5 from Big Ten Selected in Premier Lacrosse League Draft

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Five Big Ten student-athletes were selected among the 32 picks in the 2023 Premier Lacrosse League Draft on Tuesday night.
Maryland defenseman Brett Makar led the way, as the third overall selection by the Atlas. Teammate Kyle Long was also selected by the Atlas with the third pick in the fourth round, number 27 overall.
Alex Mazzone, a defenseman from Johns Hopkins, went 16th overall to the Waterdogs, while Ohio State attackman Jack Myers went 20th to the Chrome. Michigan face-off specialist Nick Rowlett came off the board in the third round, as the Chaos made him the 23rd overall pick.
A two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Makar has been an anchor for the Terrapins defensive effort throughout his career, notching 57 caused turnovers and 162 ground balls in his 72 career games. On the season, Makar ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 19 caused turnovers, while his 47 ground balls list second on the team.
Long has tallied 91 points in his 70 carer appearances for Maryland, pairing 54 goals and 91 assists. Long’s 23 career postseason points lead the squad, while his 91 career assists rank 13th on the program’s all-time list. Long also counts a pair of game-winning goals among his 10 goals, to go with 20 assists on the season, good for second on the team.
An All-Big Ten First Team defender, Mazzone has started all 16 games on close defense for the Blue Jays this season and counts one goal, two assists, a team-high 67 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers to his credit.
Myers, an All-Big Ten Second Team selection in 2023, led the Buckeyes with 42 points on 20 goals and a team-high 22 assists this season. For his career, the attacker totaled 121 goals and 115 assists for 236 points. He is just the third Buckeye in program history to surpass 100 career assists and is the sixth Ohio State player to reach 200 points.
Rowlett has won 57 percent (136-of-327) of his faceoffs this season, good for 18th in the NCAA. The graduate student recently became the first player in Wolverine history to secure 300 ground balls and owns the most faceoff wins in school history (496) and boasts a career win percentage of 55 percent.
The Premier Lacrosse League will open its 2023 season on June 3-4 with four games at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in Albany, N.Y.
