Three Big Ten Men’s Basketball Student-Athletes Named CSC Academic All-Americans

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Three Big Ten Conference men’s basketball student-athletes have been selected as Academic All-Americans by the members of the College Sports Communicators (CSC), the organization announced on Wednesday.

Illinois’ Marcus Domask was named to the First Team, while Iowa’s Payton Sandfort scored a spot on the Second Team. Ohio State’s Jamison Battle collected Third Team honors.

Domask, an All-Big Ten First Team performer, scored 15.9 points per game, second on the Illini, while his 3.9 assists led the squad. The Recreation, Sport, and Tourism major scored in double-figures in 28 of the team’s final 32 games, including a 12 point, 11 rebound, 10 assist performance against Morehead State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the sixth triple-double in program history and 10th in NCAA Tournament history.

Sandfort, a finance major, collected All-Big Ten Third Team accolades after leading the Hawkeyes with 16.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per outing. Sandfort led the league with 94 three-pointers, while his 91.1 free throw percentage and 37.9 three-point percentage ranked second and third, respectively. Like Domask, Sandfort also notched a triple-double, the first in program history, pairing 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a win over Penn State.  

Battle earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention after posting 15.3 points, second on the Buckeyes, and 5.2 rebounds per game. The Sports Coaching major led the Big Ten and ranked sixth in the country with a 92.6 free throw percentage, while his 43.3 shooting clip from three-point range was good for second in the conference and ninth in Division I.  

To be considered for CSC Academic All-America status, students must not only maintain a minimum 3.30 GPA, but must also be a starter or key reserve, competing in at least 50 percent of their school’s contests.
