ROSEMONT, Ill. – Wisconsin senior Bob Liking was selected as the unanimous 2024 Big Ten Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year through a vote of the Big Ten head coaches, the conference announced Wednesday.It is the first postseason honor for Liking, who is the 17th Badger in program history to be named athlete of the year. He is just the eighth unanimous selection in Big Ten history.Liking competed at the 2024 NCAA DI Cross Country Championships, where he finished 16th in the 10K race (29:09.2), the only Big Ten runner to place in the top 20. His performance helped Wisconsin come in fourth overall, its best finish since 2012.Liking won his fourth consecutive individual title at the 2024 Big Ten Cross Country Championships, where he paced Wisconsin to its seventh-straight team championship. He finished the 8K course in a time of 22:47.3, a new championships record. Liking joined an elite group with Craig Virgin (Illinois), Bob Kennedy (Indiana) and Kevin Sullivan (Michigan) as the only runners in Big Ten history to capture four individual championships.The St. Charles, Ill., native also received recognition from the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Liking was tabbed as the Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year for the second time in his career, last winning it in 2022. He picked up first team All-Big Ten honors, All-Region recognition and his fourth All-America laurel this season.

The top two teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team at each regional earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championships, which will take place Nov. 23 in Madison, Wis.Three Big Ten programs finished in the top two of their respective 10K regional championships and earned automatic berths on Friday. Washington won the West Regional with 66 points behind a pair of top-10 finishers in Nathan Green (7th - 29:12.0) and Evan Jenkins (9th - 29:14.4). Oregon came in second in the West Regional behind the Huskies with 68 points.Big Ten champion Wisconsin scored 82 points to place second in the Great Lakes Regional. The team had five runners finish in the top 20.Individually, Penn State’s Brian DiCola placed fourth (29:37.1) in the Mid-Atlantic Region and Purdue’s Douglas Buckeridge came in second (29:12.9) in the Great Lakes Region to secure spots in Madison.Along with Friday’s automatic qualifiers, an additional 13 teams and two individual participants will be chosen by the NCAA Division I Track and Field and Cross Country Committee through an at-large selection process. The full field for the 2024 NCAA Championships will be announced during the NCAA selection show at 5 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, live on NCAA.com.

2024 Three Big Ten Men’s Cross Country Teams Headed to NCAA Championships

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced the first of its postseason men’s cross country awards on Thursday. Oregon’s Simeon Birnbaum was tabbed as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, while Wisconsin head coach Mick Byrne was unanimously selected as Big Ten Coach of the Year.This is the first postseason honor for Birnbaum, who helped Oregon finish third at the 2024 Big Ten Cross Country Championships in its inaugural season in the conference. The Rapid City, S.D. native was the top finisher for the Ducks at the championships as he crossed the finish line in fourth place with a time of 22:57.2. His finish earned him first team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman Team laurels.Byrne coached Wisconsin to its 14th Big Ten title since taking over the program in 2008. With his guidance, the Badgers secured their 55th team championship and 38th individual crown at the Big Ten Championships last week. Byrne had five runners place in the top 15 and coached senior Bob Liking to the individual title as he finished the 8K course in a time of 22:47.3. Liking’s time marked a new championships record and helped him join an elite group as just the fourth runner and only Badger in Big Ten history to capture four individual championships. Byrne is a 14-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, the most by any coach in men’s cross country history, and has won 14 of the last 17 coach of the year honors.The Big Ten also recognizes the Sportsmanship Award honorees from each institution. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have set themselves apart through hard work, sportsmanship and honorable behavior. His time marked a new championships record, besting Matt McClintock’s previous record time of 23:12.1. Minnesota, Ohio State and Maryland Earn Cross Country Weekly Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference’s 2024 Runners to Watch Lists were announced on Thursday, featuring 15 student-athletes from men’s cross country and 18 student-athletes from women’s cross country. The watch lists were determined by the conference’s head coaches.Three runners on the men’s side earned All-Big Ten honors last season, while a pair picked up All-Pac-12 laurels. For the women, five runners garnered all-conference recognition from the Big Ten and a duo from the Pac-12 notched all-conference awards.The 2024 cross country season is set to begin on Friday, Aug. 30. Men’s and Women’s Cross Country 2024 Runners to Watch Announced

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference today officially admitted the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington, bringing the total number of member institutions to 18. Competition will begin this season for all conference sports.“We are excited today to officially welcome the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington to the Big Ten Conference,” said Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. “All four institutions feature a combination of world class academics and athletics that are a great fit for our conference, and we look forward to building long-lasting relationships with the administrators, coaches, student-athletes, alumni and fans.”On June 30, 2022, the Big Ten’s Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) voted unanimously to admit the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC). A little more than a year later, on August 4, 2023, the COP/C voted unanimously once more to admit the University of Oregon and the University of Washington, with all four schools joining the Conference on August 2, 2024.Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are all members of the Association of American Universities, an organization of American research institutions devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. Today, they also become members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, where Big Ten institutions lead the nation with more than 75,000 instructional staff, 810,000 students, $17.4 billion in annual research expenditures, and 145 million library volumes, representing 25 percent of all print titles in North America.
