USC and Michigan State Secure Weekly Tennis Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – USC senior Peter Makk has been named Player of the Week and Michigan State freshman Matthew Forbes chosen Freshman of the Week as the Big Ten Conference announced its weekly men’s tennis awards on Wednesday. The awards cover competitions that took place between Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

Player of the Week
Peter Makk, USC
Sr. – Budapest, Hungary — Csandi Arpad Sportschool

• Compiled a 4-0 overall record (2-0 singles, 2-0 doubles) in USC’s matches against No. 13 Stanford and California
• Defeated two ranked opponents at No. 1 singles, taking down No. 4 Carl Emil Overbeck of Cal, 6-2, 7-5 and No. 35 Samir Banerjee of Stanford, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2
• Teamed with Tristan Bradley at No. 1 doubles to post a 6-4 win versus No. 84 Alex Chang and Mikey Wright of Cal, giving the Trojans the doubles point
• The four-year starter now has 119 career combined wins (76 singles, 43 doubles)
• Becomes the first USC player to earn a Big Ten Men’s Tennis weekly award

Freshman of the Week
Matthew Forbes, Michigan State
Fr. – Raleigh, N.C. — Laurel Springs

• Recorded a pair of wins at No. 3 singles as No. 16 Michigan State encountered No. 19 Tennessee and unbeaten Clemson on the road
• Won in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) against No. 92 Wissam Abderrahman of Clemson after defeating Tennessee’s Alan Jesudason in a marathon match, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-5)
• Joined teammate Vuk Radjenovic to pin a 6-3 loss on James Newton and Jan Kobierski of Tennessee at No. 3 doubles
• Finished the week with a 3-1 record, the lone loss coming against the nation’s 69th-ranked doubles team
• Becomes the first Spartan to capture the Big Ten Freshman of the Week Award
