Big Ten Hockey Tournament Update (March 16)
Top-seed Michigan State and No. 4 seed Michigan won semifinal games at the Big Ten Hockey Tournament to set the stage for the championship game next Saturday (March 26) in East Lansing, Mich. It will be the first meeting in the tournament final for two schools that comprise the "most played" rivarly in college hockey.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan state prevailed 2-1 over No. 7 seed Ohio State in a goaltending battle at Munn Ice Arena.
The Spartans (23-9-3) responded quickly after the Buckeyes (14-20-4) tied the game in the third, receiving the go-ahead goal 13 seconds later from Nash Nienhuis.
MSU goaltender Trey Augustine finished with 37 saves, one more than his OSU counterpart Logan Terness.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Michigan took a two-goal lead into the third period and hung on for a 2-1 win over No. 3 seed Minnesota.
The Wolverines (21-13-3) finished with a 31-24 shot advantage while receiving goals from Kienan Draper and Gavin Brindley. Minnesota's Jimmy Snuggerud scored an extra attacker goal with 1:29 left in regulation to break Jake Barczewski's shutout bid.
The Gophers (22-10-5) suffered their third-straight loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament.
