Spartans make it a sweep in L.A. and the Buckeyes and Huskies stay hot
After one week of Big Ten play in the books, three Big Ten teams still hold an undefeated overall record this season.
Michigan State wins top-20 tilt against UCLA
The top two teams in the Big Ten preseason coaches’ poll squared off on Sunday, and one goal was all No. 5 Michigan State needed to pull out the victory against No. 16 UCLA. Senior Kayla Briggs scored her fifth goal of the season just seven minutes into the match, and the Spartans made it stick thanks to stifling defense combined with relentless offensive pressure. Michigan State outshot the Bruins 13-2 (including 10-0 in the second half) and earned 15 corner kicks to the Bruins’ four.
The win gives the Spartans their third ranked win of the season and keeps them unbeaten on the season at 6-0-2. The Michigan State recap .
Ohio State and Washington also stay undefeated
No. 6 Ohio State improved to 6-0-1 after posting a 3-0 shutout of Indiana in Bloomington. Senior Amanda Schlueter notched her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season to lead the Buckeyes to the victory, while goalkeepers Peighton Northrup and Lizzie Rozmajzl combined for the clean sheet. Defending Big Ten regular season and tournament champion Washington (ranked 12th) continues to pick up where it left off last year, moving to 7-0-1 with a 1-0 win over Rutgers Sunday. Jadyn Holdenried converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute and the stingy Huskies defense kept the Scarlet Knights to just two shots on goal for the match. Third year goalkeeper Tanner Ijams stopped both of those to record her Big Ten-leading fifth shutout of the season. More from Seattle .
Another top-20 matchup on deck
The Buckeyes put their unbeaten record on the line again on Thursday when they visit the Bruins in L.A. (9 p.m. ET on B1G+). After seeing its three-game win streak snapped by Michigan State, UCLA will be looking to get back in the win column. That won’t come easy against an Ohio State squad that has allowed only two goals – the fewest in the Big Ten – in seven contests.
