Dent Records First Triple-Double in Big Ten Tournament History

The first triple-double in a major conference tournament since 2003 advances UCLA to quarterfinals

The No. 6 seed UCLA Bruins punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of the TIAA Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament with a definitive 72-59 victory over Rutgers. Driven by a relentless offense and +10 rebounding margin, the Bruins stifled any Scarlet Knight surges to secure the win. The night, however, belonged to Donovan Dent and his record-breaking performance.

With his final rebound, UCLA guard Donovan Dent became the first player ever in Big Ten Tournament history to post a triple-double, recording 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists in the victory. The last time that any player recorded a triple-double in a major conference tournament was back in 2003 in the Big 12 Tournament, and it's only happened three times since 1996-97. Dent is also just the fifth Bruin all-time to record a triple-double in any game, with the last coming in 2013.

The game began with scoring runs from both teams. Rutgers started with a 4-0 lead, but UCLA answered with an 11-0 tear, sparked by early buckets from Bilodeau. The Scarlet Knights fired back with an 8-0 run to regain a 12-11 edge. Undeterred, the Bruins launched a 12-2 spurt to take control, heading into halftime with a 30-24 lead, largely due to a defensive scheme that held Tariq Francis scoreless in the first half after his 29-point game yesterday.

UCLA came out of the break energized, starting the second half with an 11-2 run led by Bilodeau and Eric Dailey Jr. Trent Perry's outside shooting stretched the floor and pushed the Bruins' advantage to double digits. Rutgers didn't fade, however. Lino Mark (17 points) and Darren Buchanan Jr. (9) kept the offense moving. A late 7-2 push by the Scarlet Knights trimmed the deficit to 59-50 with just over five minutes remaining. Sensing the pressure, the Bruins shut the door. Bilodeau sank four straight free throws and later a clutch three-pointer to cap his 21-point performance. UCLA controlled the final minutes, closing out the 72-59 victory and advancing with historic momentum.

No. 6 seed UCLA advances to take on No. 3 seed Michigan State in the quarterfinals at about 8 p.m. CT tomorrow on Big Ten Network (after Purdue-Nebraska). The Spartans led by as many as 31 points in their 82-59 win over the Bruins last month, but tonight looked like a brand-new, revived UCLA squad.
