How 'Bout Them Bruins?

Dent, Perry lead UCLA to first Big Ten Tournament semifinal appearance over Michigan State

No. 6 seed UCLA fended off No. 3 seed Michigan State, 88-84, in a high-intensity quarterfinal showdown to secure its spot in the semifinals of the 2026 TIAA Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Bruins set the tone early, racing to a double-digit lead behind red-hot 63% shooting in the first half. Donovan Dent and Trent Perry led the first-half charge for UCLA, combining for 22 points and helping the Bruins take a commanding 11-point advantage into halftime.

Michigan State came roaring back after the break, piecing together a determined second-half run that gradually wiped away UCLA’s double-digit cushion. The Spartans' rally was powered by key three-pointers from Kur Teng, a couple highlight-reel dunks from Coen Carr, and Jeremy Fears Jr.'s playmaking (21 points, 13 assists). They closed the gap and kept the outcome in doubt until the final moments.

In a frantic final minute, both teams traded crucial baskets as Michigan State trimmed the deficit to just two, setting up a tense finish with the game hanging in the balance. Perry delivered in the clutch for the Bruins, sinking six free throws in the final 36 seconds to maintain UCLA’s lead. Dent sealed the deal for UCLA by intercepting Michigan State’s final inbounds pass.

Coming hot off the first triple-double in Big Ten Tournament history, Dent led the Bruins with 23 points and 12 assists, followed by Perry's 22 tallies. Eric Dailey Jr. and Skyy Clark also finished in double figures.

No. 6 seed UCLA advances to take on No. 7 seed Purdue in the semifinals at about 2:30 p.m. CT (after Michigan-Wisconsin) tomorrow on CBS. Want to see it in person in Chicago?  Click here .
