Big Ten Tournament Update: First Round

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The first day of the Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament saw No. 7 seed Michigan and No. 8 seed Illinois advance with first round victories Thursday at the Auer Tennis Complex.

Illinois opened with a 4-1 win over Oregon, avenging a loss a week ago in Eugene. The 33rd-ranked Fighting Illini (15-10) clinched the match at No. 1 singles on a straight-set win by Kenta Miyoshi, who hours earlier had been named Big Ten Player of the Year. Illinois will meet top seed Ohio State on Friday in a quarterfinals match starting at 9 a.m. ET.

Michigan moved on to the quarters with a 4-0 triumph over Northwestern. Patorn Hanchaikul was a double winner for the 28th-ranked Wolverines (15-11), who will encounter No. 2 seed UCLA on Friday at 4 p.m. ET.

Friday's other quarterfinal pairings feature No. 4 seed Washington versus No. 5 seed Nebraska at 11 a.m. ET and No. 3 seed Michigan State against No. 6 seed USC.
