Michigan, Minnesota Share Women’s Tennis Weekly Award

Wolverines’ Fliegner and Gophers’ Schmitz selected as this week’s honorees

Co-Player of the Week 

Julia Fliegner, Michigan 

Jr. – Birmingham, Mich. – Detroit Country Day – Major: Business Administration 

  • Helped No. 2 Michigan to a 4-2 win over then-No. 8 Pepperdine on Sunday, knocking off sixth-ranked Savannah Broadus at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3, pulling Michigan even in the team match at 1-1 

  • Handed Broadus her second dual-match loss of the season 

  • Moved to 5-2 on the season at the No. 2 singles flight and 17-9 overall  

  • Earns her second Player of the Week honor this season  

  • Last Michigan Player of the Week: Gala Mesochoritou (Feb. 28, 2024) 

Co-Player of the Week 

Aiva Schmitz, Minnesota    

So. – New Auburn, Wis.– Kaiserslautern High School – Major: Biochemistry  

  • Helped Minnesota to a 2-0 Big Ten opening weekend against Indiana and then-No. 48 Purdue, securing the winning point for the Golden Gophers in each match 

  • Topped Indiana’s Li Hsin Lin at No. 3 singles, clinching the match in a third set tiebreaker to win 7-5, 6(4)-7(7), 7(7)-6(1) 

  • Defeated Purdue’s Juana Larranaga, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and also won at No. 3 doubles with Sofia Pizzoni (6-2) 

  • The Gophers start 2-0 in Big Ten play for the first time since 2020 

  • Last Minnesota Player of the Week: Cami Frei (March 10, 2020)
