Iowa, Ohio State and Penn State Bestowed Weekly Field Hockey Honors

<div class="payload-richtext">Big Ten Field Hockey continued an impressive start to the season behind nail-biting victories in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and a couple of non-conference blowouts in Iowa City. <h2>‘Cats and Terps sweep in Newton </h2>No. 1 Northwestern’s battle against No. 6 Duke on Friday was a sign of things to come over the weekend in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. After Ashley Sessa’s first goal of the year gave the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead, the Blue Devils responded with three first-half goals. Their lead lasted until the fourth quarter when Ilse Tromp took over. The reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year scored twice to send the game into overtime.  </a> – her first collegiate goal – six minutes into the extra frame to deliver the Wildcats a top-10 victory.  </a>. No. 13 Maryland also shut out Boston College 2-0 on Friday, setting up its own showdown with the Blue Devils on Sunday. Duke again started fast with two goals in the first quarter before Francisca Eschoyez scored to get the Terps on the board. The 2-1 deficit would last until the 59th minute, when freshman Ella Beach sent the game into overtime with the first goal of her career.  </a>. <h2>Buckeyes and Scarlet Knights pull off upsets </h2>Comebacks were the theme of the weekend, and it was no different for Ohio State and No. 20 Rutgers on Sunday afternoon. Both squads dropped their Friday matchups but rallied for upset victories on Sunday. The Buckeyes trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth quarter against No. 5 Virginia, then <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Dc9FwlLmjKv/?img_index=1" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">
 lightning struck twice
 </a> in the form of junior forward Siena Golden. With under 13 minutes to play, Golden redirected an almost head-high shot into the goal to tie it.  </a>.  The Big Ten finished the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with a 9-3 record over the opening two weekends of the season. <h2>Iowa dominates at home  </h2>Following two top-10 wins that vaulted the program to No. 4 in the country, Iowa continued to show why it’s a force to reckoned with over the weekend. The Hawkeyes beat Lehigh and Ball State by a combined score of 17-0 in their first two home games of the season. The one-two punch of Fréderique van Cleef and Dionne van Aalsum continued to shine. Van Cleef tallied two hat tricks and totaled six goals and two assists over the two games, while van Aalsum added five goals of her own, including a hat trick in Sunday’s win over Ball State. Six More Wins Against the ACC, Iowa Dominates

<div class="payload-richtext">After a mid-week break, the conference returns with a slate of ranked field hockey matchups this weekend in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. <h2>Unbeaten Powerhouses Collide: No. 1 Northwestern Meets No. 6 Duke </h2>Top-ranked Northwestern’s quest for a three-peat hits its first major hurdle against No. 6 Duke in Newton, Mass. Both programs enter the matchup with spotless defensive records, having held their opponents scoreless so far this season.  The two teams met last season in Durham, with the No. 1 Wildcats winning 1-0 thanks to Ilse Tromp’s penalty corner goal. Tromp again leads the Wildcats along with fellow seniors Ashley Sessa and Olivia Bent-Cole, who were also named <a href="https://bigten.org/fh/article/60254/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">

Iowa, Rutgers and Michigan Honored with Field Hockey Awards

<div class="payload-richtext">On an action-packed opening weekend of Big Ten Field Hockey, the conference’s top teams showed that they are ready to hit the ground running this season. <h2>Big Ten Makes a Statement in ACC Country </h2><h3>Michigan stuns North Carolina</h3>Shrugging off a two-hour weather delay on Friday to start the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, No. 14 Michigan <a href="https://mgoblue.com/news/2026/8/28/field-hockey-wolverines-down-no-2-north-carolina-in-overtime-to-open-2026" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">
 upset No. 2 North Carolina
 </a> in the Tar Heels’ home state with a 2-1 overtime win. The Wolverines broke the ice in the third quarter when Eva Bernardy scored on a penalty stroke, but North Carolina registered the tying tally just five minutes later. That set up redshirt freshman Sofia Ghanbari, in her collegiate debut, to bury the game-winning goal four minutes into overtime and give Michigan a massive first win of the season. In their second game on Sunday, the Wolverines fell to Wake Forest, 2-0. <h3>How ‘bout them Hawkeyes? </h3>No. 11 Iowa followed Michigan’s upset with an overtime victory of their own in Friday’s night cap, <a href="https://hawkeyesports.com/news/2026/08/29/no-11-hawkeyes-rally-to-defeat-no-7-wake-forest-in-overtime" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">
 defeating No. 7 Wake Forest
 </a> 4-3. The host Demon Deacons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, but the Hawkeyes’ big guns got them back into it.  </a> in Evanston. While Northwestern’s offense dominated — with 13 penalty corners, 20 shots and 11 shots on goal — it was Freedman again, who scored the lone tally in the 56th minute. <h2>Upset Bids Fall Short </h2>Penn State faced No. 5 Virginia on Friday afternoon and, like Iowa, stormed back from a 3-0 deficit with fourth quarter goals from Olivia Marthins, Ella Gaitan and Chloe Dhage. <div class="payload-richtext">The 2026 college field hockey season kicks off this weekend with all nine Big Ten teams in action, headlined by top-ranked Northwestern beginning its title defense at Lakeside Field.  Fresh off back-to-back national championships and three in the last five years, Tracey Fuchs’ Wildcats set the standard for a loaded conference featuring five preseason top-20 programs — No. 1 NU, No. 11 Iowa, No. 13 Maryland, No. 14 Michigan, and No. 17 Rutgers. Programs outside the rankings have a chance to prove they can contend with the nation's elite right out of the gate. Here’s what to watch in an action-packed opening weekend on the turf. <h2>Northwestern begins quest for three-peat </h2>After winning the last two national championships, Northwestern begins the 2026 field hockey season looking to become the first ever Big Ten program to win three straight national championships. Only three other programs have accomplished the feat: Old Dominion, North Carolina, and Wake Forest. While the Wildcats will have to replace two-time NFHCA National Player of the Year Maddie Zimmer, Fuchs returns a talent-rich core which includes senior forward Ashley Sessa, senior midfielder Ilse Tromp, and junior goalkeeper Juliana Boon, who went 19-1 as a starter in 2025. Northwestern opens its title defense at Lakeside Field with a pair of home clashes, hosting A-10 contender VCU on Friday afternoon before taking on Patriot League runner-up Lafayette on Sunday. With Sessa spearheading the attack, the Wildcats will look to break down a disciplined Leopards backline, while Boon (.775 SV% in 2025) anchors the defense in the cage. The Wildcats will look to assert dominance early as they look to make history this season. <h2>Michigan, Iowa prepare for ranked ACC/B1G challenge </h2>This weekend, both No. 14 Michigan and No. 11 Iowa head down to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the 24th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Big Ten pair will face top-10 ACC foes No. 2 North Carolina and No. 7 Wake Forest. Michigan, who opens Friday against the Tar Heels before taking on the Demon Deacons on Sunday, <a href="https://mgoblue.com/news/2026/8/26/field-hockey-wolverines-to-open-2026-campaign-at-acc-b1g-challenge" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">

<div class="payload-richtext">ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference on Thursday announced the dates and host sites for 2026-27 Olympic sports championships and tournaments. For the second consecutive year, all Big Ten Women’s Olympic Sports Championships & Tournaments will be presented by Allstate, the title sponsor of the Allstate Big Ten Women’s Championship Series. A complete schedule is below. The first postseason hardware of the fall will be handed out on October 30 in Madison, Wisconsin, at the 2026 Big Ten Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championships on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, which hosted the 2024 NCAA Championships and numerous NCAA Regionals. The following weekend, the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament will take place at Ohio State’s Buckeye Varsity Field from Nov. 4-8, and the quarter- and semifinals of the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament unfold at Energizer Park, home of Major League Soccer’s St. Louis CITY SC. The women’s tournament champion will be determined on Nov. 13 on the home field of the highest remaining seed, and the men’s soccer tournament title also will be handed out on Nov. 15 on the highest remaining seed’s campus. The winter championships begin in the pool with the Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships taking place Feb. 17-20 in Iowa City, and the Men’s Championships from Feb. 24-27 at Purdue’s Morgan J. Burke Aquatics Center. The 2027 Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships return to the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion Feb. 25-27. For the first time, the Big Ten Wrestling Championships will be hosted at a neutral site, Columbus’ Nationwide Arena, home of the NHL’s Blue Jackets. The conference that has produced 19 consecutive NCAA team champions will gather in Ohio’s capital city March 6-7. The Big Ten Ice Hockey tournament title will be determined on March 19 at the home of the highest remaining seed in the tournament, and the winter season will conclude with Women’s Gymnastics March 19-20 at Ohio State, and Men’s Gymnastics April 2-3 at Penn State. Spring action gets underway April 22-25 with the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament at Illinois’ Atkins Tennis Center. The Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships will be contested April 23-25 at Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania. From April 28-May 2, the Women’s Lacrosse Tournament heads west for the first time at USC’s Rawlinson Stadium. That same weekend Men’s Tennis will determine a tournament champion at Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, and the Men’s Golf Championships will take place at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. The Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament will be held May 6-8 at Penn State’s Panzer Stadium. Big Ten Softball will determine its tournament champion May 12-15 at Bowlin Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. Two-time defending national champion Northwestern tops the poll, having received all 11 first-place votes. Big Ten Tournament finalist Iowa ranks 11th followed by Maryland (13th), Michigan (14th) and Rutgers (17th). The collegiate field hockey season begins Friday. Big Ten Players to Represent Team USA at FIH Hockey World Cup

<div class="payload-richtext">ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its television schedule for the 2026 field hockey season. The Big Ten Network (BTN) will broadcast seven regular season games involving all nine participating schools. BTN will also cover the 2026 Big Ten Tournament with a semifinal doubleheader on November 6, followed by the championship game on November 8. The first broadcast is scheduled for Friday, September 18, when Michigan State plays host to Michigan. Field Hockey Fridays will be a theme on the linear schedule with five contests slated for that day of the week. In addition to the BTN lineup, Big Ten games and nonconference contests will be streamed on B1G+, BTN’s subscription streaming service, providing access to stream 2,700 more games and next-day on-demand archives.  </a>    ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that 1,962 students on varsity rosters have earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The list includes students from all 18 institutions, plus Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame and 41 sports who have recorded a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.    The 2025-26 class of Distinguished Scholar Award Recipients includes 359 students who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the previous academic year, represented in bold on the official list.    Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must have earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. <div class="payload-richtext">PORTLAND, Ore. - As the sun set over the rolling hills of Cooper Mountain Vineyards on Saturday evening, “Big Life Series: Pacific Northwest” concluded its immersive educational experience where student-athletes from all 18 Big Ten institutions learned firsthand about the rich culture and history of the Pacific Northwest.   Over the course of less than 48 hours, over 175 student-athletes and administrators engaged in programming that included visits to Multnomah Falls, the Oregon Historical Society, the Grande Ronde Reservation, and Cooper Mountain Vineyards. The event brought together participants from all 18 Big Ten institutions, creating opportunities for learning, dialogue, and relationship-building among student-athletes from across the conference.    “Big Life Series: Pacific Northwest was a remarkable experience that allowed attendees to better understand and interact with the history, culture, landscape, and people that give the Pacific Northwest its distinct identity,” said Big Ten Chief Operating Officer Kerry Kenny. “The unique opportunity to connect student-athletes from across the country to an immersive experience outside of their traditional element is what distinguishes the Big Ten in preparing these young men and women for life after campus.”    At the Oregon Historical Society on Saturday morning, student-athletes learned about how Oregon became the state it is today, including the often-untold Black, Native American, and Japanese history that has shaped the state. Participants also toured the Yasui Family exhibit, learning about the challenges Japanese Americans faced during World War II and the advocacy efforts that helped advance civil rights in the decades that followed.    The quote on the back of the Big Life Series: Pacific Northwest T-shirt: “What is done to the least of us can be done to all of us” was from Presidential Medal of Freedom winner Minori Yasui.    “I found his bravery in speaking out about these issues incredible,” said Indiana women’s track & field sprinter Kristina Vincic. “Having a voice isn’t an easy thing and it takes time to build one. That’s something we can definitely tie in to our teams.”     After learning about Native American history at the Oregon Historical Society, participants experienced its living impact firsthand at the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Veterans Powwow. Student-athletes learned about the traditional longhouse, witnessed cultural traditions, and took part in the Grand Entry ceremony.  Often competitors on the field, student-athletes joined together to dance with members of the Grande Ronde Confederation and in honoring Veterans. For many student-athletes, it is the moment they said they will remember most about the trip.    “It was beautiful seeing the tradition unfold right before my eyes and getting involved with it,” said Penn State football student-athlete Armstrong Nnodim. “As athletes we get caught up in the competitive world, so to come here and bond with everyone from different backgrounds was amazing.”   Launched in 2022, the Big Life Series is part of the Big Ten’s commitment to providing educational and developmental opportunities beyond competition. Big Life Series Showcases the Spirit of the Pacific Northwest

<div class="payload-richtext">ROSEMONT, Ill. - As part of the “Big Life Series: Pacific Northwest”, the Big Ten will host over 150 student-athletes, coaches and administrators from all 18 Big Ten schools in Portland, Ore. from Friday, July 10 to Sunday, July 12. The program is designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the region’s rich history, culture and communities through an immersive educational experience.   Programming will begin Friday evening with a nature walk through Multnomah Falls to showcase the region’s deep ties to nature and the history of the Pacific Northwest landscape.    On Saturday, student-athletes will visit the Oregon Historical Society and have the chance to learn about the Japanese American West Coast experience and hear firsthand from a member of the Oregon Black Pioneers. Through discussions centered on resilience, community, and historical impact, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the individuals and stories that have shaped the Pacific Northwest.    The group will then travel to the Grand Ronde Reservation for a Veterans Powwow, which will provide an opportunity to engage with living cultural traditions and better understand the history, values and contributions of the Native American communities across the region.   The evening will conclude with a dinner at Cooper Mountain Vineyard, where student-athletes will have a hands-on discussion about the agricultural history of the region and the grape-growing operation.   The Big Life series is an immersive educational experience started in 2022 that focuses on engaging, educating, and empowering Big Ten student-athletes, coaches, and administrators. With trips to Selma, Alabama; Mount Vernon, Iowa; and Portland, Oregon attendees learn about the historical and cultural significance of the region. Since its inception, over 500 students-athletes have participated in these programs. Big Life Series Heads to the Pacific Northwest

<div class="payload-richtext">EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey student-athlete Maddie Lawlor has been selected as the national female recipient of the 2026 Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award presented by Discover. She was announced as the winner Monday evening by Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti at the Spartan Academic Excellence Gala, joining Indiana’s Tyler Lillard as this year’s national honorees from a pool of 36 distinguished student-athletes representing all 18 conference institutions.“It is a great honor to present this award in Jackie Robinson’s name to these extraordinary Big Ten student-athletes,” said Petitti, “and to express our sincere appreciation for the ongoing support of the Jackie Robinson Foundation.”Lawlor was selected due to her multi-year involvement with Be The Match (now known as the National Marrow Donor Program) and her selfless journey to becoming a donor herself. During her time in East Lansing, Lawlor and the Michigan State field hockey program have led day-long bone marrow registration drives on campus each year. The events are all coordinated, promoted and worked by members of the MSU field hockey team.Through the National Bone Marrow Registry, Lawlor became a rare match for a patient in need in 2024. Without hesitation, she agreed to start the extensive and invasive process and ultimately donated her bone marrow to help save someone's life.A team captain, Lawlor finished among the Spartans leaders in goals and points - while starting all 36 games - over the last two seasons after missing the entire 2023 campaign due to injury. Off the field, the Shamong, New Jersey, native was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree during her career.Now in its second year, the Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award was established in 2025 to recognize student-athletes at Big Ten institutions who strive to have a positive impact not only in their chosen sport, but also within their community. Lillard was announced as the national male recipient last month before a practice in Bloomington by Petitti, Indiana President Pamela Whitten and Hoosiers Athletic Director Scott Dolson, surrounded by teammates and coaches.As a child, Tyler was diagnosed with epilepsy and, at the age of nine, doctors discovered a brain tumor on his optic nerve that would dramatically reduce his vision. Along with his mother, Tina, who surprised him during the award presentation, he created the Team Tyler Epilepsy Foundation to aid families with children in the hospital. He is active in mentoring young wrestlers, as well as with organizations such as Read Across America and Recess Buddies.Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball.
