Michigan, Michigan State and Minnesota Claim Three Stars Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its Three Stars of the Week for hockey games played March 1-2.

First Star

Jaxon Nelson, Minnesota

Gr. – F – Magnolia, Minn. — Omaha Lancers (USHL)

  • Recorded the second-most points (6) and goals (5) in the country last week

  • Notched his first collegiate hat trick on Friday in Minnesota’s 6-2 win over No. 16/16 Michigan in Minneapolis

  • Followed the next night with two goals and an assist in the third period, winning a game-high 16 faceoffs, as No. 8/8 Minnesota rallied from three goals down to force overtime

  • Made the most of his last chance at a weekly award, winning a Star for the first time in his fifth season

  • Last Minnesota First Award winner: Justen Close (Feb. 13, 2024)

Second Star

Trey Augustine, Michigan State

Fr. – G – South Lyon, Mich. — U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP)

  • Made a season-high 44 saves to help No. 6/6 Michigan State clinch its first-ever Big Ten Championship with a 5-2 win over No. 4/5 Wisconsin Friday evening in Madison

  • Recorded 80 saves on 85 shots — both national highs for the week — for a .941 save percentage

  • Registered his 20th win of the season as the youngest goaltender in college hockey

  • The World Junior gold medalist secures his fourth Star award of the 2023-24 campaign (2-Firsts, 2-Seconds)

  • Previous Michigan State winner: Gavin O’Connell (Third Star, Feb. 27, 2024)

Third Star

Seamus Casey, Michigan

So. – D – Fort Myers, Fla. — U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP)

  • Scored the overtime game-winner to lift No. 16/16 Michigan past No. 8/8 Minnesota, 6-5 on Saturday at 3M Arena at Mariucci

  • Scored the game’s first goals and added the primary assist on Michigan’s fourth goal to give the Wolverines their 10th win against a ranked team this season

  • Becomes the first Wolverine defenseman to capture a Star award this season

  • The second round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils collects his first conference award

  • Last Michigan award recipient: Jake Barczewski (First Star, Feb. 27, 2024)
