Wisconsin Scrapes by after Edge-of-Your-Seat Thriller
Blackwell's record night helps the Badgers survive Washington's comeback and advance to tournament quarterfinals
We didn't think Wisconsin would replicate the three-point madness from its regular-season meeting with Washington in the Big Ten Tournament. We also didn't think that Washington would storm all the way back from an 18-point deficit to bring the game down to the final possession.
Boy, were we wrong.
No. 5 seed Wisconsin survived a massive late-game surge from No. 12 seed Washington to secure a thrilling 85-82 victory and advance in the TIAA Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament. The Badgers set the tone early with an explosive 11-2 run, ultimately taking a 43-33 advantage into the locker room. A barrage of three-pointers fueled Wisconsin's high-powered offense, with an incredible 45 of its final points coming from beyond the arc.
Trailing by as many as 18 points in the second half, the Huskies completely flipped the script by adjusting their defense and locking down the perimeter. Hannes Steinbach powered the comeback effort with a massive double-double of 25 points and 16 rebounds, heavily supported by Zoom Diallo’s relentless 24-point performance. The Huskies methodically clawed their way back into the contest, eventually making it a one-point game with just over a minute remaining on the clock.
Clinging to a fragile lead, a previously scoreless Andrew Rohde stepped up to the charity stripe and calmly sank two clutch free throws with 8.3 seconds left to extend the gap to three. Diallo found an open look on the final possession, but his game-tying attempt bounced off the rim. Wisconsin breathes a sigh of relief as it carries this hard-fought momentum forward into its next high-stakes tournament showdown. John Blackwell broke the Wisconsin Big Ten Tournament single-game scoring record with a career-high 34 points (and 10 rebounds), while Nick Boyd orchestrated the floor beautifully with 23 points and nine assists.
No. 5 seed Wisconsin advances to take on No. 4 seed Illinois in the quarterfinals at approximately 1:30 p.m. CT tomorrow on Big Ten Network (after Ohio State-Michigan). In their February meeting, the Badgers rallied from a double-digit deficit to knock off then-No. 8 ranked Illinois in overtime in Champaign. Want to see the rematch in person in Chicago? Click here .
