Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern Receive Field Hockey Weekly Awards
Three goalkeepers recognized for outstanding performances
ROSEMONT, lll. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its weekly field hockey awards for games played October 13-19.
Offensive Player of the Week
Ashley Sessa, Northwestern
Jr. – F – Schwenksville, Pa. – Episcopal Academy
- Compiled nine points (4 goals, assist) over three games, helping No. 1 Northwestern to a pair of conference road wins
- Logged third collegiate hat trick and extended her points streak to eight games in NU’s 5-0 win over No. 15 Rutgers
- Leads the Big Ten with 14 assists while standing second in goals (11) and points (36)
- The NFHCA All-American earns her second Offensive Player Award of the season and the fifth of her career
Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Sadie Canelli, Indiana
So. – G – Boxford, Mass. – Pingree School
- Recorded a 1.51 goals-against average and .792 save percentage in three games
- Backstopped Indiana to its first-ever win over Maryland; kept the Terrapins off the scoreboard the last 79 minutes of the game, plus the shootout (four attempts by MD)
- Finished with 19 saves on the week, producing a career-high seven saves against Maryland and No. 18 Miami (OH)
- Awarded Defensive Player honor for the second time in her career
- Last Hoosier to receive the Defensive Player Award: Yip van Wonderen (Nov. 4, 2024)
Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Lyra Gavino, Michigan State
Jr. – G – New Malden, England – Surbiton
- Posted a 2-0-0 record and .789 save percentage for the week, helping Michigan State to its first conference win
- Made 10 saves to lead Michigan State to a 4-3 upset of No. 12 Ohio State on Sunday — performance ranked in the top 10 for saves this season by a Big Ten goalkeeper
- Thwarted 11-of-12 penalty corner attempts by the Buckeyes
- Held Ball State scoreless for 41 consecutive minutes in MSU’s 5-1 win on Tuesday
- Last Spartan to capture the Defensive Player Award: Lyra Gavino (Oct. 28, 2024)
Freshman of the Week
Juliana Boon, Northwestern
R-Fr. – G – Houston, Texas – St. John’s School
- Guided top-ranked Northwestern to wins against No. 10 Maryland and No. 15 Rutgers
- Allowed four goals total in three games versus Top-15 opponents, stopping 13-of-17 shots on goal for a .765 save percentage
- Recorded ninth shutout of the season with four saves against the Scarlet Knights
- Leads the NCAA in goals-against average (0.50) and save percentage (.873)
- Has captured four conference weekly awards this year (2-Freshman, 2-Defensive)
