Illinois Survives Spartans’ Rally in Nail-Biter

Illini advance to quarterfinal rematch with No. 2 seed Iowa

No. 10 seed Illinois secured a nail-biting 71-69 win over No. 7 Michigan State, surviving a late Spartans rally in the final seconds of the second round of the 2026 Allstate Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament . The Illini led 61-54 midway through the fourth quarter, but MSU’s Kennedy Blair (game-high 30 points) and Grace VanSlooten (13 points) kept the Spartans within striking distance. Berry Wallace hit clutch free throws for Illinois, and the defense forced a critical turnover in the final seconds to seal the victory.

Cearah Parchment led the Illini with 15 first-half points, helping them build a 36-29 halftime lead. Michigan State stormed back in the third quarter with a 9-0 run to briefly take the lead, but Illinois responded with key plays from Jasmine Brown-Hagger and Destiny Jackson. Despite foul trouble for both teams, Illinois’ balanced scoring and defensive resilience proved decisive. The Illini advance after a hard-fought battle, showcasing their grit and composure under pressure.

Fourth Quarter: Ready for madness?

  • Battling back and forth in Indy. Destiny Jackson and Jasmine Brown-Hagger put up eight for the Illini, while Grace VanSlooten and Kennedy Blair score six for MSU. 61-54 Illinois at the media timeout (6:11).
  • Notable: Brown-Hagger picks up her fourth personal foul.
  • Blair nets her 30th point for Michigan State. Spartans trail 67-63.
  • VanSlooten scores to put MSU within two with 1:48 remaining! She picks up her fourth personal foul as well.
  • Jackson toughs out a layup for Illinois before Jalyn Brown nails a jumper for MSU. 69-67 with 43 seconds left!
  • Berry Wallace drills two Illini free throws, but Ines Sotelo counters with a quick two. 71-69 Illinois, 31 seconds remaining.
  • Wallace fouls a Spartan player to give MSU possession with 19 seconds left.
  • VanSlooten tries to get a two from underneath the basket, but it doesn't go. Ball flies out of bounds in the scuffle, and the Spartans maintain possession. Nine seconds remain.
  • The Illini defense forces an errant pass from the Spartans.
  • ILLINOIS GETS THE BALL IN BEFORE MICHIGAN STATE CAN FOUL! The Illini close out the 71-69 win!

Third Quarter: Spartans storm back

  • Illinois' Brown-Hagger picks up her third foul early in Q3 (8:18)
  • Brown buries Michigan State's first three of the day. With that and a Blair layup, the Spartans pull within one! 41-40 Illinois (5:46).
  • Notable: Aaliyah Guyton (ILL) picks up her fourth personal foul.
  • THE SPARTANS TAKE THE LEAD! It's a 9-0 run for MSU to make it 42-41.
  • Brown-Hagger puts the Illini back up four with a layup and three-pointer! 48-44 Illinois.
  • The teams trade baskets, and the Illini head into the final period with a slight 53-48 lead.
  • Notable: Illinois has four players with eight points or more, whereas Michigan State has just two. Blair (MSU) leads the game with 22 points.

Second Quarter: Illini earn a seven-point edge

  • Notable: All but one bucket has come from within the three-point arc so far.
  • Michigan State head coach Robyn Fralick successfully appeals a possession call to keep the Spartans' ball. They trail 20-17 (8:33).
  • The teams alternate punches, and it's 23-21 Illini.
  • Illinois has flipped the turnover script – Michigan State has now matched the Illini's seven turnovers.
  • Three players have two personal fouls: VanSlooten (MSU), Berry Wallace (ILL), and Jasmine Brown-Hagger (ILL).
  • Illinois, led by 15 points from Cearah Parchment, grows its lead to 36-29 at halftime.
  • Notable: Illinois is shooting 50% from the field compared to Michigan State's 37%. The Spartans have not made a three on seven attempts.
  • Notable: Blair (MSU) has 14 of Michigan State's 29 first-half points.

First Quarter: Young Illini squad settles in

  • Illinois starts the game with four consecutive turnovers. Spartans lead 4-0.
  • Notable: The Illini have six turnovers in the opening four minutes, and Michigan State has capitalized with six points. Spartans lead 10-6 at 6:01. Parchment has all of Illinois' points so far.
  • Kennedy Blair has a quick eight points for the Spartans. MSU leads 15-12 at the media timeout (2:40).
  • A Maddie Webber (ILL) layup ties the game at 17 with 45 seconds remaining!
  • The Illini finish the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 20-17 lead!
