Penn State, Michigan Claim Men’s Gymnastics Weekly Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its Men’s Gymnasts of the Week for the week ending March 3, 2024.

Gymnast of the Week

Josh Karnes, Penn State

Jr. – Erie, Pa. – Erie – Major: Media Studies

  • Recorded first place finishes on the parallel bars (14.850) and high bar (13.700) in No. 6 Penn State’s win over No. 13 Springfield

  • Added a fourth place finish on eh pommel horse (13.600)

  • Garners his fifth Gymnast of the Week award and third of the season

  • Last Penn State Gymnast of the Week: Josh Karnes (Feb. 26, 2024)

Freshman of the Week

Luke Esparo, Penn State

Wallingford, Conn. – Mark T. Sheehan – Major: Health & Human Development

  • Paired a first and two second place finishes, as the Nittany Lions downed Springfield

  • Won his first career vault title with a career-best score of 14.550

  • Scored a career-best 13.750 on the floor and 13.500 on the rings, both good for second place finishes

  • Earns his first Freshman of the Week award

  • Last Penn State Freshman of the Week: Landon Simpson (Jan. 8, 2024)

Event Specialist of the Week

Javier Alfonso, Michigan

Sr. – Miami, Fla. – Miami Palmetto – Major: Cognitive Science and Psychology

  • Scored a 15.05 on the still rings, just 0.05 points off his national-leading score of 15.10, as No. 4 Michigan topped No. 1 Oklahoma

  • Earns his second Event Specialist of the Week honor

  • Last Michigan Event Specialist of the Week: Fred Richard (Feb. 5, 2024)
