Michigan and UCLA Claim Women’s Tennis Weekly Awards

Bruins’ Wagle and Wolverines’ Bernales earn women’s tennis weekly recognition

Player of the Week 
Elise Wagle, UCLA 
Sr. – Niskayuna, N.Y. – Laurel Springs School – Major: Economics  

  • Posted a 1-0 singles record and a 1-0 doubles mark to help UCLA defeat No. 18 California, 4-2  

  • Contributed two clinching wins, helping put the match’s first and last points on the scoreboard 

  • Making her debut on the No. 2 singles court, Wagle outlasted No. 63 Lan Mi, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 to seal the victory  

  • Playing alongside teammate Bianca Fernandez for the first time, the duo knocked off No. 48 Mi/Berta Passola Folch, 6-4, in the deciding doubles contest on court three  

  • Last UCLA Player of the Week: Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer (Nov. 13, 2024) 

 

Freshman of the Week 
Jessica Bernales, Michigan 
Las Vegas, Nev. – Odyssey Charter School – Major: Undeclared  

  • Went 2-0 in singles as Michigan picked up wins at No. 5 Virginia and No. 21 Florida 

  • Against the Cavaliers, Bernales knocked off No. 94 Martina Genis Salas, 6-3, 6-3, for Michigan’s third point of the afternoon 

  • Against Virginia, she and Piper Charney held a 6-5 lead over No. 2 Elaine Chervinsky/Melanie Collard in doubles before the match was abandoned 

  • Against No. 21 Florida, Bernales picked up a win over Noémie Oliveras, 6-4, 6-4 as Michigan recorded a 7-0 shutout win 

  • Teamed up with Piper Charney again at No. 1 doubles to clinch the match's first point with a 7-5 win over Alicia Dudeney/Bente Spee 

  • Last Michigan Freshman of the Week: Emily Sartz-Lunde (Jan. 15, 2025)
