Penn State’s Starocci, USC’s Watkins Named Big Ten Athletes of the Year (071025)

<div class="payload-richtext">ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference is celebrating its 111th class of recipients who earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor from their respective institutions during the 2024-25 academic year. Established in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference’s most prestigious award. It was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics. The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their collegiate career. This year’s class comprised student-athletes from 15 sports. Big Ten schools currently feature more than 11,000 student-athletes, but only 36 earn the award on an annual basis. Since the Big Ten Medal of Honor was first presented more than a century ago, just over 1,680 student-athletes have earned this unique distinction. Those names are on permanent display at the Big Ten Office in Rosemont. Big Ten Conference Recognizes 111th Medal of Honor Class

<div class="payload-richtext">EVANSTON, Ill. - Penn State won the 2025 Big Ten Wrestling Championships title on Sunday with a team score of 181.5. The Nittany Lions earned their ninth Big Ten Championship crown overall and third consecutive title. Penn State won five individual titles from Luke Lilledahl (125), Tyler Kasak (157), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Levi Haines (174) and Carter Starocci (184).Nebraska finished in second place with 137 points, followed by third-place Iowa with 112 points. Minnesota claimed fourth place with 108.5 points and Illinois rounded out the top five with 105.5 points.  Penn State’s Starocci was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Year, Minnesota’s Gable Steveson was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Championships, while teammate Max McEnelly received the Big Ten Freshman of the Year honor. Cael Sanderson was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year and ninth overall.  Penn State freshman Lilledahl claimed the Big Ten Championship at 125 pounds, following a 4-3 decision against Nebraska’s Caleb Smith. At 133 pounds, Illinois’ Lucas Byrd earned his first-ever championship, pinning (3:16) Drake Ayala of Iowa.  At 141 pounds, Nebraska’s Brock Hardy claimed first place with a fall (1:59) over Minnesota’s Vance Vombaur. Huskers’ Ridge Lovett topped Michigan’s Austin Gomez, 1-0, to successfully defend his 149-pound title. At 157, Kasak earned a 12-2 major decision over Ohio State’s Brandon Cannon to take home the belt.   Mesenbrink successfully defended his title at 165 with a 4-1 decision against Iowa’s Mike Caliendo. Haines became a three-time Big Ten champion following a 12-1 major decision over Nebraska’s Lenny Pinto at 174 pounds. Nittany Lion teammate Starocci also became a three-time Big Ten Champion with an 8-5 sudden victory against Minnesota’s Max McEnelly at 184.Jacob Cardenas became Michigan’s first champion at 197 since 2021 with the 4-2 upset decision against Iowa’s Stephen Buchanan. <div class="payload-richtext">ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced the preliminary seeds for the 2025 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, which are set for March 8-9 at Northwestern. Five schools boast at least one top-seeded wrestler, with Penn State leading the way with five No. 1 seeds.The pre-seeds, as voted on by the conference’s coaches, rank 14 starters in all 10 weight classes. The Nittany Lions have five top-seeded wrestlers, with 141-pounder Beau Bartlett, 149-pounder Shayne Van Ness, 165-pounder Mitchell Mesenbrink, 174-pounder Levi Haines and 184-pounder Carter Starocci. Jackie Robinson embodies this award and our goal to honor student-athletes who positively impact others."Each Big Ten member-institution can nominate two student-athletes, one male and one female, from their respective schools. The Big Ten Conference will select two Jackie Robinson Community & Impact award winners, from the 36 nominations, who will be announced by the Big Ten Conference this spring. All remaining nominees will be recognized with individual awards for their contributions to their local communities. The Big Ten Conference’s commitment to athletics, academics and service goes back to the conference’s founding. Coupling the academic goals set forth by leaders of the charter members of the conference with their steadfast commitment to athletics, the conference instituted the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1915, the first award to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on intercollegiate athletics. It is awarded annually by each member institution to one male and one female student of the graduating class who has attained the greatest proficiency in scholarship and athletics.In June of 2020 the conference launched the Big Ten Equality Coalition. This group, which features student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, chancellors, presidents and other members, has a stated goal of seeking tangible ways to actively and constructively combat racism and hate around the world, while also empowering student-athletes to express their rights to free speech and peaceful protest. An important initiative resulting from conversations initiated by the coalition was the Big Ten Voter Registration Initiative.In recent years, several delegations of conference student-athletes and administrators have traveled to Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, for an immersive civil rights educational experience entitled: “Big Life Series: Selma to Montgomery.” The visit to one of the key centers of the civil rights movement was highlighted by marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to learn more about the profound impact that young people had on the civil rights movement.Additionally, the Big Ten Conference is dedicated to making a lasting impact on the communities where its major events are held hosting sports clinics, renovating recreation centers, and giving elementary-aged children a behind-the-scenes experience with major Big Ten events. In all cases the conference focuses on creating meaningful improvements aimed at leaving each location better than it was found. Most recently, the Big Ten collaborated with the College Football Playoff Foundation, local sports organizations and local school districts to enhance spaces for teachers and children while providing additional educational and athletic opportunities for children.As Jackie Robison famously said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."</div>

 </a> ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced the dates and opponents for the 2024-25 wrestling season on Tuesday. The schedule features eight conference duals for all 14 Big Ten programs and concludes with the 2025 Big Ten Wrestling Championships in March.   Illinois and Indiana will begin the Big Ten season with a dual on Dec. 6, with the 12 remaining programs starting Big Ten action Jan. 10-12. Reigning National and Big Ten Champion Penn State will begin the 2024-25 conference season at home against Michigan State. The final regular-season conference dual will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23, with Purdue playing host to Nebraska.  The 2025 Big Ten Wrestling Championships will take place over two days with the first-round, quarterfinal, semifinal and wrestleback matches taking place during Sessions I and II, consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches during Session III and the first-, third- and fifth-place matches highlighting Session IV.  The complete 2024-25 Big Ten Wrestling schedule can be found in the link above. A little more than a year later, on August 4, 2023, the COP/C voted unanimously once more to admit the University of Oregon and the University of Washington, with all four schools joining the Conference on August 2, 2024.Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are all members of the Association of American Universities, an organization of American research institutions devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. Today, they also become members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, where Big Ten institutions lead the nation with more than 75,000 instructional staff, 810,000 students, $17.4 billion in annual research expenditures, and 145 million library volumes, representing 25 percent of all print titles in North America. Eight from Big Ten Earn Men's At-Large Academic All-America Laurels

<div class="payload-richtext">ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients on Wednesday, recognizing two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten member institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program. These honorees will be awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements.This year’s recipients, who represent 15 different sports, will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines. Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarships. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average (GPA), demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.The Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student’s postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. Big Ten Conference Announces 2024 Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients

<div class="payload-richtext">ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference is celebrating its 110th class of recipients who earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor from their respective institutions during the 2023-24 academic year. Established in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference’s most prestigious award. It was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics. The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their collegiate career. This year’s class comprised student-athletes from 17 sports. Big Ten schools currently feature more than 9,800 student-athletes, but only 28 earn the award on an annual basis. Since the Big Ten Medal of Honor was first presented more than a century ago, just over 1,650 student-athletes have earned this unique distinction. Those names are on display at the Big Ten Office in Rosemont. NCAA and Autonomy Conferences Agree on Settlement

<div class="payload-richtext">KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Penn State won the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo., capturing the 11th NCAA wrestling title in school history and third straight. The Nittany Lions’ national championship marked the 17th straight year that a Big Ten school has claimed the NCAA Championship.Penn State won the team title with 172.5 points, 100 points ahead of second place Cornell. Michigan was third with 71 points, Iowa fifth with 67 points, Ohio State eighth with 62 points and Nebraska ninth with 60.5 points. Penn State’s 172.5 points set a new NCAA record, breaking the previous mark of 170 set by Iowa in 1997. The Nittany Lions also broke the margin of victory record, winning by 100 points, breaking the previous record of 73.75 set in 1986 by Iowa.Five Big Ten wrestlers claimed individual titles at the NCAA Championships. Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet was the 285-pound champion, while Levi Haines capped his undefeated season with a 157-pound title, Carter Starocci won the 174-pound title, marking his fourth NCAA Championship title and Aaron Brooks also won his fourth NCAA crown at 197 pounds. The Big Ten is sending 96 wrestlers, including 47 top-15 seeded wrestlers and six No. 1 seeds, across the 10 weight classes.The conference is sending at least eight wrestlers in all 10 weight classes, including eight in the 184- and 197-pound weight classes, nine in the 133-, 174- and 285-pound weight classes, 10 in the 125-, 149- and 157-pound weight classes, 11 in the 165- pound wight class and 12 in the 141-pound weight class.The Big Ten boasts a top-seeded wrestler in six weight classes this year – Penn State's Braeden Davis (125), Levi Haines (157), Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet (285), Ohio State’s Jesse Mendez (141) and Nebraska’s Ridge Lovett (149).Six Big Ten schools have claimed NCAA titles, led by Iowa with 24. Penn State won its 10th national championship in 2023, the program’s ninth title in the last 11 years. Minnesota follows with three national titles, while Indiana, Michigan State and Ohio State own one title each. Big Ten Recognizes Winter Academic All-Big Ten Honorees

 </a>COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Penn State won the 2024 Big Ten Wrestling Championships title on Sunday with a team score of 170.5. The Nittany Lions earned their eighth Big Ten Championship crown overall and second consecutive title. Penn State won five individual titles from Braeden Davis (125), Levi Haines (157), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet (285).  Michigan finished in second place with 123.5 points, followed by third-place Nebraska with 118 points. Iowa claimed fourth place with 110.5 points and Ohio State rounded out the top five with 89 points.  Penn State’s Aaron Brooks was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Year and the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Championships, while teammate Mitchell Mesenbrink received the Big Ten Freshman of the Year honor. Cael Sanderson was named Big Ten coach of the Year for the second consecutive year and eighth overall.  Penn State freshman Braeden Davis claimed the Big Ten Championship at 125 pounds, following an 8-1 decision over Minnesota’s Patrick McKee. At 133 pounds, Rutgers' Dylan Shawver earned his first-ever Championship with a 23-8 tech fall win over Michigan’s Dylan Ragusin.  At 141 pounds, Jesse Mendez claimed first place with a 4-1 decision over Penn State’s Beau Bartlett. Nebraska’s Ridge Lovett topped Michigan’s Austin Gomez, 5-4, to win the 149-pound title. At 157, Levi Haines earned a 4-1 sudden victory vs. Michigan’s Will Lewan for his second-straight 157-pound title.  Mesenbrink earned the title at 165 in a 13-11 comeback victory over reigning Big Ten Champion Dean Hamiti of Wisconsin. Edmond Ruth of Illinois earned the Big Ten title at 174 pounds.  At 184, Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota earned an 8-1 sudden victory over Penn State’s Bernie Truax, Salazar’s first title of his career.  Now a four-time Big Ten Champion, Brooks earned a 19-3 tech fall win over Iowa’s Zach Glazier to win the title at 197.
