Michigan Leads 2022-23 Big Ten Men’s Gymnastics Preseason Poll

ROSEMONT, Ill. (Dec. 21, 2022) – Michigan was selected unanimously to win the 2022-23 Big Ten Conference men’s gymnastics championship, according to a poll of the Big Ten coaches released Wednesday.

The defending Big Ten Champion Wolverines captured their 19th conference title last spring, while also securing a share of their third regular-season crown since the conference began awarding a regular-season championship in 2019.

In Wednesday’s preseason conference poll, Michigan was followed by Nebraska. Ohio State, which earned a share of its first Big Ten regular-season title last year, was voted third, with Penn State and Illinois completing the balloting.

All five Big Ten programs competed in the NCAA national qualifying sessions last spring, with Michigan (third), Nebraska (fourth), Ohio State (fifth) and Illinois (sixth) advancing to the national championships and placing among the top six in the country.

In addition to Wednesday’s preseason Big Ten poll, the conference unveiled the 2022-23 Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch List, as selected by the conference coaches. Highlighting this year’s 10-person Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch list are Michigan’s Paul Juda, the two-time Big Ten Gymnast of the Year who is also the reigning NCAA champion in the all-around and on the vault, defending Big Ten vault champion Kameron Nelson of Ohio State, and trio of returning all-conference selections in Illinois’ Connor McCool and Ian Skirkey and Ohio State’s Donovan Hewitt.

The 2022-23 Big Ten men’s gymnastics season gets underway Jan. 7, with Michigan playing host to Greenville and Simpson in a tri-meet, while Penn State welcomes Army West Point. Nebraska starts Jan. 13-14, joining Penn State at the West Point Open, while Illinois and Ohio State debut Jan. 14 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago (Michigan will also compete in that meet).

Ohio State will serve as the host institution for the 2023 Big Ten Championships that will take place March 31-April 1 at the Covelli Center in Columbus. The 2023 NCAA Championships will also be held on a Big Ten campus, with Penn State’s Rec Hall the site of this year’s national meet on April 14-15. It will be the ninth time PSU plays host to the NCAA Championships and the first since 2013.
