Michigan's Lindsey Gallo Named Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year

PARK RIDGE, IL - Fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo of Michigan garnered Big Ten Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year accolades, while Minnesota's Liz Roehrig took home Freshman of the Year honors, Conference officials announced today. Wolverines' head coach James Henry earned Coach of the Year honors. The individual postseason awards were determined by a vote of the League's track and field coaches.

Gallo was also named Big Ten Athlete of the Championships after capturing three individual titles at the Conference meet, en route to the Wolverines' third Big Ten indoor title in four years. The Freehold, N.J., native won her third individual League title when she crossed in the 3,000-meter run with a first-place time of 9:27.26. She continued her outstanding showing in the mile run with a top time of 4:42.42 and recorded a personal best in the 5,000-meter run (16:28.51).

Roehrig earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year laurels after a strong rookie campaign for the Golden Gophers. The Chilton, Wis., native shattered Minnesota's school record in her first-ever pentathlon competition when she scored 3,891 points to finish as runner-up in the gold division of the Northern Iowa Invitational at the end of January. At the Big Ten Indoor Championships, the freshman won the pentathlon shot put event with a top throw of 38-9.50, tied for first in the high jump portion of the contest with a jump of 5-8.75 and came in second in the long jump by marking 18-8. Roehrig claimed the title with 3,801 points.

Henry collected his fifth career Big Ten Indoor Coach of the Year award and second in the last three years as he guided his team to its seventh indoor team title overall.

The Conference office also announced honorees from each team for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Honorees for women's indoor track and field are Illinois' Yvonne Mensah, Indiana's Lorian Price, Iowa's Peaches Roach, Michigan's Sierra Hauser-Price, Michigan State's Cynetheia Price, Minnesota's Kadian Douglas, Ohio State's Colleen Farrell, Penn State's Kate Johnston, Purdue's Courtney Magnuson and Wisconsin's Courtney Bauer.

These 10 student-athletes are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the Conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
