Iowa and Penn State Take Home Weekly Men’s Indoor Track and Field Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 5, 2025.  

Track Athlete of the Week  
Darius Smallwood, Penn State 
Senior – Mid-distance – Pottstown, Pa. – Major: Telecommunications 

• Won both the 800-meter and 600-meter runs at the Penn State National Open 
• Lowered his Big Ten-leading 800-meter time with a 1:46.28, which ranks third in the NCAA this season and second in Penn State history 
• Also recorded the 10^th-fastest indoor 600-meter in collegiate history the next day with a 1:15.49 mark 
• His 600-meter time is currently second in the nation and first in the Big Ten in 2025
• Last Penn State Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week: Cheickna Traeore (Feb. 7, 2024) 

Field Athlete of the Week & Freshman of the Week 
Abraham Vogelsang 
Freshman – Multi-event –Oslo, Norway – Major: Business 

• Won the men’s heptathlon at the Dr. McGuire Invite with a facility record 5,882 points 
• Vogelsang’s heptathlon score ranks second nationally, 11^th in the world this season and is the highest ranked freshman in the event  
• He also moved to third all-time at Iowa in heptathlon En route to his best career total, he won the pole vault, 60-meter hurdles and long jump 
• Last Iowa Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week: Ryan Johnson (Jan. 22, 2025) This marks Vogelsang and Iowa’s first Freshman of the Week award
