Women's soccer season heats up with rivalry wins and a ranked weekend contest
Rivalry wins headlined a busy Thursday night in Big Ten Women’s Soccer. Let’s take a look at some of the notable results:
Oregon Wallops In-State Rivals
The Ducks are off to their best start in 10 years, and they kept things rolling with a dominant 6-0 victory over rival Oregon State. The six goals are the most scored in the history of the series. Ellie Felt’s PK goal in the 27th minute broke a scoreless tie… and opened the floodgates. Oregon scored five more times in the next 43 minutes, including one more from Felt and a brace from Logan Russo. Read the recap .
Iowa Grabs a Cy-Hawk Victory
Kylie Cino scored in the fourth minute of the contest to give Iowa an early 1-0 lead over rival Iowa State. That proved to be the difference as the Hawkeyes dominated possession, outshooting the Cyclones 26-2. Jada Grove added an insurance goal for Iowa, and Braelynn Galt earned her third shoutout of the young season. Hear from the Hawkeyes .
Michigan Ties with No. 25 Notre Dame
The Wolverines came from behind to earn a draw with Notre Dame in Ann Arbor. Down 1-0, Adi Walick converted on a penalty kick to even things in the 56th minute. The Wolverine defense held the Fighting Irish scoreless the rest of the way. More here .
No. 17 UCLA Falls to No. 1
The Bruins traveled upstate to face top-ranked Stanford and were shut out 3-0. Keeper Daphne Nakfoor stood tall in goal, making eight saves on the night — one short of her career-high. UCLA will look to rebound Sunday against Santa Clara. More from UCLA .
Preview: Another Test for the Spartans
Michigan State has started the season as hot as any team in the country, catapulting to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll after a signature win over North Carolina in Chapel Hill. But Thursday night brought the first bump in the road for the Spartans. Despite outshooting Eastern Michigan 22-0, MSU had to settle for a 0-0 draw at home against the Eagles.
The Spartans won’t have to wait long to try and put that behind them, as their aggressive non-conference schedule will see them host No. 12 Colorado in East Lansing on Sunday (11 a.m. ET on Big Ten Network). The Buffaloes are led by the Leyba sisters: Hope, who led the NCAA with 22 goals last season, and Faith, who earned All-American honors on defense a year ago. Standout striker Kennedy Bell, already with three goals, and All-American Kayla Briggs will look to lead the Spartans back into the win column. Expect a physical battle in the midfield that hinges on set-piece execution and clinical finishing.
