Michigan and Purdue Garner Big Ten Weekly Award

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Michigan senior Gavin Young and Purdue freshman Soham Purohit have been named Big Ten Conference Men’s Tennis Co-Players of the Week for matches played Feb. 28-March 3.

Co-Player of the Week

Gavin Young, Michigan

Sr. – Apple Valley, Minn. — Eastview

  • Posted a 2-2 overall record, going 2-0 at No. 1 singles, at the Diablo College Tennis Invitational as No. 15 Michigan took on three ranked teams — No. 9 Arizona, No. 23 Arizona State and No. 30 VCU

  • Defeated 9th-ranked Murphy Cassone of Arizona State, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on March 3 for his seventh win this season against a ranked opponent

  • Knocked off No. 73 Mathis Bondaz of VCU, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 to claim match point in the Wolverines’ 4-3 win over the Rams on March 1

  • Rated 14th in singles and 49th in doubles in the ITA Rankings

  • The 2023 All-Big Ten Second Team selection earns his first weekly award

  • Last Michigan winner: Andrew Fenty (April 12, 2023)

Co-Player of the Week

Soham Purohit, Purdue

Fr. – Kirkland, Wash. — Lake Washington

  • Compiled a 4-0 record (2-0 singles, 2-0 doubles) to lead Purdue to a sweep over DePaul and Cleveland State in West Lafayette, Ind.

  • Making his debut at No. 2 singles, recorded straight-set wins over DePaul’s Matteo Iaquinto and Cleveland State’s Mikael Erler

  • Raised his singles record to 11-5 (.688) on the season and improved to 5-0 for single flights No. 2 through No. 4

  • Teamed with Juan David Velasquez to capture a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles, evening the doubles score in both matches

  • Becomes first Boilermaker in seven years to capture Big Ten Player of the Week honors
