Buckeyes’ Relentless Defense Earns Semifinal Bid over Gophers

Forced turnovers and Lemmila’s double-double secure 60-55 victory to advance

No. 5 seed Ohio State edged out No. 4 Minnesota, 60-55, in a gritty Big Ten Tournament battle, advancing behind a strong defensive effort and standout performances. The Buckeyes forced 21 turnovers, doubling Minnesota’s season average, and converted them into 15 points.

Elsa Lemmila led the way with a double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds), while the Cambridge sisters combined for a scoring surge, including 14 straight points in the second quarter. Ohio State built a seven-point lead in the third, but Minnesota clawed back to make it a one-possession game late. Down 58-55 with 43 seconds left, the Gophers missed a critical three-pointer before Jaloni Cambridge sealed the win with a clutch layup. Despite Sophie Hart's double-double (12 points, 19 rebounds), the Gophers couldn't overtake the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s relentless defense and timely scoring secured the victory, sending them to the semifinals.

First Quarter: Buckeyes hot on the Gophers' tail

  • Sophie Hart gets out to a hot start for the Gophers, scoring Minnesota's first six points. The Buckeyes counter with Elsa Lemmila, as Minnesota leads 6-4.
  • Minnesota stays ahead, 11-7, at the first media timeout.
  • Notable: Minnesota is the tournament's first top-four seed not to have a First Team All-Big Ten honoree. Grace Grocholski and Tori McKinney are on the second team, while Amaya Battle landed on the third team.
  • Back-to-back threes from Chance Gray and Jaloni Cambridge put the Buckeyes within one.
  • Lemmila ties it with a three-point play, but Grocholski's two puts Minnesota ahead 18-16 at the end of Q1.

Second Quarter: Cambridge sisters give OSU the edge

  • After trading a couple buckets, the Cambridge sisters take over with six straight Buckeye points to give OSU a 26-22 lead.
  • Notable: Hart already has a double-double for Minnesota (10 points, 10 rebounds).
  • Notable: The Cambridge sisters have scored Ohio State's last 14 points, 10 of which come off a fast break.
  • Brylee Glenn gets one last score for Minnesota, sending us to the half with OSU up 32-28.

Third Quarter: Gritty Gophers staying in it

  • Ohio State forces a couple Gopher turnovers to earn a seven-point advantage.
  • Notable: Minnesota already has 14 turnovers in the beginning of the third quarter. Their season average is just 10.6, which is top five in the nation.
  • Gray buries a triple to give Ohio State its largest lead, 44-36, before Grocholski responds with Minnesota's first three of the day (at 2:01 in Q3).
  • Notable: Gophers Amaya Battle and McKinny have three personal fouls.
  • Despite making 17 turnovers and only two threes in the game thus far, Minnesota only trails 47-42.

Fourth Quarter: Down to the wire

  • After two scoreless minutes, Ava Watson sinks a three to give OSU a 50-42 lead.
  • Following the media timeout, the teams both throw punches, but Ohio State maintains a seven-point advantage thanks to back-to-back layups from Lemmila.
  • Notable: Ohio State's defense has been disruptive. The Buckeyes have 12 steals and have created 21 turnovers, capitalizing with 15 points.
  • Down 58-55 with 43 seconds left, Grocholski pulls up for a three for Minnesota, but it bounces off the rim. OSU calls a timeout with 39 seconds remaining.
  • Jaloni Cambridge speeds through with a layup to give the Buckeyes a five-point advantage with just 16 seconds left.
