Michigan State Sweeps Weekly Men’s Cross Country Awards

Spartans’ Hough and Westphal collect weekly honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its Men’s Cross Country weekly award winners for the week of Sept. 10-17, 2025.  

Athlete of the Week  
Riley Hough, Michigan State 
Junior – Hartland, Mich. – Hartland High School – Major: Kinesiology 

  • Finished first overall in the Spartan Invite/B1G Preview with a time of 23:41.1 in the 8k race 
  • His efforts helped guide MSU to a first-place finish for the second straight season 
  • Last Michigan State Athlete of the Week: Aden Smith (Sept. 28, 2022) 

 
Freshman of the Week 
Thomas Westphal, Michigan State 
Freshman – Fairhaven, Mich. – New Baltimore Anchor Bay High School – Major: Undecided 

  • Finished seventh with a time of 23:57.8 at the Spartan Invite/B1G Preview 
  • Impressed in his collegiate debut and help lead the Spartans to a first-place finish 
  • This marks Michigan State’s first men’s cross country Freshman of the Week award
