<div class="payload-richtext"><hr />In honor of Black History Month, The Big Ten Conference and Big Ten Network are recognizing pioneers from across the conference who made an impact at the schools, in their sports, and in their communities.Each day of February, the conference will publish a vignette highlighting an influential Black student-athlete throughout conference history. These vignettes will also be featured on social media. Scroll to read all about the B1G Impact Pioneer Class of 2022.<hr />George Flippin – Feb. 1George Flippin arrived at Nebraska in 1891 and integrated Nebraska’s second football team, becoming the first Black athlete in school history. The half back became a star over the next three seasons because of his physicality, while also competing in wrestling, track and field, as well as baseball.After graduation, he attended medical school in Chicago, later became a doctor and moved back to Stromsburg Nebraska, where he and his father later opened the town’s first hospital.Flippin was inducted into the Huskers Football Hall of Fame in 1974 while his name and silhouette is one of six on the Tunnel Walk path onto Memorial Stadium's Tom Osborne Field.George Flippin, a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Sherisa Livingston – Feb. 2 Sherisa Livingston was a star for the Wisconsin volleyball program. She was the first Badgers volleyball player to be named a first-team All-American and led them to their first Final Four in 2000. She earned all-tournament honors and was named Co-Big Ten Player of the Year that season. After her time in Madison, she played professionally for 11 seasons across the globe. Livingston is now the head volleyball coach at Radford where she continues to build her legacy. She is honored as a Big Impact Pioneer, class of 2022.<hr />Lorraine (Hutchings) Oliver – Feb. 3Lorraine Oliver was the first woman of color to play for the Penn State field hockey, basketball and lacrosse teams while also being the school’s first Black multi-sport athlete, doing so in the pre-Title IX era. She became Penn State McKeesport’s first women’s basketball coach, where she also coached volleyball and was an instructor. Oliver continued to teach and coach after moving to Georgia while also starting her own counseling business. The multi-sport Oliver is a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022. <hr />Tony Dungy – Feb. 4For anyone who follows sports, Tony Dungy is a household name. Dungy was recruited to the University of Minnesota as a quarterback and left the program as the all-time leader in total offense and touchdowns. Dungy played briefly in the NFL, but his stardom came after his playing career as a coach. He was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and later the Indianapolis Colts where he became the first Black head coach to win a Super Bowl. His illustrious career culminated with an induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016, where he joined Fritz Pollard as the only Black head coaches to be inducted. Dungy also paved the way for other Black coaches in the NFL, as he hired five Black assistants who would later become head coaches. Away from the field, Dungy is active in the community where he supported programs including Family First, Boys & Girls clubs and the National Fatherhood Association. Tony Dungy embodies what it means to be a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Taylor Thornton – Feb. 5 Taylor Thornton was the second four-time All-American in Northwestern women’s lacrosse history. The 2012 Lacrosse Honda Sports Award winner and national player of the year also was named the National Defender of the Year the previous season. She started all 90 games of her career and was an All-American in her final three seasons in Evanston. After playing professionally for two years, she developed an athletic training program and athlete preparedness company for young women to develop as student athletes. She’s currently a Chief Administrative Officer at a Venture Capital Firm and is a B1G Impact Pioneer, class of 2022.<hr />Charles “Deacon” Jones – Feb. 6 Charles “Deacon” Jones blazed many trails while at the University of Iowa. He was a seven-time Big Ten Track Champion and was the first Black athlete to win the NCAA Cross Country National Championship in 1955. He also went on to win the 1957 NCAA Track Championship in the two-mile run. Jones competed at two Olympic Games in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His accomplishments earned him induction into the University of Iowa’s Hall of Fame in 1989 and now he is honored as a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Shameka Marshall – Feb. 7While at Rutgers, Shameka Marshall was a two-time All-American in track and field. She set six school records in both jumps and hurdles and was induced into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017. After her time on the track, Marshall served as an assistant track coach at Temple and is now an adjunct professor in the College of Public Health. Marshall’s wide range of accolades has earned her the induction as a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Bill Garrett – Feb. 8 Bill Garrett was the first Black basketball player to play in the Big Ten, doing so from 1948 to 51. He was a first-team All-American, became the third Black player drafted by an NBA team, served two years in the military, and played for the Harlem Globetrotters in the 1950s. Garrett later became the head coach at Crispus Attucks High School and is the only player to win an Indiana state title as a player and a coach. He was inducted into the Indiana Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984 and the intra-mural center on campus is named in his honor. Bill Garrett, B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Regina Oliver – Feb. 9 Regina Oliver was a star in college lacrosse during her time at Ohio State. She was a three-time All-American and was named the conference player of the year in 2003. She also was a finalist for national player of the year twice and led the Buckeyes to their first NCAA Championship appearance in 2002. After her collegiate career, she played for Team USA in the World Cup, where she won Gold Medals in 2009 and 2013. Oliver is now the Cincinnati Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach where she continues to make a mark on the lacrosse community. Regina Oliver is a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Stacey Thomas – Feb. 10Stacey Thomas was a force on the court during her time at Michigan. Twenty years after her playing career, she still ranks in the Top 10 in scoring, rebounding and steals in program history. She was the 2000 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and she went on to play six seasons in the WNBA. Thomas has been an NCAA basketball official for the last 13 years and serves as the CEO and Senior Manager for Full Court 11 Enterprises, a company that assists and assigns basketball officials for rec centers and sports programs. Thomas’ impact both on and off the court make her a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />LaToya Clarke – Feb. 11LaToya Clarke had 159 career points and as a team captain in 2003-04, she helped lead the Gopher women’s hockey team to the program’s first national title as a senior. She played professionally for seven seasons for the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and is still involved with the sport, working for Warrior Sports since 2007, a hockey equipment company. She was inducted into the 2008 Black Ice Hockey and Sports Hall of Fame and is a B1G Impact Pioneer, class of 2022.<hr />Lamar Lundy – Feb. 12 Lamar Lundy lettered in football and basketball at Purdue for three seasons and is the only player to be named the team MVP in both sports. In 1957, he was drafted by the NFL and the NBA but stuck with the gridiron and excelled on the defensive line as part of the Los Angeles Rams “fearsome foursome”. He played 13 seasons before becoming an assistant coach for the San Diego Chargers. He was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1975 and the state’s basketball Hall of Fame in 1990. The National Road West Bridge was renamed the “Lamar Lundy Memorial Bridge” in his hometown of Richmond, Indiana.Lamar Lundy, B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Savatheda (Fynes) Coke – Feb. 13 Savatheda Coke is the only Spartan track and field athlete to win three national titles and is one of two Big Ten athletes to win the NCAA title in the 100m and the 200m in the same season. The Bahamas native earned four All-American honors in 1997 and was named Michigan State’s Female Athlete of the Year. She was a two-time Olympic medalist, including winning a gold medal in the 4x100m relay in 2000. Coke was inducted into the Michigan State Hall of Fame in 2018 and still coaches the sport on the high school and collegiate levels. Her accomplishments on and off the track made her a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Perdita Felicien – Feb. 14Perdita Felicien was a two-time NCAA Track Athlete of the Year, setting Illini, Big Ten and NCAA records in the 60- and 100-meter hurdles. The Ontario native is a 10-time Canadian champion and a two-time Olympian. Her post athletic career consists of her work as a broadcaster and she is an active ambassador in the international non-profit organization “Right to Play”, which empowers vulnerable children to overcome the effects of war, poverty, and disease around the world through play. Perdita Felicien, a B1G Impact Pioneer, class of 2022.<hr />Archie Griffin – Feb. 15Archie Griffin became just the fifth junior to win the Heisman Trophy in 1974 and a year later, became the first player to win multiple Heisman trophies, a record that still stands today. He ran for 100 yards in a NCAA record 31 straight games, was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986 and his name graces the Big Ten Championship game MVP award. It’s Griffin’s off the field work that stands out these days. In 2006, he was appointed to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Board of Directors and five years later, he was the first recipient of the Big Ten’s Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award. He created the Archie Griffin Scholarship Fund, which benefits Ohio State’s Olympic sports. Griffin is one of the most influential people in college sports and is now a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Jason Wright – Feb. 16 Jason Wright was an outstanding running back at Northwestern. He finished with over 4,000 all-purpose yards and 34 touchdowns during his time in Evanston, where he also served as a team captain. His outstanding collegiate career let him to the NFL, where he played for seven seasons. Wright’s most incredible accomplishments came after his playing career. He received his MBA from University of Chicago and worked for several years in consulting. In August of 2020, he was named the President of the Washington Football team. Not only did he become the first Black person to hold the position, at 38 years old, but he was also the youngest president in league history. Wright’s outstanding achievements make him a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Vicky Bullett – Feb. 17 Vicky Bullett is first of the most decorated players in Maryland history, winning three conference titles and being named the 1989 ACC Player of the Year. Bullett was a two-time Olympian, winning a gold medal in 1988 and played six seasons in the WNBA, making the all-star team in 1999. She was a 2011 Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee and has a street named after her in her hometown of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Bullett returned to Maryland, earned a degree in social work in 2001 and later returned to the sidelines for 13 seasons, including five as the head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan. She currently serves as the Director of Athletics, community outreach for Boys and Girls Clubs of the Eastern Panhandle in her home state. Vicky Bullett, a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Nicola Martial – Feb. 18 In the 1990’s, there weren’t many track athletes better than Nicola Martial. The six-time All-American dominated the track, specifically in the triple jump, where she won consecutive national championships in 1994 and 1995. In 1996, her incredible career reached the pinnacle when she represented her home country of Guyana in the Olympics. After her athletic career completed, she went on to spend 16 years in the New York City Department of Education. Martial currently works as an athletic coach and community developer in Las Vegas. Martial is enshrined as a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Malivai Washington – Feb. 19 Malivai Washington played tennis at Michigan where he was the top-ranked player in the nation as a sophomore. He turned pro after just two seasons and was ranked as high as 11th on the professional singles tour. His biggest breakthrough came in 1996 as he advanced to the final at Wimbledon, becoming the first Black man to do so since Arthur Ashe 21 years prior. That same year, he was also the first Black player named to the U.S. Olympic Tennis team. In 2009, he won the ATP Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year Award for his positive work through his own Youth Foundation and six years later, he won the National Junior Tennis League Founders’ Service Award for his continued contribution to support education and tennis among children. Malivai Washington, a B1G Impact Pioneer, class of 2022.<hr />Carolyn Peck – Feb. 20 Carolyn Peck is first of the most accomplished figures in women’s basketball. Her biggest on-court accomplishment was winning the 1999 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship as Purdue’s Head Coach, doing so at just 33 years old. She became the first Black women’s coach to hoist the trophy and is still the youngest coach to win a national title. That Boilermakers championship is still the only one by a Big Ten school in women’s college hoops. She was also the first Black coach to win the Winged Foot Award, given to the nation’s best coach in college basketball. Peck is a prominent figure in the media industry, serving as an analyst for nearly two decades. She’s also a motivational speaker and a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Wally Triplett – Feb. 21 Wally Triplett was the first Black player to start for the Penn State football team, doing so in 1945. He was the inspiration for Nittany Lions “We Are Penn State” moniker as the team refused to play in a game after being told to leave their Black players at home. In 1949, he became the first Black draftee to play in the NFL. As a rookie, he set an NFL record with 294 kickoff return yards, a record that stood for 44 seasons. In 1950, he became the first NFL player to serve in the Korean War and after a few professional seasons, he became a teacher, worked in insurance and in management at Chrysler. A feature film telling his life story is in development. Wally Triplett, a true trailblazer and a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Trevor Harris – Feb. 22Trevor Harris set the bar for men’s soccer at Michigan State. The two-time first-team All-American led the Spartans to tow national championships in 1967 and 1968. His success while in East Lansing made him the first soccer player inducted into Michigan State’s Hall of Fame. After his playing career, he returned to his Jamaican roots where he became a soccer coach in Kingston and worked in real estate. Harris is now enshrined as a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />James Ford – Feb. 23 James Ford was a true trailblazer during his time at Rutgers. In the late 1970’s, Ford became the first Black captain for Rutgers lacrosse, as he led the team in assists three of his four years on campus. Ford was a three-time All-American and is still the program’s all-time leader in assists. After his playing career, Ford served briefly as an assistant coach at Rutgers and later coached a community league. Ford’s accomplishments put him in the Rutgers Hall of Fame and now he is honored as a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr />Tangela Smith – Feb. 24During her time at Iowa, Tangela Smith was elite on the court. Smith was a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection and was named the 1998 Big Ten Player of the Year. She was a major part of two Big Ten regular season titles for the Hawkeyes. Her college success made her the 12th overall pick in the WNBA draft where she went on to play 14 seasons and win two WNBA championships. Smith came back to the Big Ten after her playing career, where she is now an assistant coach at Northwestern. Smith’s sustained success makes her a B1G Impact Pioneer, Class of 2022.<hr /></div>
