Northwestern Outlasts Penn State to Advance

Martinelli’s 24-point night powers Wildcats into second round of men's basketball tournament

No. 15 seed Northwestern outlasted No. 18 seed Penn State in a hard-fought battle, securing a 76-66 victory to advance in the TIAA Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament. The first half was a back-and-forth affair with five ties and three lead changes. Nick Martinelli led the Wildcats early with 13 points, while Ivan Juric kept the Nittany Lions in it with 12. Northwestern held a slim 34-32 lead at the break.

The second half saw Northwestern gradually pull ahead, with Martinelli finishing with a game-high 24 points. The Wildcats capitalized on Penn State’s mistakes, scoring 24 points off 17 Nittany Lion turnovers. The 'Cats looked like a true unit with 21 assists, led by a Northwestern single-game tournament record nine from Jayden Reid. A late Martinelli steal and slam helped Northwestern secure the win and keep its tournament hopes alive.

First Half: Five ties, three lead changes, one tight game

  • Penn State scores four early, but Northwestern counters with an 8-0 run, capped off with a Jayden Reid three. Northwestern leads 8-4 (16:24).
  • Ivan Juric scores Penn State's next eight points as the teams trade buckets, and the game's tied at 12 (14:50).
  • Nick Martinelli goes on his own 6-0 run for the Wildcats! He has nine points already.
  • The teams trade scores, and it's 20-16 Northwestern at the media timeout (11:31).
  • Freddie Dilione V comes out of the break with five straight points for the Nittany Lions to tie it up at 21 (9:00).
  • Penn State goes on a 6-0 run to take the lead, courtesy of a Melih Tunca triple and a three-point play from Josh Reed. It's 29-26 PSU with 4:26 left in the half.
  • Northwestern grabs the lead right back thanks to Martinelli and Jake West. 32-29 Cats with 2:01 remaining.
  • Both teams score, and Northwestern takes a 34-32 edge into the break.
  • Notable: We've already had five ties and three lead changes. The largest lead so far was just six points (Northwestern, 12:33).

Second Half: 'Cats claw away

  • A three-point play from Kayden Mingo puts Penn State within one, Martinelli sinks a shot from distance in response, Reed matches it with his own triple, and the other Reid claps back with a three-point play. We've got a GAME! 42-38 Northwestern (17:10).
  • Martinelli gives the Wildcats their largest lead of the game (seven) off a PSU turnover, but Mingo gets it back with a three-point play. Another Martinelli bucket gives him is 20th point of the evening.
  • Notable: Penn State leading scorer Juric picks up his fourth personal foul.
  • Notable: Northwestern has 13 points off of Penn State's 10 turnovers.
  • Both teams throw punches, but the Wildcats maintain a 58-51 lead with 9:40 remaining.
  • Jordan Clayton gets a layup on the fastbreak to extend Northwestern's lead to nine. 64-55 with under six minutes left.
  • A Martinelli steal and slam gives the Cats a 13-point lead! 68-55, 3:48 on the clock.
  • Northwestern closes out the 76-66 win to advance!
