Michigan State and UCLA Garner Men’s Tennis Weekly Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Michigan State sophomore Aristotelis Thanos has been named Player of the Week and UCLA freshman Rudy Quan chosen Freshman of the Week as the Big Ten Conference announced its weekly men’s tennis awards on Wednesday. The honors cover competition that took place between Jan. 17-20.

• Helped No. 23 Michigan State to its highest-ranked win in program history with a 5-2 decision over No. 7 Kentucky on Jan. 17 in East Lansing, Mich.
• Secured the match-clinching point against the Wildcats, rallying to defeat 39th-ranked Jaden Weekes, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles
• Clinched match point against Vanderbilt on Jan. 19, winning in straight sets versus Danil Panarin at No. 2 singles in a 5-2 dual match triumph
• Later in the day teamed with Ozan Baris to post a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles against No. 109 Jack Davidson and Brogan Pierce of Western Michigan as the Spartans completed a 3-0 weekend at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center
• A Davis Cup participant, Thanos earns his first Big Ten weekly award

Freshman of the Week
Rudy Quan, UCLA

• Won a pair of matches in UCLA’s dual home opener against No. 16 San Diego
• Defeated USD’s Iiro Vasa at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 7-6 and joined forces with Kaylan Bigun to clinch the doubles point on court three with a 7-6 victory over No. 72 Blake Kasday and Adrien Berrrut
• Helped No. 20 UCLA to a 4-1 road win at UC Irvine on Jan. 17 by defeating reigning Big West Freshman of the Year Andy Nguyen, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 singles
• Currently ranked 50th in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
• Has won five of six singles matches to start collegiate career
• Last UCLA Award winner: Spencer Johnson (Player of the Week) on Oct. 23, 2024
