships in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Scarlet Knights return to the championship regatta for the fifth year in a row.

The 10 automatic qualifiers and 12 at-large selections participating in the NCAA Championship are required to field two boats of eight rowers (I Eights and II Eights) and one boat of four rowers (Fours), with all 22 boats being seeded into four heats.

Big Ten Announces 2024 Rowing Individual Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference unveiled the recipients of its 2024 rowing individual awards, as selected through a vote of the conference’s eight head coaches. Michigan senior Zara Collisson was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year, while Indiana’s Nico Daly was chosen as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Indiana head coach Steve Peterson and Michigan head coach Mark Rothstein were tabbed as the Big Ten Co-Coaches of the Year.

Collisson, hailing from Sydney, Australia, is the 11th Michigan rower voted Big Ten Athlete of the Year and fifth in the last six years. A two-time first team All-Big Ten performer, she earned her second gold medal last weekend after leading the Wolverines to a title in the First Eights in a time of 6:17.85 at the Big Ten Championships.

Daly is just the second Hoosier to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, joining Alice Wright (2014). The Wellington, New Zealand, native helped Indiana to a second-place finish at last week’s Big Ten Championships, the highest finish in program history. Daly earned first team All-Big Ten recognition and won a silver medal with the First Eights.

Peterson repeats as Big Ten Coach of the Year after collecting his first honor in 2023. In his 21st season at Indiana, he led the Hoosiers to their best-ever medal count at the Big Ten Championships as the team totaled 144 points thanks to silver-medal performances from the First and Third Eights as well as bronze medals from the Second Fours and Eights. Peterson guided Indiana back to the NCAA Championship regatta for the second-straight season with an at-large bid and is ranked No. 12 in the I and II Eights, while checking in at No. 14 in the Fours.

Rothstein takes home Big Ten Coach of the Year laurels for the seventh time after coaching Michigan to its second consecutive Big Ten Championship title, its third in the last four years and ninth overall. With 33 years spent leading the program and 28 years as a Division I head coach, Rothstein directed Michigan to five gold medals and two silver-medal performances at the championships to score 189 out of 192 possible points, the third-highest team score in Big Ten Championship history. The Wolverines received the conference’s automatic qualifier and will be making their 16th-straight appearance in the NCAA Championship. Michigan is seeded No. 11 in the I Eights, No. 10 in the II Eights and No. 6 in the Fours heading into the NCAA regatta.

The conference announced this year’s All-Big Ten and Sportsmanship Award honorees at the conclusion of the 2024 Big Ten Rowing Championships last Sunday.

Michigan earned the conference’s automatic qualification after winning the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, while Indiana, Ohio State and Rutgers were at-large selections for the 22-team regatta. For the second year in a row, the Big Ten earned four bids, the most since five teams competed in the 2019 NCAA Championship. The Big Ten leads the way along with the Ivy League for the most of any conference to compete at this year’s event.

Michigan will make its 16th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and 25th overall after claiming its ninth Big Ten title. The Wolverines have placed in the top five in 11 of their previous 22 appearances, including three of the past six seasons, with a school-best runner-up finish in both 2001 and 2012. Michigan is seeded No. 11 in the I Eights, No. 10 in the II Eights and No. 6 in the Fours heading into the NCAA regatta.

Indiana is back in the NCAA Championship for the second-straight time and will be making its eighth championship regatta appearance after collecting a second-place finish at last week’s Big Ten Championship, a program record. Looking for the program’s first top-10 finish, the Hoosiers are ranked No. 12 in the I and II Eights, while checking in at No. 14 in the Fours.

Ohio State earned its 24th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, owning seven individual boat titles and 21 top-10 finishes as a team. The Buckeyes claimed three NCAA championships (2013, 2014, 2015) and placed second in 2016. Ohio State is the No. 13 seed in the I and II Eights and No. 9 seed in the Fours of this year’s NCAA finals.

Rutgers is headed into its fifth consecutive NCAA Championship, coming off a third-place showing at the Big Ten Championships last weekend, its highest finish at the conference regatta under head coach Justin Price. The Scarlet Knights have been seeded at No. 14 in the I Eights, No. 11 in the II Eights and No. 13 in the Fours for the NCAA competition.

Since the Big Ten first sponsored rowing as a conference sport in 2000, the conference has won three team NCAA titles (Ohio State’s crowns from 2013-15). Big Ten crews have won 10 individual NCAA championships since 2000 – Ohio State has seven of those titles with three in the I Eights (2014-16), two in the II Eights (2013-14) and two in the Fours (2012-13). The additional conference individual boat NCAA crowns belong to Michigan (2001, 2012) and Minnesota (2007) in the II Eights.

BARABOO, Wis. – Michigan won the 2024 Big Ten Conference Rowing Championships on Sunday after claiming first place in five races and finishing second in two others at Devil’s Lake State Park in Baraboo, Wis. It is the second consecutive title for the Wolverines after winning the championship in 2023 and their third in the last four years.

The Wolverines totaled 189 points to beat out Indiana (144 points) and Rutgers (137 points) to secure their ninth Big Ten title.

Michigan earned victories in the Four Eights (6:46.79) and Third Eights (6:42.43) to open the day. Rutgers won the Third Fours in a time of 7:15.35 and Ohio State took first place in the Second Fours with a time of 7:07.61. The Wolverines were back atop the podium in the First Fours in a time of 7:00.64 and the Second Eights (6:15.03).

The championship title came down to the final race of the day with the First Eights. Drama ensued during the entirety of the race, especially in the battle for first place. Michigan and Indiana were neck and neck over the 2,000-meter course, before the Wolverines edged out the victory in a time 6:17.85 to clinch the conference crown, just 1.02 seconds ahead of the Hoosiers. Michigan is the first 10-time First Eights champion in conference history.

The Big Ten Network will air its linear coverage of the 2024 Big Ten Rowing Championships on Sunday, May 26 at 10:30 a.m. ET.

With Sunday’s win, Michigan earns the conference’s automatic berth to the 2024 NCAA Championships, which will take place May 31– June 2 in Bethel, Ohio. The full field of this year’s NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday, May 21 at 5 p.m. ET via a streamed selection show at NCAA.com.
