Together, Abbott and the Big Ten will use sports for good by championing a conference-wide blood donation competition, “The We Give Blood Drive,” to help rebuild the nation’s blood supply and ensure no one in need of blood has to go without.Students will be able to donate at mobile blood drives on campus, and alumni, fans and students alike can donate at blood donation centers across the country. Results will be tracked in real time at BigTen.Org/Abbott after donors attribute donations to their favorite school.&nbsp;The winning school will be announced at the 2024 Discover® Big Ten Football Championship Game on December 7, 2024 and win a $1 million dollar grant to advance student or community health. Individual donors will be offered a free one-month subscription to B1G+ and entered to win a trip to the 2024 Discover® Big Ten Football Championship Game on December 7, 2024 if they (1) donated blood, or (2) presented to donate blood at a blood collection or blood drive location and were formally assessed by the blood center but your donation was unsuccessful. Individual sweepstakes winners will be announced on November 18, 2024.

About the Competition

The U.S. is experiencing the <a href="https://www.aha.org/special-bulletin/2024-08-07-red-cross-americas-blood-centers-aabb-say-us-faces-critical-blood-and-platelet-shortages" target="_blank">worst blood shortage in a generation</a>. Shortages are exacerbated by the fact that <a href="https://americasblood.org/statistics_guide/" target="_blank">fewer and fewer people under 25 donate blood</a>.As blood only has a <a href="https://americasblood.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/U.S.-Blood-Donation-Statistics-and-Public-Messaging-Guide-Jan.-2024.pdf" target="_blank">shelf life of 42 days</a> and hospitals typically need to maintain a week’s supply of donated blood, many hospitals currently have fewer than two days’ worth of blood on hand.
