Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships Recap: Day Two
Oregon men and Illinois women claim second day leads

EUGENE, Ore. – After a strong second day from the Oregon men, the Ducks currently sit in first place with 65 points, followed closely by Nebraska (38 points) and Minnesota (39 points). The Illinois women claimed a second day lead with 41 points, with Minnesota (38 points) in second and Nebraska (28 points) in third.
Five individual champions were crowned on the men’s side in the long jump, decathlon, high jump, shot put and the 3,000m steeplechase-- while four individual champions were crowned on the women’s side in heptathlon, discus throw, long jump and 3,000m steeplechase.
Minnesota’s Charles Godfred claimed the men’s long jump title after he beat Ohio State’s DJ Fillmore and Kavian Kerr, who finished second and third respectively. Godfred finished with a mark of 8.05m (26-5) to add 10 points to the Golden Gophers’ team tally.
In the men’s high jump, Nebraska’s Tyus Wilson built off his indoor success and recorded a mark of 2.21m (7-3) to win the event. Illinois’ Kamyren Garrett and USC’s Elias Gerald tied for second, each securing a mark of 2.14m (7-0 ¼).
To win the men’s shot put, Wisconsin’s Jason Swarens tossed for 20.53m (67-4 ¼), which beat out Nebraska’s Cade Moran and Oregon’s Kobe Lawrence. Swarens was the only athlete who finished above 20 meters in the event.
Tacoria Humphrey claimed the new meet record in women’s long jump after jumping 6.59m (21-7 ½). The previous record of 6.55m (21-6) was by Iowa’s Jahisha Thomas.
Both the decathlon and heptathlon finished after multiple events on Friday and Saturday. Illinois’ Rafael Raap won the decathlon with 7,572 points. Rapp won the discus throw, pole vault and javelin throw to boost his score. Oregon’s Annika Williams earned a person best 5,914 points to win the heptathlon. She secured second in the high jump and shot put to round out her score.
Nebraska’s Kalynn Meyer claimed the Big Ten title in women’s discus with a mark of 58.29m (191-3). She beat out Minnesota’s Anthonett Nabwe, who already won the hammer throw on Friday.
To conclude the evening, Michigan State’s Katelyn Stewart-Barnett won the 3,000m steeplechase for the women and Oregon’s Benjamin Balazs won for the men. Stewart-Barnett won with a time of 9:42:78, almost six seconds better than the second-best time.
With all qualifying events concluded, 27 finals will take place, starting at 10:00 a.m. PT with women’s javelin and concluding at 3:38 p.m. PT with the women’s 4x400m relay. All track events will be broadcast on Big Ten Network and field events will be available on B1G+/RunnerSpace.
