Four ranked field hockey matchups in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge this weekend
After a mid-week break, the conference returns with a slate of ranked field hockey matchups this weekend in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Unbeaten Powerhouses Collide: No. 1 Northwestern Meets No. 6 Duke
Top-ranked Northwestern’s quest for a three-peat hits its first major hurdle against No. 6 Duke in Newton, Mass. Both programs enter the matchup with spotless defensive records, having held their opponents scoreless so far this season.
The two teams met last season in Durham, with the No. 1 Wildcats winning 1-0 thanks to Ilse Tromp’s penalty corner goal. Tromp again leads the Wildcats along with fellow seniors Ashley Sessa and Olivia Bent-Cole, who were also named preseason players to watch in the conference.
As Northwestern embarks on a demanding road weekend against Duke and Boston College, the backline's poise and a strong performance from goalkeeper Juliana Boon will determine if the Wildcats can keep their spotless record intact.
Across the conference, there are more marquee matchups to watch:
- No. 13 Maryland will also take on the Blue Devils, two days after facing off against hosts Boston College on Friday. Junior Francisca Eschoyez and freshman Aida Ierubino lead the Terrapins attack, each with two goals in two games.
- Rutgers welcomes both No. 5 Virginia and No. 12 Syracuse to Piscataway looking for its first marquee win of the season. Senior forward Olivia Fraticelli will look to spearhead the Scarlet Knight attack after scoring a hat trick against Wagner.
- After securing its first win of the season in Columbus, Ohio State will join Rutgers in New Jersey and also battle against the Orange and Cavaliers. The Buckeyes will be looking for revenge after losing one-goal games to both teams in last year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
- Michigan State carries an unblemished record into a challenging weekend slate, facing two ranked opponents in No. 16 Miami (Ohio) and No. 15 Louisville.
