Four Big Ten Teams Qualify for the NCAA Hockey Tournament

Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State begin play this week

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four Big Ten teams have been selected to participate in the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship which begins Thursday. The four bids match a Big Ten record that occurred in 2018, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

Michigan State (26-6-4), which captured the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, is a No. 1 seed (No. 2 seed overall) and will host No. 4 seed Cornell (18-10-6) of ECAC Hockey on Thursday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+ at the Huntington Center in the Toledo (Ohio) Regional Semifinals. The No. 1/1-ranked Spartans, who received the Big Ten’s automatic berth, are making their 29th NCAA Tournament appearance and second in a row.

Ohio State (24-13-2) is the No. 3 seed in the Toledo Regional and will face No. 2 seed Boston University (21-13-2) of Hockey East in a semifinal on Thursday, March 27, at 2 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The No. 9/9-ranked Buckeyes are making their 11th NCAA Tournament appearance, having last qualified in 2023.

Minnesota (25-10-4) is the No. 2 seed at the Fargo (N.D.) Regional and will take on No. 3 seed Massachusetts (20-13-5) of Hockey East in a semifinal on Thursday, March 27, at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 Scheels Arena. The No. 5/5-ranked Golden Gophers are making their NCAA-record 42nd appearance in the tournament, having earned a berth five consecutive seasons.

Penn State (20-13-4), a No. 4 seed, is the host institution for the Allentown (Pa.) Regional and squares off against No. 1 seed Maine (24-7-6) of Hockey East in a semifinal on Friday, March 28, at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 at the PPL Center. The No. 13/13-ranked Nittany Lions are making their fourth appearance in the NCAA postseason and first since 2023.

Regional winners will advance to the NCAA Frozen Four, to be held April 10 and 12, at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Mo.
