Big Ten Announces Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships Honors

The Big Ten Conference announced the 2022 Big Ten Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships award winners on Wednesday, as selected by the conference’s head coaches. The championship meet was held last weekend at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Ohio State’s Tyler Johnson earned Men’s Track Athlete of the Championships accolades, while Nebraska’s Alex Talley was selected as Field Athlete of the Championships and Hawkeyes head coach Joey Woody was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Ohio State’s Anavia Battle was the unanimous choice as Women’s Track Athlete of the Championships, while teammate Adelaide Aquilla was selected as Field Athlete of the Championships and Gophers head coach Matt Bingle was tabbed the Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Johnson received his second consecutive Track Athlete of the Indoor Championships award after successfully defending his titles in the 200 meters (20.76) and 400 meters (45.31). Talley claimed the weight throw title with a winning throw of 22.02 meters and added a second-place finish in shot put (19.54 meters). He is the second consecutive Husker to take home the award following Burger Lambrechts Jr. last season. Woody earned his second straight Men’s Coach of the Year accolade after guiding the Hawkeyes to back-to-back indoor conference titles.

Battle claimed her second career Track Athlete of the Indoor Championships honor after also earning the award in 2020. She was victorious in the 60 meters (7.28) and 200 meters (22.39), setting a championships record in the 200 meters. Aquilla was named the Field Athlete of the Indoor Championships for the second straight year as she earned her third consecutive shot put title with a winning throw of 18.71 meters. Bingle garnered his third Women’s Coach of the Year honor and second in as many years after leading the Gophers to their second consecutive indoor title.

The Big Ten Conference office recognizes one student from each team as Sportsmanship Award Honorees. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. These students are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student from each institution at the end of the school year.

The Big Ten will announce Track Athlete of the Year, Field Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships, which are scheduled for March 11-12 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
