Evanston hosts the country's top two programs for marquee doubleheaders, while Rutgers and Penn State gear up for signature non-conference tests
Field hockey season is hitting full speed, and the Big Ten remains the center of gravity in the college landscape. Boasting five ranked programs — including No. 1 Northwestern and No. 2 Iowa headlining four in the top 10 — the conference continues to set the pace across the country.
That elite standard takes center stage this weekend as Big Ten powerhouses square off in a heavy-hitting gauntlet of national showdowns.
Top-ranked Northwestern, No. 2 Iowa face contenders in Midwest Challenge
After defeating No. 6 Duke and Boston College in Newton, Mass., defending champion Northwestern faces two more big tests in Evanston on Friday and Sunday against No. 14 Louisville and No. 16 Miami University, respectively. Northwestern's attack continues to run through two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Ashley Sessa, who has two goals in the early campaign to pace the Wildcats' lethal frontline along with leading-scorer Ilse Tromp (three goals). Paired with dynamic playmaking from Olivia Bent-Cole, Northwestern steps into the weekend eager to assert its dominance against dangerous contenders on the Lakeside.
Right behind its conference rival at No. 2 in the country, Iowa carries heavy national expectations into a demanding weekend stretch in Evanston. The Hawkeyes’ high-octane attack has been relentless out of the gate, driven by the nation’s goals and points leader Fréderique van Cleef (eight goals and 19 points) and midfielder Dionne van Aalsum, who is tied for second in the country with seven goals following a dominant hat-trick performance on Sunday. Taking the pitch at Northwestern's home venue, the Hawkeyes will look to showcase that explosive execution — with a Division I-leading 24 goals — alongside their defensive grit as they square off against both the RedHawks and Cardinals.

No. 17 Rutgers faces two top-10 opponents
Fresh off a shootout victory over No. 12 Syracuse to push their record to 2-2, Rutgers heads into one of the most demanding weekends on their non-conference schedule. The Scarlet Knights travel within New Jersey for a top-10 battle, locking horns with No. 4 Princeton (on ESPN+ Friday) before squaring off against No. 10 UConn (Sunday on B1G+) in a pair of marquee showdowns.
Rutgers’ offense is firing behind senior forward Olivia Fraticelli, who has earned Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors already this season after pouring in five goals across her first four games — including a clinical hat trick against Wagner. Anchored in net by goalkeeper Emily Nicholls, Rutgers will look to stop the Tigers and Huskies.
Penn State targets upset in University Park
Penn State has been red-hot as of late, winning three straight games over Lock Haven, Villanova and Delaware while outscoring opponents 12-1. But this weekend gives the team its biggest challenge of the season with No. 4 Princeton coming to town after it faces Rutgers on Friday. The Nittany Lions will lean on junior goalkeeper Aby Deverka, who was named Big Ten and NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week after making 13 saves and allowing just one goal in last weekend’s victories. In front of their home crowd on Sunday, the Nittany Lions will look to build energy as they battle the Tigers on B1G+.
