It is the same pitch where NU won its 2021 championship.The second-ranked Wildcats (23-1) scored all their goals in the first half, including three off penalty corners, to break the game open. Third-ranked Saint Joseph’s (20-4) was making its first NCAA Final appearance (in any team sport) in school history.Maddie Zimmer and Ilse Tromp scored twice as part of five-point efforts while Lauren Hunter added three assists. Goaltender Annabel Skubisz recorded her 37th career shutout.“This team was special and played every game like it was their last and didn’t take anyone lightly,” said NU Head Coach Tracey Fuchs.Northwestern, which was making its fourth-straight finals appearance, finished with a 23-1 record, setting a program record for victories in a season.Ashley Sessa, Lauren Wadas, Tromp and Zimmer were named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team with Zimmer being chosen the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.Northwestern’s victory was the 12th field hockey title for a Big Ten institution.

The Wildcats benefited from a third-period defensive save by Ilse Tromp and Ashley Sessa’s game-winning goal setup by Maddie Zimmer with 10 minutes left in regulation.Northwestern (22-1) will meet No. 4 seed Saint Joseph’s (20-3) — which upset top-ranked North Carolina in the other semifinal — in the NCAA Championship Game Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET at Phyllis Ocker Field. The game will be televised by ESPNU.NU will be playing in its fourth-straight NCAA Final, becoming the first time to do so since North Carolina in 2012. The Wildcats last won a national championship in 2021, on the same field they will be playing on Sunday.

Friday’s first semifinal features third-ranked Saint Joseph’s (19-3) versus top-ranked North Carolina (20-0) at 12 p.m. ET. ESPN+ will carry both games.Massachusetts and Northwestern will be meeting for the second time this season. The Wildcats defeated the Minutewomen, 6-1, on Sept. 1 in Evanston, Ill.Northwestern earned a trip to the NCAA semifinals with a 3-2 overtime win against eighth-ranked Virginia in a NCAA Second Round match Sunday at Lakeside Field. Lauren Wadas scored 2:20 into overtime, marking the second-straight year she has scored the game-winner in the regional final.Coach Tracey Fuchs’ squad is seeking its fourth-straight trip to the championship game, having previously winning a national title in 2021 in Ann Arbor.

Northwestern Earns Spot in NCAA Field Hockey Semifinals

Olivia Bent-Cole and Ilse Tromp had two goals each while Ashley Sessa had a five-point day (goal, three assists). The Wildcats placed 19 shots on goal and took 30 overall playing on their home field. Michigan fell to Virginia, 2-1, in the second game of the afternoon at Lakeside Field. Virginia opened a 2-0 lead before Michigan responded with a goal at 58:27 off the stick of Kate McLaughlin. The Wolverines (15-5) finished with an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners, missing on its last corner opportunity in the game's closing seconds. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Deep in the heart of ACC country, Maryland sustained a 1-0 loss to Duke Friday afternoon. It was the second meeting this year between the schools with the Blue Devils winning by an identical score at the ACC/Big Ten Cup in September. The defensive battle produced just six combined shots on goal as Duke scored the lone goal in the third period. Maryland (13-7) pulled its goalkeeper with under five minutes to go but couldn't find the back of the cage with the extra attacker.

All games will be streamed on ESPN+.Northwestern (19-1), which won the Big Ten regular season title, is the No. 2 overall seed and will host the winner of an opening round match between Miami (Ohio) and Vermont on Friday, at 1 p.m. ET. Draft: 2024 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament

Photo by Greg FiumeCOLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Championship Game for the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament is set following semifinal action Friday at the Lacrosse and Field Hockey Complex. Michigan and Northwestern advanced and will meet on Sunday at 11 a.m. to play for the tournament title and an NCAA automatic berth. Top-seed Northwestern downed No. 4 seed Rutgers, 2-0, in the first semifinal. NU (19-0) received a goal from Ashley Sessa just 56 seconds into the game, then added an empty netter on from Maddie Zimmer at the 58:59 mark. Rutgers (8-9) managed two shots on goal while Scarlet Knight goalkeeper Sophia Howard turned away fives shots. In the second semifinal, No. 3 seed Michigan overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat No. 2 seed Maryland, 4-3, in a shootout. Michigan won the shootout, two strokes to zero. The first half produced three goals. Maryland's Maci Bradford scored on a rebound 14 minutes in. Michigan's Pilar Oliveros tied the game with 2:40 left in the first half before the Terp's Ella Gaitan answered less than a minute later. With their cage empty, Michigan forced overtime on Juliette Manzur's goal with four seconds left in regulation. Maryland's Hope Rose and Michigan's Lora Clarke also scored second-half goals.

Draft Field Hockey Tournament: Semifinals Recap

Photo by Art PittmanCOLLEGE PARK, Md. — The 2024 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament commenced Thursday on the University of Maryland campus with three quarterfinal matches. Rutgers, Maryland and Michigan advanced to the semifinals, which take place Friday. The opening game saw No. 4 seed Rutgers edge No. 5 seed Ohio State, 2-1, marking the second time this season the Scarlett Knights have defeated the Buckeyes. Kara Heck scored twice for Rutgers (8-8) while Makenna Webster netted her team-leading 16th goal for seventh-ranked Ohio State (14-5). A defensive battle ensued in the second game of the day, producing a scoreless tie at the end of regulation. No. 2 seed Maryland (13-5) advanced with a 1-0 shootout win over No. 7 seed Iowa (9-9), finishing with a 3-2 advantage in the shootout. Iowa goaltender Mia Magnotta made 17 saves, a total that matched the second-highest total in tournament history. In the nightcap, Esmee de Willigen's overtime goal on a deflection lifted No. 3 seed Michigan past No. 6 seed Indiana, 2-1. Michigan (13-5) received an early goal from Kate McLaughlin that held up until the fourth quarter. Indiana (9-9) pulled its goalkeeper with six minutes left and Sydney Keld capitalized with an extra-attacker goal with 1:14 left to force overtime.

This was also the first year an All-Freshman Team was chosen. Voting was conducted by conference head coaches.Maddie Zimmer of Northwestern was a unanimous selection as Player of the Year, Ashley Sessa of Northwestern was chosen Offensive Player of the Year and Josie Hollamon of Maryland tabbed Defensive Player of the Year. Northwestern’s Annabel Skubisz earned the Goalkeeper of the Year Award as a unanimous selection and Michigan State’s Carmen Pucheta received Freshman of the Year honors. Tracey Fuchs of Northwestern was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.Zimmer has not missed a beat since returning to the Wildcats after spending a year training with the U.S. National Team. The senior midfielder exceled at both ends of the field for a Northwestern squad that outscored opponents, 66-10, during the regular season. Averaging over a point per game (1.16), Zimmer is the first Wildcat to be named Player of the Year since 1994.Sessa is the overall leader in points (53) and a co-leader in goals (20) among her Big Ten peers — totals that rank first and second respectively in the NCAA. In Big Ten play, she produced a conference-best 10 goals and 24 points in eight games. The sophomore forward is in her first season at NU after transferring from North Carolina.A two-year starter, Hollamon has anchored a defense that hasn’t allowed more than two goals in a game this season. At the same time, the Terrapins rank fourth in NCAA goals-against (0.87), having registered six shutouts. Hollamon becomes the fourth Maryland player to win the Defensive Player of the Year award.Skubisz has produced an 18-0 record along with 11 shutouts for the No.1-ranked Wildcats. She leads the country in save percentage (.885) and ranks second in goals-against average (0.51). ROSEMONT, lll. – The field is set for the 2024 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament following the conclusion of conference play on Friday. Indiana, Michigan State and Northwestern Earn Field Hockey Honors

Photo courtesy of Northwestern Athletics ROSEMONT, Ill. – No. 1-ranked Northwestern captured the 2024 Big Ten Field Hockey Championship outright with a 5-0 victory over Michigan State on Sunday. The championship is the eighth in school history and the second-straight for the Wildcats, who clinched a share of the regular season title on Friday. The Wildcats have won 19-straight conference games dating to 2022. Northwestern (17-0, 7-0 Big Ten) earns the No. 1 seed for the Big Ten Tournament, slated for Nov. 7-10 at College Park, Md.

The championship is the eighth in program history and the second-straight for the Wildcats, who have won 18-straight conference games dating to 2022. The title is also the third for Head Coach Tracey Fuchs. Northwestern (16-0, 6-0 Big Ten) will attempt to win the regular season championship outright Sunday at Michigan State.
