<div class="payload-richtext">Michigan cut down the nets Monday night in Indianapolis, beating UConn 69-63 to win the 2026 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The score will live in program history, and so will the season: 37 wins, a Big Ten title, and the school’s first national championship since 1989.But for this Michigan team, the final result only told part of the story.This championship was not just about one game or one shining moment. It was about the identity the Wolverines built over the course of the season. They won with talent, yes. But they also won with sacrifice, defensive grit, and a locker room culture that never flinched when the game got messy.And on the biggest stage, that identity showed up again.Michigan did not shoot the ball particularly well in the title game. The offense was uneven. UConn pushed. The pressure kept rising. Still, the Wolverines never lost control of themselves. They defended, rebounded, communicated, and made the winning plays late. It was not always pretty. It was championship basketball.That mentality had defined Michigan all season.“We’ve been finding ways to get wins all year,” Yaxel Lendeborg said after the game. “We started off really, really bad all year offensively. Our defense was the reason we won most of our games. Today was the same thing. We’ve got a deep team and started getting more defensive rebounds and making the tough plays to get a win.”

 That quote captured the night and, really, the season. Michigan did not need perfect offense to be dangerous. The Wolverines trusted their defense. They trusted their depth. Most of all, they trusted each other.Roddy Gayle Jr. pointed to that connectedness when he described the challenge of facing UConn.“You can’t relax defensively,” Gayle said. “I just feel like our physicality and our ability to communicate no matter what, and recover for each other, is really big.”That may be the simplest way to explain why this team reached the mountaintop. Michigan had stars, but it never felt like a collection of individuals. It felt like a group constantly covering for one another, lifting one another, and playing for something bigger than a box score.Elliot Cadeau, who led Michigan with 19 points and was named the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, said it plainly as the celebration began.“Nobody cared about stats the whole season,” Cadeau said. “Nobody cared about nothing but winning. I’m just glad to be a part of that.”That selfless approach became the team’s signature. In an era when college basketball can feel transactional, Michigan built something that looked and sounded different. The Wolverines were talented enough to win big, but their culture is what made them champions.Even in the emotional rush of the confetti-filled aftermath, players kept returning to the same themes: belief, sacrifice, and perseverance.For Will Tschetter, the title carried the weight of everything it took to stay the course.“I’m like a living testament to that saying, [those who stay will be champions],” Tschetter said. “You can’t even put it into words. All the things behind the scenes that guys like Nimari [Burnett] and I had to go through to stick with the track and really believe that was something that could happen. It was tough at times. We had to rely on each other.”That reliance became the backbone of the team. Michigan was not formed overnight. It was tested, sharpened, and strengthened through adversity. The final product was a roster that believed it could handle anything because it already had.True freshman Trey McKenney spoke to what the moment meant personally, but also to what it revealed about the team.“This is a dream come true,” McKenney said. “For the things that we went through all season, for our team, as talented as we were, to go through a lot of stuff, it just says a lot about our team. I’m just really happy that we were able to end this thing out the right way, like we planned it.”

 Aday Mara echoed that emotion, focusing on the work behind the celebration.“I think I’m going to need a couple days to realize what we did,” Mara said. “I’m just super happy for everyone on the team. It was the work that we all put in. The extra hours, the sacrifice that we did for this. It’s unbelievable.”And Cadeau’s perspective may have been the most personal of all. One year after dealing with doubt, he stood at center court as the tournament’s most outstanding player and a national champion.“I’m just so proud of myself, where I came from,” Cadeau said. “Last year I was really down on myself, a lot of people doubted me, and I’m just so proud of myself for me to be able to say I was the most outstanding player and win a National Championship.”His story mirrored Michigan’s rise. Growth did not happen all at once. It happened steadily so that the Wolverines were ready under the brightest lights.

 Head coach Dusty May offered one of the most fitting descriptions of that development.“It was like bamboo,” May said. “We didn’t feel like the bamboo was just going to shoot to the sky... but it did, and then it happens quickly where we’re playing at that level, and that’s typically when it gets more difficult. ... For them not to waver on how they continued to give, to me that’s probably the hardest part and most rewarding thing that these guys did.”Michigan’s championship was not built solely on what its players could do. It was built on what they were willing to give up. Shots. Credit. Comfort. Ego. The Wolverines kept choosing the harder, better path. That is why, when the title game turned into a grind, they looked ready for it.May also made sure to frame the moment in a larger history, connecting this team to everyone who came before it.“First of all, I want to thank all the people that poured in to everyone in our locker room,” May said. “We’re not here without the love, support and coaching from everybody before us. And I want to shout out all of the former Michigan players — this one is for them.”

 That sense of legacy was everywhere Monday night. Michigan was not just winning a championship. It was returning the program to the top of the sport and adding a new chapter alongside the 1988-89 title team.Outside voices noticed the manner in which the Wolverines did it, too. TBS commentator Grant Hill put it well: Michigan proved it could win in multiple ways.“They showed they can win pretty,” Hill said. “But they also showed they can win when the game is ugly. And that’s the sign of a champion.”This team had enough offensive firepower to thrill, but its ultimate statement came in a game that demanded maturity and toughness. The Wolverines answered with poise.So how should this team be remembered?Gayle did not hesitate.“I want it to be remembered as the best ever,” he said. “I think that’s just what we strived for. Our biggest key was having people watch us and think this was a selfless team, a team that just played for each other. That was kind of our priority.”That may be the lasting image of Michigan’s 2026 title run. Not just the trophy. Not just the confetti. Not just the nets. <div class="payload-richtext">ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has appointed Chris McIntosh, formerly the Director of Athletics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as Deputy Commissioner for Strategy, Commissioner Tony Petitti announced Monday. In the newly created role, McIntosh will advise the Commissioner and lead overall strategy development for the conference. He will begin his role officially on May 1, 2026. “As intercollegiate athletics continues to change at an unprecedented pace, it is essential for the Big Ten Conference to maintain its role as a national leader in academic and athletic excellence,” said Petitti. “To ensure we support our 18 institutions at the highest level possible, it is important to reinforce our leadership team with additional strategic experience.  We are excited to add Chris at such a transformational time and know his experience as an athletics director, administrator and student-athlete in the Big Ten will serve him well in this role.” McIntosh has served as the Director of Athletics at Wisconsin since 2021, during which the Badgers have claimed 13 conference championships, four team national championships and five individual NCAA champions. UW student-athletes also have excelled academically, with a 94% Graduation Success Rate in successive years, marking the eighth-consecutive year the Badgers have scored 90 percent or higher. McIntosh ushered the Badgers into a new era of college athletics, overseeing the largest capital project in Wisconsin Athletics history with the Kellner Family Athletic Center and establishing Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) programming and support. McIntosh also has served as the Big Ten’s representative on the NCAA’s Football Sport Oversight Committee. “I have been a part of the Big Ten Conference as a student-athlete, administrator, and Athletic Director since arriving at Wisconsin in 1996. The opportunity to join Commissioner Petitti’s leadership team and help guide the Conference and its institutions toward a stronger future is an honor,” said McIntosh. Prior to being named Director of Athletics, McIntosh served as the Deputy Director of Athletics at Wisconsin (2017-2021), overseeing day-to-day operations of the department, and as Associate Athletics Director for Business Development (2016-2017) and Director of Business Development (2014-2016). Before joining the Badgers, McIntosh was involved in numerous business endeavors after he concluded his playing career in the National Football League. McIntosh was a consensus All-American offensive tackle at Wisconsin and led the Badgers to back-to-back Big Ten and Rose Bowl championships in 1998 and 1999, and was named an Outland Trophy finalist in 1999. An Academic All-Big Ten honoree, he was drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. McIntosh earned an undergraduate degree from UW-Madison and holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy analysis.</div>

The Bruins played the stoutest defense in NCAA Tournament Championship Game history, becoming the first team – men's or women's – to hold its opponents to under 30.0% shooting overall and under 15.0% from three in a national title game. And they did it against Dawn Staley and her developing dynasty.

 All season long, head coach Cori Close attributed the Bruins' success to their character and willingness to commit to their mission of winning an NCAA title. And now that they've done it?"It's beyond my wildest dreams," Close said. "It's meaningful because of the people I've gotten to share it with. All year we've been saying, 'talent is our floor, but our character will determine our ceiling,' and I'm just so confident in their character. That's what determined how they played today."That character shined on the biggest stage. The Bruins played completely selfless basketball with five players finishing in double figures. It felt as though every time the Gamecocks found an answer for one player, another responded, whether it was Lauren Betts, Gianna Kneepkens, Angela Dugalic, or Kiki Rice. As Holly Rowe commented post-game, "it took a little bit of everyone." It was senior Gabriela Jaquez that led the way for the Bruins, tallying 21 points in the championship game."We all set out for a goal," Jaquez said. "We imagined this moment... and I'm just so, so proud. This being the last time I'm wearing this uniform is making me emotional too, but to finish like this is everything... What a way to end it."

 Jaquez finishes her career with 124 wins, making her the winningest player to ever wear the UCLA uniform. Last year, Jaquez told the team they needed to look in the mirror and decide who they wanted to be. This year? "We decided to be national champions," she said.Lauren Betts was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, finishing her career with a program-record 278 points in the NCAA Tournament. She had a physical battle at the post and needed to overcome a throat issue early in the game. "I do it for my teammates," Betts said.The most emotional moment came when a teary-eyed Holly Rowe asked Betts about her development off the court and her courage to share her struggles with mental health. "Basketball has given me the platform to change peoples' lives," Betts said. "I was put on this Earth not just to score points, but to help people. I've [shared] my journey because other people experience the same thing, and I'm always going to speak my truth because I know it's going to help people."

The Nittany Lion was down 3-1 after the first period, but bounced back with a takedown (second period) and an escape (third period) to force overtime. That's when Valencia came through with the takedown at 1:28.<h3>Defending champ finishes second</h3>No. 5 seed Landon Robideau (OKST) defeated defending NCAA Champion and No. 2 seed Antrell Taylor (Nebraska) to take the title at 157.  </a>.<h3>Mesenbrink's reign continues</h3>The Big Ten's first 2026 individual champion came courtesy of No. 1 seed Mitchell Mesenbrink (Penn State) at 165. In a championship rematch against No. 3 seed Mikey Caliendo (Iowa), Mesenbrink mounted five takedowns in a 20-4 TF victory to improve to 9-0 against Caliendo and take home the belt. Mesenbrink was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler and Most Dominant Wrestler of the Championships.<h3>Penn State's second gold</h3>The bout at 174 was an exhaustive test of strength, as No. 1 seed Levi Haines (Penn State) edged out No. 3 seed Christopher Minto (Nebraska) in a tight 2-1 decision. Each wrestler recorded only an escape, but a second-period stalling penalty against the Husker proved the difference.<h3>McEnelly gets his moment</h3>

 </a>.<h3>Raising the Barr</h3>No. 1 seed Josh Barr (Penn State) defeated No. 7 seed Cody Merrill (OKST) to not only win the individual NCAA title at 197, but also push the Nittany Lions' team score to 177.5, which broke the NCAA-record mark they set last season.Barr had won every match by bonus points heading into the title bout, so we were all on the edge of our seats when it was just 3-2 at the end of the second period. But Barr came through with a clutch reversal in the third period, and a Cowboy penalty lifted him to the 6-3 decision.<h3>Lightning Luke strikes again</h3>No. 1 seed Luke Lilledahl (Penn State) escaped a tight 2-1 bout against No. 10 seed Marc-Anthony McGowan (Princeton). The wrestlers traded escapes before a stalling call gave Lilledahl the edge he needed to take another belt back to State College.<h3>Davino places second</h3>No. 1 seed Jax Forrest (OKST) became the first wrestler all season to take down No. 2 seed Ben Davino (Ohio State), and it proved the difference in the 5-2 championship bout.<h2>Decades of Supremacy</h2>The Big Ten has now won <a href="https://x.com/B1GWrestling/status/2035530547703710109" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">

Four Big Ten Players Named Hobey Baker Finalists

<div class="payload-richtext">No. 7 seed Purdue is your 2026 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament Champion after defeating No. 1 seed Michigan in the championship game of the TIAA Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament. The Boilers become just the second Big Ten team (and third team overall) to defeat the defending tournament champions this season after claiming their third tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.The first half reminded us all why we love March basketball. There were five lead changes and four ties, and neither squad took a lead larger than six points at any time in the half. Every single basket came with a roar and a standing ovation as the teams threw punches early and often. Trey Kaufman-Renn led Purdue on a 9-0 run that put the Boilers ahead with just 1:26 remaining in the first period, but Aday Mara and Elliot Cadeau responded immediately for the Wolverines to tie the game at 38 at halftime.Whatever head coach Matt Painter said to his Boilermaker crew at the break? Worked. Purdue came out of the locker room full steam ahead, opening scoring with a 7-0 run in the second half and never trailed the rest of the way. The Wolverines persisted with big pushes from Yaxel Lendeborg (20 points), Mara (14 points, seven rebounds), and Cadeau (10 points, 10 assists), but every time there was a hint of Michigan momentum, Purdue responded. The Boilermaker faithful were on their feet for the final minute, clapping and cheering along with the rest of the fans back in West Lafayette (and around the nation).Braden Smith was named the Jim and Kitty Delany Most Outstanding Player after finishing the championship game with 14 points and 11 assists. Oscar Cluff led the Boilers in scoring with 21 points, followed by Kaufman-Renn (20 points), and Fletcher Loyer (14 points).Smith heads into the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament just two assists away from breaking the NCAA's all-time career record. The Boilers came out blazing, opening with a 15-2 run fueled by Fletcher Loyer’s scoring, but UCLA quickly countered with a 7-0 spurt to stay within striking distance. Despite the Bruins tying the game, Purdue’s Trey Kaufman-Renn and Omer Mayer helped the Boilers maintain a 34-27 halftime lead.The second half was a back-and-forth battle, with Loyer’s back-to-back triples giving Purdue early momentum. UCLA, led by Eric Dailey Jr. and Skyy Clark, chipped away at the lead with multiple runs, including a 9-0 surge that brought them within one late in the game. But man, those last three came when it counted.The No. 5 seed Wisconsin Badgers mounted a 17-2, second-half run behind five consecutive triples from Austin Rapp to erase a 15-point deficit and tie the game. Elliot Cadeau and Nick Boyd each threw punches, burying threes of their own to knot the score at 65 with 29 seconds left.Cadeau dribbled to the right corner to draw the defense and found Lendeborg open beyond the arc. The Big Ten Player of the Year pulled up, and the arena went silent... before the game-winning shot fell with just four tenths of a second left on the clock.Boyd threw up a 3/4-court heave, but it skewed right. Boyd scored 38 points, which is second all-time in Big Ten Tournament history and broke the Wisconsin tournament record set just yesterday by Blackwell (34). The night, however, belonged to Donovan Dent and his record-breaking performance.With his final rebound, UCLA guard Donovan Dent became the first player ever in Big Ten Tournament history to post a triple-double, recording 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists in the victory. The last time that any player recorded a triple-double in a major conference tournament was back in 2003 in the Big 12 Tournament, and it's only happened three times since 1996-97.
