Men's Tennis Tournament: Day 1 Recap

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference Men's Tennis Tournament began Thursday with a pair of first round matches. No. 9 seed Penn State began the tourney with a 4-3 upset of No. 8 seed Purdue, which was followed by No. 7 seed Northwestern downing No. 10 seed Wisconsin, 4-1.

Penn State (6-19) will face No. 1 seed Ohio State (27-1) at 9 a.m. CT on Friday while Northwestern (10-17) takes on No. 2 seed Michigan (14-11) at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Penn State, which lost to Purdue 6-1 on Easter Sunday, rebounded from a 2-0 deficit inside the Combe Tennis Center. The match came down to the third set at No. 3 singles, where Nolan Ranger prevailed 7-6 (7-0), 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.

The second match of Thursday's doubleheader took place outdoors at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. After Greyson Casey and Presley Thieneman helped claimed the doubles point at No. 2, Northwestern claimed three of four singles matches to end Wisconsin's season.

Four quarterfinal matches are on tap for Friday.
