Indiana, Penn State and Purdue Receive Big Ten Baseball Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its baseball weekly awards for games played Feb. 16-18.

Player of the Week
Matt Maloney, Penn State

Jr. – C — Windham, N.H. — Central Catholic
  • Helped Penn State to three wins over the weekend, batting .625 with a home run and 11 RBI while compiling a 1.000 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage
  • Drove in two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game and scored a game-tying run in the 10th in Penn State’s 6-5 opening-day win over Monmouth Feb. 16 in Cary, N.C.
  • Recorded 31 putouts and four assists behind the plate
  • The Dayton transfer takes home his first Big Ten award
  • Last Penn State Player of the Week: Kyle Hannon (March 9, 2022)

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Connor Foley, Indiana

So. – S-RHP — Jasper, Ind. — Jasper
  • A reliever last season, Foley made his first career start in Indiana’s 7-2 win over 18th-ranked Coastal Carolina Feb. 17 at the Baseball at the Beach Tournament
  • Struck out seven batters over 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits and no earned runs
  • Held the Chanticleers to a .143 batting average, reaching 97 mph on the radar gun
  • Collects the first Big Ten weekly honor of his career
  • Last Indiana Pitcher of the Week: Ethan Phillips (April 24, 2023)

Freshman of the Week
Luke Gaffney, Purdue

Fr. – 1B — Danville, Ky. — Boyle County
  • Began his collegiate career by hitting safely in four-straight games
  • Went 9-for-18 (.500) at the plate, producing five doubles and 14 total bases
  • The catcher-turned-first baseman was flawless from the field, recording 47 putouts and three assists for a 1.000 fielding percentage
  • The redshirt freshman receives his first-ever Big Ten award
