Second-Half Surge Powers Northwestern to Third Round

Martinelli, West lead 'Cats past Indiana to advance in TIAA Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament

No. 15 seed Northwestern is moving on to the third round of the TIAA Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament! The Wildcats and No. 10 seed Indiana traded blows in a thrilling first half, with the Hoosiers jumping out to an early lead behind Lamar Wilkerson and Darian DeVries. Jake West kept the Wildcats in the fight, scoring 14 points in the opening half, while Big Ten leading scorer Nick Martinelli was held quiet for the first eight minutes. A late 8-0 Northwestern run briefly gave them the lead, but Indiana countered with a quick flurry to take a slim 37-36 edge into halftime.

The second half saw Martinelli come alive, scoring seven quick points to spark the Wildcats. Northwestern’s defense clamped down, forcing turnovers and fueling a game-changing 19-5 run. Martinelli was unstoppable, pouring in 19 of his 28 points after the break, as the Wildcats extended their lead to double digits. Despite Indiana’s attempts to rally, Northwestern held firm, closing out the 74-61 victory to advance. It marks the Wildcats’ first tournament with two wins since 2017, a triumph powered by their defense, Martinelli’s second-half heroics, and West's 18-point performance. With his big night, Martinelli also became Northwestern's all-time tournament points leader, passing Michael Thompson.

No. 15 seed Northwestern advances to play No. 7 seed Purdue in the third round at 5:30 p.m. CT tomorrow on Big Ten Network. In their last meeting, the Wildcats held the Boilermakers to their lowest scoring half of the season, but Purdue bounced back to win, 70-66. First Half: IU scrapes out a one-point lead

  • The teams trade buckets off the bat, but IU gets a 6-0 spurt to earn a 13-9 edge at the first media (14:29). Lamar Wilkerson and Darian DeVries combine for 11 of the Hoosiers' points so far.
  • Notable: Big Ten leading scorer Nick Martinelli (Northwestern) was held scoreless for over eight minutes.
  • More back-and-forth scores – including four points from Sam Alexis (IU) – but the Hoosiers maintain their advantage. 22-13 with 10:09 to go.
  • A Nick Dorn three gives the Hoosiers their largest lead of the game, 25-15 (9:24).
  • Key contributor: Jake West (NU) has started the game 4-of-4 from the field with nine points for the Wildcats.
  • Martinelli and West pick up four points for Northwestern, but Conor Enright responds with a three. 28-19 Indiana at the media break (7:28).
  • Three Indiana turnovers help the Wildcats creep closer. 30-25 IU (5:26).
  • It's an 8-0 Northwestern run! Wildcats take a 33-32 lead on a Tyler Kropp triple!
  • IU counters with five quick points (Dorn nails another three, Tayton Conerway puts up two) to get back on top. 1:33 left in the half.
  • Angelo Ciaravino slams one down, and Martinelli buries a free throw. Indiana takes a one-point edge into halftime (37-36).
  • Notable: Both teams are shooting 55% or better from the field, and they both have seven men with points on the scoreboard. Northwestern is winning the turnover battle, 7-2.
  • Key Contributors: West (NU) leads all scorers with 14 points, followed by Wilkerson (10).

Second Half: Wildcats' big run

  • Martinelli opens with seven of Northwestern's first nine points to give the Wildcats a 45-41 lead! (17:06).
  • Reed Bailey and Wilkerson put up a combined seven points for the Hoosiers, but Northwestern goes on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 53-44! 11:44 remains.
  • Notable: Northwestern has outscored Indiana 19-5 over the last 7.5 minutes (14:59–7:23).
  • Indiana has a couple scoring spurts, but the Wildcats defend their lead, 74-59, with under a minute to play.
  • Northwestern dribbles out the 74-61 win to advance!
  • Historic tidbit: It's Northwestern's first tournament with two wins since 2017.
  • Key Contributor: After behind held to single-digits in the first half, Martinelli scored 19 of Northwestern's 38 second-half points. He finished with 28 points on the night.
  • Notable: The Wildcats scored 12 points off of 11 IU turnovers.
