Big Ten Men's Basketball Players Score All-America Honors

Purdue's Braden Smith, Wisconsin's John Tonje named consensus All-Americans

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Five Big Ten student-athletes recently collected All-America accolades.

Purdue’s Braden Smith and Wisconsin’s John Tonje have been named consensus First and Second Team All-Americans, respectively, after collecting honors from the Associated Press (AP), National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Sporting News, and US Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Smith was named to the First Team by all four entities, while Tonje was named to the AP, NABC, and Sporting News Second Teams and earned a Third Team honor from the USBWA.

This marks the 16th consecutive season the Big Ten has boasted at least one consensus All-American.

Maryland’s Derik Queen, Purdue’s Trey Kaufman-Renn, and Rutgers’ Dylan Harper also received AP Honorable Mention.

Smith, the 2025 Big Ten Player of the Year, ranks second on the Boilermakers with 16.1 points, while his 8.7 assists per game are good for second in the country. The junior guard set the Big Ten record for assists in conference play only with 175, breaking the previous record set by Michigan State's Cassius Winston (157) by 18 assists, almost a full assist per game.

Smith’s nine point-assist double-doubles are the third most for a high-major player in the last 20 seasons, joining Oklahoma's Trae Young (14) in 2018 and Kansas State's Markquis Nowell (10) in 2023.

In his first season with Wisconsin, Tonje leads the team in scoring at 19.2 points per game, fifth in the Big Ten. The Omaha, Nebraska-native has produced four 30-point performances on the season. He poured in 41, the fourth-highest point total in program history, in a 103-88 win over No. 9 Arizona, setting a school record by going 21-for-22 at the free throw line.

He is on the verge of becoming just the fifth Badger since 1990 to average at least 19.0 ppg in a season, joining Michael Finley (1993-95), Devin Harris (2004), Alando Tucker (2006-07), and Johnny Davis (2022).
